Match Officials - Full time summary

AM at 2016-01-02 15:55:43

Robert Madley in his first game as a FIFA Referee will reflect on this game as one that he had full match control and he dealt with the players in a fair but firm manner, good movement seen with acceleration when needed. 2 yellow cards shown and I particularly liked how he dealt with the Lucas caution. He took his time and from an educational point of view this is good refereeing, he took his time, calmed the player, looked to get him back on side and then showed him the yellow card. Result from this process / communication? no further problems from Lucas, indeed nor from any other players. Try this process in your next game and see how effective it can be!

2 areas for consideration will be the WHU goal – a foul was not awarded following Antonio`s challenge on Moreno – this happened at the other end of play and the camera angle which RM did not have detected a clear foul – Moreno stays down and Antonio then moves back into play and scores a goal some 21 seconds later. RM seemed to be in a good position, but did not have the camera view that we all saw today.Could we have used VIDEO REVIEW in this situation? how long would we take and then go back with 21 seconds of play after this foul to the goal. One for discussion I am sure on this web site and the REF SHOW

Also 30 mins – Caroll challenge on Clyne – no free kick given right in front of RE – why did RE not assist RM here? he needed it and did not get particularly as the reckless challenge was worthy also of a yellow card? your thoughts please…     Please let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref or why not visit our Facebook page

Both Assistants supported RM very well today. Offside which is an Assistants key area were all judged correctly. SB was spot on with the 1st WHU goal – Antonio level with 2nd last defender when the ball was played to him. SL also came in with some correct judgements as I have mentioned in my BLOG.

90+1

L. remain fully committed to still get a goal back – RM showing good movement and follows this up with a fk to WHU

3 minutes of added time - minimum

89

AM at 2016-01-02 15:36:29

WHU attack then SL has an offside decision to make a judgement on – not given which is correct on replay

87

AM at 2016-01-02 15:35:15

SL had play in front of him for some time he then awards a gk to L. As an AR it is vital to retain focus and concentration in these situations – when very close in front of you

86

AM at 2016-01-02 15:33:40

FK to WHU – given by RM just in front of the WHU Technical Area

85

AM at 2016-01-02 15:32:36

SB signals a fk to WHU – THIS IS SUPPORTED WITH A WHISTLE FROM RM –

Further L. players appealing for handball not given correct – supported by replays – RM has a word with Benteke

78

AM at 2016-01-02 15:26:36

Tempo is right up with L. players appealing for handball against Caroll. Not given – which looks to be correct – there is some low key pushing and shoving amongst players which RM sorts out – but again prior to the CK more grappling has to be dealt with.

77

AM at 2016-01-02 15:24:51

Cleared off the WHU goal line – SB would have had a position on the goal line. From the resultant ck RM has word with 2 players for grappling.

76

AM at 2016-01-02 15:22:51

Strong whistle from RM as Tomkins comes in with a careless challenge

WHU ck – indicated by SL WHO REMAINS CORRECTLY BEHIND THE CORNER FLAG – a number of seasons ago we used to come around onto the goal line – could this assist us nowadays with grappling offences?

69

AM at 2016-01-02 15:15:39

SB – L. offside

68

AM at 2016-01-02 15:15:08

In that last WHU breakaway good acceleration seen from RM – GOOD WIDTH AND ANGLE ACHIEVED

67

AM at 2016-01-02 15:13:48

Contested throw in SL decisive in his flag to indicate a L. throw in

63

No penalty kick to WHU Clyne and Can involved – looks correct

Referees Body Language

AM at 2016-01-02 14:59:49

Our referee today is showing good arm / hand signals and is worth looking at and being mindful of in your refereeing performance – good communication

48

AM at 2016-01-02 14:56:07

WHU allowed a fair advantage down the touchline on that last throw in – always good to be mindful of this as a referee

47

AM at 2016-01-02 14:54:13

Teamwork good on that last throw in with SL.

Followed up by a good advantage to L. good signal from RM

46

AM at 2016-01-02 14:52:58

Good early relaxed body language seen from RM with a good fluid movement around the field of play

2ND HALF UNDERWAY

AM at 2016-01-02 14:50:59

WHU to kick off

Half time discussion

AM at 2016-01-02 14:46:11

Robert Madley in his first game as a FIFA Referee will reflect on a 1st half where he has remained in control of play and has communicated well with the players.

