You-Are-The-Ref.com’s ranks are set for a major boost with the signing of Paul Rejer – the man who shaped professional Assistant Referees in the English Premier League and who then moved on to develop PRO (Professional Referees Organisation), the group of MLS elite referees
His return to the UK will see him take up the role of You Are The Ref’s Head of Referee Education from March 2018, where he will oversee the YATR Academy and look to take the international platform to the next level.
Growing up in Tividale in the Black Country, he became a referee in 1978 before becoming a Football League assistant referee in 1986. Four years later he progressed to the Premier League list of assistants in its inaugural season. He was also on the very first FIFA Linesman list whilst in 1994 he stepped up to the Referees List for the Football League.
Paul enjoyed plenty of big occasions including running the line in both the 1994 FA Cup final and 1992 UEFA Cup final whilst officiating numerous times in World Cup qualifiers and the Champions League.
Upon retirement in 2003 he became an assessor on the Football League. A year later he was appointed as Select Group Assistant Referee coach in the Premier League before stepping up three years later to become manager.
After nine years working with PGMOL, Rejer moved to New York in 2012 to become Training and Development Manager with PRO, where he has since become a key figure in the development of match officials across the pond.
Speaking about his new role, he said: “I’m delighted to have joined You-Are-The-Ref and look forward to getting stuck into this next challenge of my career.
“The last six years in the USA have been incredible and the decision to leave PRO was not taken lightly, but the opportunity to join this ever-growing organisation and return home was something I couldn’t turn down.
“The education of referees is something that I have lived and breathed over the past fifteen years and this role will allow me to continue doing that across the world.”
Paul joins an ever-growing stellar line up of former match officials at YATR including Mark Clattenburg, Sonia Denoncourt, Mark Halsey, Andy Hogg, Dean Mohareb, Roger Dilkes, Guy Beale, Rob Harris, Stuart Martin, Jake Collin, Robyn Johns and Keith Hackett, and he’s looking forward to working with some of his old acquaintances: “I’ve known some of these guys for years, they refereed at the very top and it’s an exciting prospect for me to work with them.
“We’ve got plenty of knowledge and experience to give back and simply, my job will be to give our Academy members the best education platform possible. We’ve certainly got the resources, it’s now time to start delivering.”
