Bournemouth v Tottenham Hotspur

RH at 2018-03-11 19:18:08

The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Mike Dean delivers a solid display which reflects his experience and reliability at this level
  • Spurs third goal results from a current over tolerance of players who delay the restart of play at free kicks in Premier League games, the PGMOL need to take action on this
  • A reminder of the importance for Assistants being level with play

Mike Dean looked solid and self assured this afternoon, he always had this match in the palm of his hand and apart from a couple of moments his decision making was of a high order. The only observations I would make is that Gosling was unlucky to be cautioned, but that could have influenced with Danny Rose’s pace, however the other point I make relates to Spurs third goal where Son Clearly restricted Bournemouth’s attacking options as I blogged at the time, Mike Dean is by no means alone in this, the PGMOL must remind Referees to apply Law here as it disadvantages the offended team. Play broke down and the visitors scored the all important third goal. But the Referee did really well in not awarding a penalty when Son went to ground under minimal contact from Daniels and also spotting Wilson subtle push in Sanchez back before ‘scoring’, it was in most respects vintage Mike Dean. My final talking point relates to Assistant Mark Scholes performance. I don’t know what notice Mark had of this appointment as he replaced Ian Hussin. But what ever preparation time he had cannot excuse his work rate today,  from the opening Cherries counter attack he was too far behind play, to make matters worse he was behind play when Son, technically offside, received the ball before scoring, I won’t criticise  Mark for  not spotting that the Spurs players foot was offside, but his being a couple of metres behind play gave him no credibility, these were not isolated incidents. If you are an Assistant Referee at this level TV can cruelly expose you in these situations.

Summary to follow

RH at 2018-03-11 18:53:07

Smith catches Trippier with an outstretched arm, sure that had nothing to do with Trippiers earlier challenge did it?

RH at 2018-03-11 18:51:01

We’re well into the five minutes minimum additional time here

RH at 2018-03-11 18:49:18

GOAL!Begovic punished as Spurs hit a fourth!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:48:13

An interesting talking point resulting from that third goal is a current pet hate of mine, Son stopped Bournemouth from playing that free kick into the penalty area by standing on he ball, therefore they had to settle for second best, the ball was given away and Spurs scored, Son should have been cautioned there!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:46:11

GOAL!Has Son put it beyond doubt now?

RH at 2018-03-11 18:44:38

Another good call as Wanyama fouls Gosling

RH at 2018-03-11 18:43:11

Great spot from Mike Dean as he identifies  a Wilson push on Sanchez before ‘scoring’ superb decision!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:41:34

Trippier sends Smith skyward for a Cherries free kick

RH at 2018-03-11 18:38:27

Alli loses his cool with Smith and nearly lands one on the Assistant! nothing comes of it though

RH at 2018-03-11 18:36:45

The Referee has done well so far, important then that he keeps focus and brings this game home so that the headlines are all taken by the players which is what we all want!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:31:57

Wanyama uses too much weight in the penalty area and concedes a free kick

RH at 2018-03-11 18:30:44

TV have shown a reply of Son’s goal and although I wouldn’t criticise Mark Scholes for not seeing that Son’s foot was technically making him offside, what looks bad is that Assistant Mark Scholes is again not level with play again and he should have been there, his work rate is not good enough in this game so far!

Mark Scholes the busier Assistant at the moment as Spurs are pressing for another goal!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:21:35

Gosling can feel a little aggrieved with that earlier caution, as I said Rose was in full flight and that must have influenced the Referees decision

RH at 2018-03-11 18:20:09

GOAL!Son mishits the ball but no matter, Spurs have the lead!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:19:04

Yellow CardGosling earns the home sides first caution for a late challenge which was as much a product of Rose’s pace that anything else!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:14:07

Looking at a TV replay of that Daniels Son challenge, yes there was contact but it was minimal and would have been the softest of penalties, I agree with the Referee!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:11:58

Son is grounded in the penalty area but Mike Dean not impressed!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:07:53

Ake receives a head injury in the goal area but the Referee is alert to ensure that when he came on it was at the half way line

RH at 2018-03-11 18:04:41

Bournemouth starting the second half high tempo as they did so the first!

RH at 2018-03-11 18:02:42

Mike Dean starts the second half!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:53:52

Mike Dean looking confident and in complete control in the opening half, just the one caution for a reckless tackle and a couple of foul throw awards to add to the eight free kicks awarded. He’ll be delighted if the second half goes as well!  Just one point of concern was Assistant Mark Scholes being caught for pace as Bournemouth counter attacked Spurs in the 4th minute, Mark clearly wasn’t focussed and gave too much ground, fortunately nothing came of it as Stanislas missed. Other than that the players have made all the headlines so far!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:45:24

A minimum of two minutes additional time to be played

RH at 2018-03-11 17:43:56

A good advantage  played by Mike Dean in that last Spurs attack following a push on Dembele

Another foul throw this time by Aurier, just like buses eh, you don’t see one for ages then two come along!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:37:02

This is a game that you feel has more goals in it!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:35:41

GOAL!Alli levels for Spurs!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:33:23

Worryingly for Spurs and England for that matter, Harry Kane has ben replaced through injury

RH at 2018-03-11 17:29:23

Harry Kane nets, but Simon Beck is spot on with his offside flag!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:28:28

Bournemouth not afraid not get men behind the ball so Mike Dean taking care not to get caught up in play!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:23:23

After a high tempo opening ten minutes the game has settled down a bit but the overall pace of the game is progressive as Bournemouth will view this as a legitimate game plan to unsettle Spurs who would rather slow things down!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:22:17

Mike Dean having words with Fourth Official Graham Scott regarding a delay in the ball being made available for a throw in

RH at 2018-03-11 17:18:19

Yellow CardDanny Rose receives a caution for a Reckless challenge on Calum Wilson

RH at 2018-03-11 17:17:27

A TV replay of that first Bournemouth counter attack has just confirmed how far Mark Scholes was behind play, fortunately nothing came of it but that’s a sure wake up call for the Assistant!

Simon Francis makes a rare foul throw error, you don’t see that often a this level!

A frenetic start to this match where the home side are playing a high tempo game!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:07:13

GOAL!Stanislas makes no mistake this time!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:05:39

A lung busting Bournemouth counter attack leaving Referee Mike Dean and Assistant Mark Scholes making up ground to get into position!

RH at 2018-03-11 17:01:22

If you are watching the game on TV, Mark Scholes is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Simon Beck is running the nearside touch line.

Spurs will be looking to improve as they visit the scene of their 0-0 draw with points needed to secure a Champions League spot, hoping old favourite Jermaine Defoe does not come off the bench to haunt them.

Referee Craig Pawson cautioned Dan Gosling, Max Gradel, Erik Lamela, Jan Vertonghen, Dele Alli and Danny Rose that day.

This is only the seventh game between these sides ever, the first having ended 3-1 to AFCB in February, 1957… their only win in this fixture, while Spurs’ win in this season’s reverse fixture was their first in the Premier League at at Wembley. It ended 1-0 thanks to Christian Eriksen’s winner, with Bobby Madley in the middle.

Fresh from Coventry versus Lincoln, Mike Dean was also in charge of Bournemouth’s late defeat to Manchester City at the Vitality Stadium and the 0-0 draw between Spurs and Swansea at Wembley in September.

He also took the Swans’ 1-0 loss to Brighton in November, plus their 2-0 defeat at Chelsea and the small matter of the north London derby which Spurs lost 2-0 to Arsenal in November. He happened to be in charge when West Ham knocked Spurs out of the Carabao Cup 3-2 in October, too.

All you need to know about Mike Dean:
