Seattle Sounders and Charlon Athletic were crowned champions of the 2016 Youdan Trophy following a thrilling end to the tournament on Friday 5th August 2016.
An action-packed Finals Day saw all competing teams battle it out for final placings, but most eyes were locked on the two showpiece events taking place at Sheffield Hallam University.
The first of the games saw Charlton face host city Sheffield Wednesday in the under-14 contest, with the Addicks looking to go one better than last year, when they lost 3-2 to Rangers in the final.
That was not to be the case this time around, as the Londoners raced into a three-goal lead in the first half, a lead which would not be relinquished.
Euan Williams bagged a brace for Charlton, with Nathaniel Beckles rounding off the victory.
Everton’s Lewis Dobbin picked up the under-14 Golden Boot, racking up 10 goals in five games for the Toffees.
At 3pm came the final with an international feel, USA’s Seattle Sounders taking on FC Basel of Switzerland in the under-16 competition.
Azriel Gonzalez gave the Sounders a first-half advantage, his sixth goal of the tournament, which proved to be enough to earn Seattle the title. That Gonzalez goal secured him the golden boot, while team-mate Daniel Robles was named Player of the Tournament.
The victory was somewhat fitting, with the Youdan Trophy set to make its international bow in 2017, when the tournament will be held in New York.
You Are The Ref director Jock Waugh said: “Seattle Sounders’ dominance of the tournament was quite fitting – the Youdan Trophy is launched in New York in 2017.
“We really couldn’t have wished for a better week and the feedback from visiting clubs has been fantastic.
“It has been hugely satisfying to see some of the biggest names in the game coming to our city to celebrate one of the oldest stories in football.”
