You-Are-The-Ref are delighted to announce their latest signing to the team with Jake Collin joining their ever-growing list of Referee Coaches, specialising in training and educating Assistant Referees.
Collin’s arrival comes just four months after the world’s best referee Mark Clattenburg was appointed as YATR Academy International Director and it is no surprise that the former Premier League Assistant Referee, like Clattenburg, was equally keen to join the world’s leading referee education platform.
The FIFA listed match official, with 240 Premier League games under his belt, left at the start of this season and will now take up his new role with You-Are-The-Ref, a challenge the Liverpudlian is excited about: “Joining the You-Are-The-Ref team is something that excites me greatly, the potential of the brand and the Academy is huge and it’s a privilege to now be part of that.
“I’ve worked with Mark for a number of years and we have both discussed the brilliant work YATR does. Once Mark joined earlier this year it was inevitable that I would follow him and now that I’m here, I’m eager to get started and continue the first-class work already being delivered.”
Jake initially started out as a footballer plying his trade at both Everton and Liverpool in his teens before deciding that refereeing would be his chosen career path. Supported by his father Jimmy Collin, the 44 year old started officiating in grassroots football before progressing, ten years later, to the professional game where he quickly found himself running the line regularly in Championship fixtures.
In 2008 he made the further step up to the Premier League and two years later was appointed to the FIFA assistant’s panel, refereeing games in the Champions League and Europa League. But by Jake’s own admission, his greatest achievement was being selected as an assistant referee for the Euro 2016 final in France with Clattenburg, a feat he beams proudly when speaking about: “That was a special day for me, the highlight of my career in fact. It made the years spent trying to be the best referee I can be all worthwhile.
“But it took years of hard work to get there. In all honesty, there was a real lack of support for referees during my development, I always felt on my own and it was a hard climb up the ladder.
“That said, with the years of experience I have under my belt, I am eager to impart my know-how to Academy members, by speaking to them, engaging with them and eventually developing them to the best of their ability.”
Jake’s arrival at You Are The Ref will provide members of the Academy even more support and advice on making the grade as a professional match official. With Jake’s fifteen years of experience and having only just recently left the very top, who better to help you in your goal of maximising your potential as a match official.
