The Ref Show – 18.01.2016

Ex Professional referees Keith Hackett and Mark Halsey discuss with Alan Biggs inconsistencies in the game and a round up of discussion points from the weekend.

Also have a look at………..

‘Hackett’s Blog’ where the former top referee and General Manager of the PGMOL continues to offer opinion on how English refereeing standards could be improved, and it is clear why YATR followers know this is the place for all referees to improve their knowledge, understanding and performance.

And do you think?

Has football become a non-contact sport? You hear the question all the time, as if it were a new one. But, to all intents and purposes, it was the main item on the agenda 152 years ago when the Football Association’s founding fathers met in a London tavern to devise the Laws of the Game. All you need to do is change the tense. ‘Should football be a non-contact sport?’ That was the essence of what Ebenezer Morley and colleagues were deciding.

Well that was a thrilling game – entertaining and a credit to EPL – 2 LIVE GAMES TODAY AND 13 GOALS SCORED THAT MUST BE A RECORD!

As for CRAIG and his team then for me he has been the quiet star man of this entertaining game.

We discussed at half the attributes that Craig had displayed:

For me to half time Craig has shown:

  • Very good overall match control of a very high profile live TV game!
  • A stepped approach to match control, he has talked to players, ok he could have shown the yellow card in the 2nd minute as per BLOG
  • He is getting into great viewing positions in and around the penalty area to get those all important 2 big key decisions right – the goal and penalty kick
  • His body language is positive and he is allowing a number of advantages which is a real benefit to the game!

I thought the way he managed the game, the players and the event was a real credit to Craig. His recognition of foul and non foul was of a high standard and I mentioned in my BLOG that I had seen a real improvement in his urgency, movement and positioning together with explosive sprints. All 5 yellow cards were correct 2 for WHU and 3 for MC. There was just the 2nd minute challenge by Kouyate were I felt a yellow card would have been correct, however overall this has been a really good refereeing performance by Craig and his team.

Both Assistants supported Craig very well, low key and effective such was Craig`s overall match control tonight.

All offside judgements were correct and 1 flag indication for offside by both AR`s was correct

Near post challenge by 2 players for the ball as it rebounds out of play SC would have supported CP HERE IN A CK DECISION to WHU

WHU sub at 86

AM at 2016-01-23 20:16:00

11 off 26 on

Foul on Sterling?

AM at 2016-01-23 20:15:10

Not given? looked to be a holding offence on Sterling but not given – not the best view for CP to judge here

21 off and 6 on as MC chase a win now

AM at 2016-01-23 20:11:40

GOAL!2-2 Aguero – looked disappointed after that goal as he attempted to get the ball back quickly, with WHU players moving in to get the ball. Did you notice CP alert to that and he quickly calms matters – good preventative refereeing seen here

Last WHU attack

AM at 2016-01-23 20:08:47

Again good movement, width and angle down the left channel seen from CP in that last WHU attack

Craig is showing a real urgency and focus

AM at 2016-01-23 19:56:39

We have picked Craig up before on YATR for not showing enough urgency well today for me he is really showing those attributes

AM at 2016-01-23 19:45:51

GOAL!

2-1 – Valancia scores HIS 2nd following a quickly taken throw in close to SC

Good respect shown to CP by players from both teams

AM at 2016-01-23 19:44:32

Also CP is using both Captains very well off the ball. Delph hits the post as the ball just comes off Byram`s heels

51

AM at 2016-01-23 19:41:41

FK to WHU with good support from DB also via the comms – no fk good judgement from CP no fk to WHU in that last attack

49

AM at 2016-01-23 19:40:19

FK to WHU as Collins goes down in a challenge with De Bruyne correct to award and is a safe fk to in the defending third

46

AM at 2016-01-23 19:37:47

MC fk as CP slightly delayed his whistle to see if he could get any advantage out of it. Spray is out – 9.15m from the ball placement  – CP has a word with Aguero as there is some grappling taken place prior to the fk

West Ham kick off as the bubbles fly around!

