#SEAvLAFC VAR controversy strikes again.  A sound and solid refereeing performance will be remembered only for the non-intervention by VAR in the 73rd minute, when there was a clear case for doing so. There was a clear and obvious error by referee Jose Carlos Rivero as he failed to award a penalty kick to LAFC when their attacker Vela was recklessly challenged in the penalty area by Bwana of Seattle Sounders.  Replays show that the offence was clearly committed inside the penalty area, therefore ticking every box as for as VAR protocol is concerned.

Full Time Full time – summary to follow ….

AH at 2018-03-05 01:17:05

Yellow CardNouhou is cautioned late in the game, correct judgement by the referee despite the play acting from Seattle

AH at 2018-03-05 01:12:20

We have 3 minutes of additional time ….

AH at 2018-03-05 01:08:56

Yellow CardRed Card#SEAvLAFC I had a hunch that this might get ‘interesting’, a 2nd yellow card for Alfaro for a reckless lunge and he correctly see red – his challenge left the referee with no option.

AH at 2018-03-05 01:06:14

Yellow CardAlfaro is justifiably cautioned – the 2nd yellow card of the afternoon

AH at 2018-03-05 01:04:07

#SEAvLAFC Well we have the first talking point of the evening as Seattle’s Bwana challenges LAFC #10 Vela illegally, in my opinion. VAR can only review if the ‘offence’ was in the penalty area, and this was just the case. Why VAR has not been used in this situation is a mystery to me, this was a ‘clear and obvious’ error which must be reviewed.  Massive shame as the referee has done well so far.

AH at 2018-03-05 00:56:06

Yellow Card#SEAvLAFC As expected, the game’s first reckless challenge by Feilhaber brings the game’s first caution.  That was the ideal opportunity for the referee to assert his authority with 20 minutes remaining and he did not disappoint.  It’s been a good passage of play for the refereeing team.

AH at 2018-03-05 00:49:46

#SEAvLAFC Great officiating all round.  A good advantage by the referee leads to a headed ‘goal’ for the Sounders, only for this to be ruled out by an accurate offside decision by Assistant Referee Brian Poeschel.  Great stuff from the refereeing team.

AH at 2018-03-05 00:43:31

Full credit to the players so far (and I hope I have not spoken too soon), there have not been any tackles of a reckless or cynical nature, hence no need for the referee to produce a yellow card.  Not sure this will continue, giving the closeness of the game…..

AH at 2018-03-05 00:37:52

#SEAvLAFC We welcome your comments on any refereeing talking points, tweet us @youaretheref, it will be great to hear from you.

AH at 2018-03-05 00:34:14

I am not convinced that the referee is moving as fluidly as he did in the first 45, need to keep an eye on this as the 2nd half unfolds …

AH at 2018-03-05 00:26:57

Here we go for the second 45 ….

Many, many ‘column inches’ have been given up to VAR over recent weeks, our views on this for your half-time reading, please visit

Half Time So far, so good for the referee. If I am to be hyper critical here, I am not sure why the referee appears to whistle for everything, including goal-kick restarts – and his whistle tone does not vary.  One skill is make the whistle ‘talk’, unfortunately the talk is somewhat mono-syllabic. Apart from this, all ok so far.

AH at 2018-03-05 00:04:24

This is certainly a fast-paced and high tempo match, no Premier League ‘parking the bus’ type tactics being deployed here as the Home Team search for an equaliser before half-time.

AH at 2018-03-05 00:00:51

Once again the referee shows a good turn of pace and dynamic movement as the Home Team move quickly forward, which also included a quick change of direction to ensure that play remained within his view

AH at 2018-03-04 23:55:14

#SEAvLAFC This is a key phase of the game for the referee, the foul count and the tempo of the game are both rising, time for the referee to increase his profile and remain strong for the final 15 minutes of this half.

AH at 2018-03-04 23:50:28

Just 5 penal offences in the first quarter of the game, the players have shown good discipline so far, good news for referee Jose Rivero and his team.

AH at 2018-03-04 23:45:09

#SEAvLAFC Nothing wrong at all so far with the referees decision making, but I just have a concern that his patrol-path is somewhat narrow.  This has not caused him an issue so far, lets see what unfolds …

AH at 2018-03-04 23:41:02

#SEAvLAFC One of my pet-hates about the laws is the restart when the ball does not leave the penalty area at a goal-kick.  This should be an indirect free-kick to the attacking team for me – but what do you think – let us know by tweeting us here @youaretheref

AH at 2018-03-04 23:37:59

GOAL!What a great start for LAFC as Rossi (there is a famous football name) fires home to open the scoring – we have a game on our hands …

AH at 2018-03-04 23:34:21

#SEAvLAFC My first impression of the referee Jose Carlos Rivero is that he may be a little extravagant in his actions and his dealings with the players, highlighted by his movement towards the incident in the 5th minute.  We will see what transpires …

AH at 2018-03-04 23:29:21

Given the recent controversy regarding VAR, it will be interesting to see if Mr Ford has a quiet afternoon!

AH at 2018-03-04 23:27:52

The match officials for this game are:

Referee: Jose Carlos Rivero

Assistant Referees: Brian Poeschel, Mike Kampmeinert

4th Official: Alex Chilowicz

VAR: Timothy Ford

AH at 2018-03-04 23:26:47

And the LAFC #7 almost opens the scoring in the first minute by rattling the upright with a brave header

AH at 2018-03-04 23:24:39

#SEAvLAFC The fantastically named Latif Blessing wears #7 for LAFC, surely this is not a ‘blessing in disguise’ ….

AH at 2018-03-04 23:22:27

Some well-known names to UK soccer fans appearing in this game, no more so than LAFC  manager Bob Bradley, who had a somewhat unsuccessful spell in charge of Swansea City in the Premier League.

AH at 2018-03-04 23:21:09

Thanks to Guy Beale for his coverage of Manchester City v Arsenal earlier today, where Michael Oliver gave an excellent display, described by Guy as “one of the best performances I have seen all season”

AH at 2018-03-04 23:15:58

#SEAvLAFC Talking of firsts, this is Los Angeles FC first ever game in the MLS and here @youaretheref we wish the club well in their new venture.  On the flip-side of this, Seattle Sounders have a well-established relationship with us here at You Are The Ref as they been fantastic supporters and have travelled to the UK to successfully compete in our Youdan Trophy tournament.

AH at 2018-03-04 23:13:30

#SEAvLAFC  Good evening if you are watching in the UK, good afternoon if you are watching stateside, and welcome to our first MLS coverage of the season here on RefCam.