2 areas for consideration will be the WHU goal – a foul was not awarded following Antonio`s challenge on Moreno – this happened at the other end of play and the camera angle which RM did have detected a clear foul – Moreno stays down and Antonio then moves back into play and scores a goal some 21 seconds later.

Throw ins close to you as an Assistant always good to assist the player with your verbal communication to the correct position

45+3

AM at 2016-01-02 14:34:03

Moreno not given offside by SL despite WHU protests

45+1

AM at 2016-01-02 14:33:09

Emer Can 23 hits the bar – officials need to be aware of the follow up in these situations

5 mins additional time - minimum

AM at 2016-01-02 14:30:32

43

AM at 2016-01-02 14:29:51

RM just then showing a sudden burst of pace as he gets caught in midfield in that last breakaway by WHU – A wider view on the move would assist here

42

AM at 2016-01-02 14:28:18

SB there to award a goal kick to L.

41

AM at 2016-01-02 14:27:47

From that last long throw in to WHU – SB would be checking that feet are correct on line – whilst RM would be checking arms in the throw in movement

WHU Sub

AM at 2016-01-02 14:24:59

28 off 14 on

Caroll challenge on Clyne - 30 min

AM at 2016-01-02 14:24:41

I wonder why RE 4th Official did not assist here?, when so close in front of him? and also a yellow card not shown?

36

AM at 2016-01-02 14:22:44

Lanzini now injured – physio on to attend and it looks like a sub is now likely

34

AM at 2016-01-02 14:21:38

Adrian injured in that last challenge and whilst he has hold of the ball – RM is quickly in, gets physio on – dropped ball to Adrian is the restart of play

32

AM at 2016-01-02 14:19:41

No fk against Collins who does try and move his arm away as the ball hits him on the arm with his back to play. No handball here is the correct decision

30

AM at 2016-01-02 14:17:50

No fk given to L. Caroll on Clyne – right in front of Jurgen Klopp – could Roger East 4th Official helped here? safe refereeing here would have been to award. Caroll was reckless and lucky no card was shown

29

AM at 2016-01-02 14:15:42

Caroll offside for WHU – Replays show correct from SB

27

AM at 2016-01-02 14:13:51

Kouyate injured – RM taking his time to check player – physio on

26

AM at 2016-01-02 14:12:56

GK to WHU – GOOD POSITION ADOPTED BY SL – to judge here on the goal line – ball just fully out of play

25

AM at 2016-01-02 14:11:13

SL – Liverpool offside

23

AM at 2016-01-02 14:10:44

Yellow CardLucas of Liverpool reckless on Noble – RM took his time in his delivery of this card using his time well to also calm down Lucas. Far to often the yellow card is flashed at a player when time could and should be taken to have a 121 with the player and remind of his responsibilities on the field of play

21

AM at 2016-01-02 14:08:39

SB showing a good position level with 2nd rearmost defender – foul awarded by RM to Liverpool RM close to award

19

AM at 2016-01-02 14:05:21

Good non flag offside flag from SB – Valencia onside

16

AM at 2016-01-02 14:04:39

Lanzini hits the post for WHU

Yellow CardLanzini gets a yellow card for a blatant pull back – advantage played by RM who at the next stoppage shows the yellow card good refereeing here

West Ham goal

AM at 2016-01-02 14:02:44

Also for the WHU goal there was a very good non offside flag from SB – SB was in line with the 2nd rearmost defender and Antonio was level with the 2nd rearmost defender when the ball was played to him

What are your thoughts on the West Ham goal?

GOAL!

1-0 – Antonio – although Antonio commits a clear foul on 18 of L. not given to win the ball in the build up.

7

AM at 2016-01-02 13:54:44

No free kick to WHU followed by a fk to WH foul on Caroll

7

AM at 2016-01-02 13:53:28

High foot from Emre Cam on WH. player – RM quickly in to calm matters and manage with a word

5

AM at 2016-01-02 13:51:29

Again a throw in to L. good eye to eye contact seen from RM and SL

4

AM at 2016-01-02 13:50:24

Good early communication between RM and SL on that last throw in – RM showing a thumbs up to SL –
