Tottenham Hotspur v Juventus

The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • A superb game that changed direction several times where the Referee benefited from goals being scored at moments in the game where the tempo and mood of the players was intensifying
  • A key match incident wrongly called as Juventus should have had a first half penalty where the active Assistant Referee does offer support despite being well placed
  • Referee Szymon Marciniak will have learned much about his game tonight where his credentials to officiate at this level were thoroughly examined

Every Referee needs a little luck and that is certainly true of tonight’s action. I sensed at two points in this match that the mood of the players was darkening and the Referee was not delivering the presence and leadership that was needed, but firstly the home team scored and the players intentions changed and again with the away teams two goals in as many minutes the mood changed and the pressure on the Referee eased. In my view this clearly benefitted the Referee as his management of the players and timing and choice of some cautions was not achieving the desired effect. It is hard not to draw comparisons with the Refereeing of the first leg as Felix Brych is arguably the best Referee in the world at the moment and to some extent that is unfair on Szymon Marciniak, however he would have learned much about his game at European Club Level and if he reflects on his performance tonight and views this as an opportunity to build, can develop areas of his game that will enable him to challenge those at the pinnacle of Refereeing.

Full TimeSummary to follow

RH at 2018-03-07 22:34:47

A minimum of three minutes additional time to be played

RH at 2018-03-07 22:34:25

Harry Kane goes close but surely he was offside as the ball was crossed in?

RH at 2018-03-07 22:32:30

Yellow CardDembele halts the attacking progress of Dybala and understandably receives a caution

RH at 2018-03-07 22:31:11

The Referee has words with Juve keeper Buffon following his berating of Assistant  Pawel Sokolnicki for not flagging Harry Kane offside which was ok by me given that the Spurs player was clearly making no attempt to get involved with the passage of play.

RH at 2018-03-07 22:24:37

From a Technical perspective Referee Szymon Marciniak does read the pattern of play well, he works the channels to good effect and always seeks to anticipate the direction of the play and get into position for final third viewing

RH at 2018-03-07 22:21:39

The match tempo has changed, those two goals in as many minutes has punctured the atmostphere in the stadium, this in turn has descended like mist to the players, for the right reasons the Referee is able to adopt a lower profile at present

RH at 2018-03-07 22:18:41

Costa bites at Eriksen’s legs but the Referee plays a good midfield advantage

RH at 2018-03-07 22:16:36

The second half goals have given the Juve layers a more positive outlook on the game with less focus on that perceived first half injustice, which can only makes life that bit easier for the Referee during this phase of the match

RH at 2018-03-07 22:13:31

From a Refereeing dynamic the shape of the game will change, Juventus will most likely drop men back behind the ball attacking on the counter attack!

RH at 2018-03-07 22:10:33

GOAL!Dybala turns the contest on its head!

RH at 2018-03-07 22:09:00

GOAL!A superb finish from Higuain levels it 1-1

Three yellow cards since half time, the Referee to his credit is remaining calm but there is a potential problem looming here given that from a Refereeing perspective what we need in this phase of the game is Presence and game management from the Referee not a precession of yellow cards some of which have lacked substance and impact

RH at 2018-03-07 22:03:31

The crowd are appealing for a second yellow for Pjanic for that challenge on Eriksen, not for me as it was no more than careless

RH at 2018-03-07 22:01:33

Yellow CardAlli and Khedira got high for the ball and the Juve player comes off worse and Alli earns a caution!

RH at 2018-03-07 22:00:12

Assistant Tomasz Listkiewicz with a tight but correct offside against Higuain

RH at 2018-03-07 21:58:51

Yellow CardThe most cynical of challenges by Chiellini on Alli sees the most obvious of cautions tonight! Alli is certainly getting the treatment at the moment and needs protecting by the Referee!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:54:58

Yellow CardBenatia is the latest to try his luck and makes a reckless challenge and he gets the overdue yellow card, which came one challenge too late

RH at 2018-03-07 21:53:11

Matuidi late on Davies, following that Costa challenge what a perfect time to put your stamp on it with a yellow card?