Half time

AM at 2016-01-23 19:18:43

Half Time

1-1

MC advantage again good reading of play from CP

AM at 2016-01-23 19:18:15

WHU advantage good signal from CP

AM at 2016-01-23 19:17:49

AM at 2016-01-23 19:17:25

Throw ins close to the Assistant in the attacking third then he will glance at feet to ensure correct whilst the referee views hands in the delivery of the throw in

Minimum additonal time

AM at 2016-01-23 19:15:43

= 3 minutes

43

AM at 2016-01-23 19:14:36

SC offers good support to CP to signal a fk to WHU – GIVEN FROM A CREDIBLE POSITION – which as an Assistant you want to be there to signal and support the referee

41

AM at 2016-01-23 19:13:10

CK to WHU signalled by DB who has made the judgement

39

AM at 2016-01-23 19:10:47

GK to MC awarded by DB from a position on the goal line

38

AM at 2016-01-23 19:10:05

Yellow Card

Noble reckless and worthy of a yellow

38

AM at 2016-01-23 19:09:03

A delay in that throw in award to MC as CP looks to SC and says come on help me!

36

AM at 2016-01-23 19:07:47

Throw in to WHU again good body language seen from CP in his award  – he is looking calm and composed

33

AM at 2016-01-23 19:06:05

Navas 15 careless challenge  – spray out and a good restart position from CP – keep an eye on CP`s position for FK`S in this area. He is achieving an optimum view

31

AM at 2016-01-23 19:04:05

Good advantage to MC  then this is quickly followed by an advantage to WHU – which then sees a reckless challenge by Demichelis Yellow Cardon Antonio – spray out and Payet has a tremendous shot well saved by Hart

30

AM at 2016-01-23 19:00:44

As we approach the half hour mark CP is showing an air of confidence, he is looking calm and composed for this high profile game. I am sure that Jon Moss his 4th Official will also through the comms be offering him support as well

27

AM at 2016-01-23 18:58:45

A slightly careless challenge from Byram on Clichy and CP rightly blows his whistle to signal a fk to MC

24

AM at 2016-01-23 18:56:53

That looked to be a triple advantage to MC from CP as Aguero keeps on his feet through challenges from WHU players

22

AM at 2016-01-23 18:55:56

As the ball goes out of play –  Kouyate stays down which always make it worse with players from WHU pointing out the missed fk – WHU physio is on

21

AM at 2016-01-23 18:54:35

No fk awarded to WHU as Toure fouls Kouyate and no free kick is awarded. I think the referees view here directly behind the challenge has missed the award. A wider view with an angle would have assisted CP to judge this challenge.

20

AM at 2016-01-23 18:51:49

On that last WHU attack and the ball close to the MC goal line with players challenging for the ball – did you notice CP`s position wide and on the touchline to view

CK to MC

AM at 2016-01-23 18:50:26

again good movement down the left channel from CP as the ball enters the WHU goal to judge a ck to MC

Key decisions goal and penalty kick

AM at 2016-01-23 18:47:40

CP has adopted good viewing positions for both key match decisions

14

AM at 2016-01-23 18:45:38

FK to WHU again following a careless challenge spray out as CP manages the fk to WHU

13

AM at 2016-01-23 18:44:41

Free kick to WHU given from a close and credible position from CP

West Ham Sub

AM at 2016-01-23 18:43:30

Jenkinson goes down injured following his challenge on Aguero – CP stops play as the ball goes out of play. Sam Byram is coming on as Jenkinson comes across the field of play to end his time on the field and on comes Sam Byram to replace him for his debut.

8

AM at 2016-01-23 18:39:58

GOAL!1-1 penalty scored by Aguero No 10 of Man City

7

AM at 2016-01-23 18:38:55

Penalty to MC foul by Jenkinson on Aguero – good position for CP to judge

6

AM at 2016-01-23 18:37:51

Man City hit the post

6

AM at 2016-01-23 18:37:27

West Ham appealing offside on that last Man City attack difficult to view that decision with no replay

5

AM at 2016-01-23 18:36:20

Dave Bryan (DB) is on the far touchline and Stephen Child (SC) is on the near touchline

2

AM at 2016-01-23 18:34:16

Kouyate puts in a reckless challenge right under the nose of CP and is fortunate not to see yellow for that challenge.

Build up to kick off

AM at 2016-01-23 18:20:19

Welcome to our refcam followers for this evenings Premier League game. A fascinating and crucial game for both teams.

West Ham can complete a first league double over Manchester City in 53 years and will fancy their chances given their run of one loss in nine games, albeit that being last week’s defeat at Newcastle. For City there is the opportunity to leapfrog Arsenal, and having tightened up at the back and containing Sergio Agüero in attack, the visitors will also feel confident of winning.
