HACKETT’S VERDICT: Tartan trouncing for England’s referees

HACKETT’S VERDICT: Tartan trouncing for England’s referees

Scoreline: Scotland 2 England 1.

A poor state of affairs for England and something needs to be done.

But no, I'm not talking about the result of a football match. It's the simple fact that Scotland are beating England in the field of international refereeing.

The Scottish Football Association have two UEFA Elite Referees in Willie Collum and Craig Thomson. Sadly England, with its group of professional referees, only has one.

He is Martin Atkinson, aged 46, who was rightly awarded an extension on his International career.

I make no apologies for returning to the subject of the poor business strategy that is currently in place.

Let's hope that when we move towards the end of this year we have a positive announcement from the head of UEFA's referees that Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor have produced a series of top class performances in Europe and that both get the nod.

Michael Oliver

The strategy must be to aim towards securing a third official from the PGMOL and then a solid 3/5 year plan to get a squad of 10 FIFA referees.

The fact that only one younger referee, Chris Kavanagh, has been promoted to the SG1 group for this coming season is simply not good enough.

The PGMOL management are squarely responsible for the current position.
