Summary:- A very professional performance by Kevin Friend. Throughout he was well in control, having the experience and confidence to allow as much flow as possible, particularly during the scrappy phases of the game, and yet always being well positioned to make credible judgements when challenges were made. His “man-management” technique worked well and this was translated into penalty area action where there was little or non of the usual holding and pushing which is often seen at corner and free kicks. However, when the more reckless challenges were committed he didn’t shirk from issuing justifiable cautions. Good co-operation was achieved with his colleagues and he was able to maintain a very “low profile” with no threat to control. Kevin is a very under-rated official who is what you may describe as “steady” and who always produces a consistently good standard of control. He will be well pleased with tonights performance. Thanks for being with us tonight. Join us again next weekend for more premier league action.

SM at 2017-09-11 21:41:51
Referee again well positioned to see that there was no deliberate hand ball by a West Ham defender, hence no penalty kick awarded. West Ham substitution Sakho for Carroll. Huddersfield substitution Depoitre for Billing.

Good detection of a block on Huddersfield attacker. Huddersfield substitute Sagini for Kachunga.
SM at 2017-09-11 21:30:30
Yet another minor offence committed by a Huddersfield defender and rightly punished with a free-kick. West Ham take the league with a cruel deflection
SM at 2017-09-11 21:22:50
First corner kick to Huddersfield. The game is now getting stretched but the Referee still adopting positions which keep him near to play. Both teams make substitutions. Ayew for Hernandez for West Ham and Malone for Loewe for Huddersfield.

Yet another minor free-kick to Huddersfield. Good flag for offside by the Assistant. Yet another corner kick for West Ham.
SM at 2017-09-11 21:10:09
Another good flag by the Assistant to detect the offence by Carroll. This enabled the Referee to award a free-kick immediately.
SM at 2017-09-11 21:07:48
A good flag signal by the Assistant following a reckless challenge on Van La Parra by Zabaleta. for Zabaleta.
SM at 2017-09-11 21:05:46
Here we go for the second 45 minutes. An immediate free-kick for the home team. Yet another careless challenge by Schindler gives West Ham another free-kick. The Referee correctly penalising the foul challenges.

A first half in which the home team had the majority of possession and yet, apart from one shot that hit the top of the crossbar, have not really tested the Huddersfield goalkeeper. From a Referees point of view things have gone well, with most offences being of a careless type which were easy to detect and penalise, while allowing play to flow whenever possible. The two cautions were absolutely justified and ensured control was being retained at a good level with authority being asserted in a very “low key” manner. The Referee has judged his involvement very well in adopting a “low profile” but adjusting his positioning well to always be close to challenges which enabled clear views to be obtained. Good co-operation seen with the Assistants and hopefully the same again throughout the second half.

Another minor careless challenge gives the home team a further free-kick which again comes to nothing. A collision sees Mounie on the floor and the Referee decides advantage is not an option and stops play to award a free-kick. Yet another reckless challenge on Zabaleta results in a for Billing.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:41:19
Another corner to the home team and the Referee is closely monitoring the players within the penalty area. So far not too much holding etc noted with players apparently taking notice of the Referees involvement. Another minor offence committed against Zabaleta.which the Referee has to penalise.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:36:18
A good advantage allowed by the Referee following a careless challenge by Carroll. Silly challenge by Kachunga rightly penalised. A “quiet word” to the offender used by the Referee.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:32:22
Kouyate goes down in the penalty area but the Referee again very well positioned to indicate no offence had been committed by the Huddersfield defender.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:26:34
Joergensen fouls Antonio and deservedly gets . Once again the Referee had moved to be close to the challenge, hence gets high credibility of decision.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:24:11
A scrappy period of play but the Referee is doing his best to keep play flowing with a sensible view of challenges. A foul by Mooy with the Referee being close to play to award the free-kick. So far the Referees positioning has been appropriate for the pattern of play.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:19:53
Heavy rain now posing problems for the players.. Good spot of a handball by the assistant and a prompt flag signal allows the Referee to stop play immediately to award the free kick.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:17:20
A careless challenge by Antonio and the Referee well positioned to award a free-kick.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:16:00
Foul by Carroll. Referee uses a “quiet word” with the West Ham player. We’ll see if the man-management works. Again a pushing/holding offence by Carroll on Schindler is detected and penalised.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:11:16
Good detection of push in the back by Huddersfield attacker. The Referee sensibly stops play qickly following injury to Billing when clearing a corner kick by West Ham.
SM at 2017-09-11 20:07:22
First careless foul on La Parra. followed by foul on Zabbaleta. Easy for the Referee to detect. Another careless foul on Ince. Again the Referee is close and awards the free-kick..
