Football should encourage referees to develop character and presence, says top rugby Super League referee Robert Hicks.
In the second part of a filmed interview with You Are The Ref, Hicks expresses the view that character is being squeezed out of football officiating.
“The best referees are the ones with that presence – like Mark Clattenburg and Martin Atkinson,” says Hicks, a supporter of Manchester United.
He believes football should be stronger on discipline but less rigid when it comes to giving referees more power over law interpretation and man-management.
Tune in below to the second part of Hicks’ interview with Alan Biggs.