RH at 2018-03-07 21:50:03

Costa goes in late on Alli and Spurs earn a free kick in a dangerous position!

A testing first half where I sense that Referee Szymon Marciniak is more reactionary in his reading of the game and not offering the same degree of presence and pro-active control that we saw in the first leg. The Referee got off to a decent start wisely refraining from awarding a spot kick for two ball to arm contact situations, however on 17 minutes Vertonghen was caught out by Costa’s pace and he floored the Juve player for what should have been a nailed on penalty. Its also worth remembering that the active Assistant and Additional Assistant Referee had a good view of that challenge.  TV pictures also showed illegal boot contact by Barzagli on a grounded Son after the Spurs man was felled. We cannot see where the Referee was in relation to the incident which if seen should resulted in a Red Card! Its going to be a challenging second half for the Referee!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:33:27

Half Time

RH at 2018-03-07 21:31:47

A minimum of two minutes additional time to be played

RH at 2018-03-07 21:31:17

Yellow CardPjanic earns the latest caution for an agricultural swing of the leg at the ball and Alli

RH at 2018-03-07 21:29:17

That goal will have changed the dynamic of the game, which is a fortunate break for the Referee because things were starting to get uncomfortable!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:26:36

GOAL!Son makes the Italian job that much harder now for the visitors!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:25:39

This is an important phase of the game, the match tempo is rising and some players are testing the Referee, he needs to pick out the right sanctions to maintain control!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:23:39

Great spot by the Referee as Dembele does a crafty hand ball!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:22:26

Yellow CardTrippier makes a meal of challenge by Sandro and the Juve man is hard done by to receive a caution!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:21:08

TV pictures showing some spiteful contact between Barzagli and Son where the Italian leaves his boot in as the players separate  after the Juve’s players careless challenge, if the Referee had had a good view of that he would have received a sanction for sure!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:14:28

Yellow CardA reckless challenge by Vertonghaen on Dybala results in an obvious caution!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:12:18

With both teams counter attacking like this there are crucial defending challenges made in the attacking channel, the Referee has got to create a decent viewing angle in these situations, if not we could be in for another key match incident error

RH at 2018-03-07 21:08:58

I would expect a Referee at this level to move on from that penalty incident, he knew that the Juventus players weren’t happy but you have to park the decision and focus on getting the next ten minutes right!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:06:39

To be fair to the Referee he had two colleagues there and the Assistant Referee on the touchline had a decent view of that Vertonghen challenge, it should not have been missed!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:04:31

Vertonghen gets caught by an injection of pace and brings down Costa! should have been a Juventus penalty!

RH at 2018-03-07 21:01:39

Chiellini committed himself in the tackle and made contact  with the ball drawing a penalty appeal from Harry Kane, again in my view that would have been a very harsh penalty award, correct call!

RH at 2018-03-07 20:58:26

With Juve playing three men at the back they are looking to get forward quickly in the counter attack, Referee Szymon Marciniak may well be tested physically if the game stays this open!

RH at 2018-03-07 20:56:07

Good to see the Referee move into the penalty area to get a good view of that Alli Benatia contest!

RH at 2018-03-07 20:53:46

Already this is an open game with both sides pushing men forward!

RH at 2018-03-07 20:49:36

Already we have an early penalty area decision for the Referee as the ball takes a deflection off Benatia’s arm, would have been harsh in my view!

RH at 2018-03-07 20:47:41

If you are watching the game on TV, Pawel Sokolnicki is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Tomasz Listkiewicz is running the nearside touch line.

The meeting of these two teams on 13th February was one of the best games involving an English club side that we’ve seen all season! Spurs going two down early and showing tremendous character and determination to earn a credible draw on the night. But that wasn’t the only memory from that game because here on Refcam we also witnessed arguably the best Refereeing Performance of the season so for from German Referee Felix Brych. Brych’s management of the first leg match drew wide spread acclaim including You Are The Ref’s Keith Hackett who stated that the PGMO should benchmark the performance for domestic Premier League Refereeing purposes. What a fantastic game we have to look forward to tonight!
