West Ham United v Chelsea

West Ham United v Chelsea

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 1 - 2

RH at 2017-03-06 23:09:33

The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Solid Refereeing performance from the in-form Andre Marriner
  • Read the game well both in terms of Management and Positioning
  • Two penalty calls, neither given , Possibly Chelsea the more unlucky

Andre Marriner delivered a solid second half display to continue the good work he started in the first period. He judged his involvement level well also, just the one caution in a game where we could have expected fireworks, only Kouyate could have expected to receive a yellow card also. No doubt about it, Andre is having a really good season, the past eight days confirming that he has that all important 'big game' confidence. Yes he may not be as technically clinical as the likes of Clattenburg, but he moved around well tonight and was never far from the action and got into good viewing positions in the final third. The only time I felt he could have done better was when Alonso got caught by Winston Read's boot which would have resulted in a penalty. I felt however that he was right not to penalise Fabregas for handball which looked more of a shoulder to the ball. Both Assistants did well and never let the Referee down, praise again to Richard West's decision to judge Hazzard onside in the build up to the first goal. Simon Beck also looks a safer pair of hands these days. All in all a good night for Andre and his team!

Costa rightly flagged offside by Simon Beck,

85

RH at 2017-03-06 22:45:46

Fonte goes to ground and takes Costa with him, surely a free kick?

84

RH at 2017-03-06 22:44:40

Important that all three active officials maintain focus here, Chelsea are clearly controlling the game, the match officials don't need to be the talking point tonight, this game just needs seeing home with no silly late errors!

The Referee cutting Costa no slack there as he held Kouyate in the penalty area, Andre Marriner has got into good final third  viewing positions tonight!

75

RH at 2017-03-06 22:35:20

Well its a game of two Assistants at the moment, Richard West definitely in the game more, but just as teams get caught out on concentration after they score, its the Assistant who is suddenly drawn into the game who can make that vital key match error, eyes in Simon Beck!

68

RH at 2017-03-06 22:28:56

The shape of the game has changed, West Ham have more territorial possession, Chelsea are reverting to a back 5, what does this mean for the Referee, sustained passages of play in front of the Chelsea back line, counter attacking from Chelsea will stretch his legs and Richard West will be required to concentrate for longer sustained periods as West Ham seek to pass their way though

63

RH at 2017-03-06 22:24:34

As usual Conte is not too respectful of the Technical area regulations, appreciate that Mike Dean doesn't want to involve Andre Marriner, but certainly no example to Referees climbing the ladder!

RH at 2017-03-06 22:20:49

Love it Gayle, you're so subtle!

57

RH at 2017-03-06 22:17:34

We've seen a decent view of the Alonso/Read challenge, still waiting to see if we get another view of the Fabregas 'handball' penalty shout, my first impression is that it was more shoulder than arm

RH at 2017-03-06 22:15:15

Meanwhile was Alonso's left  foot clipped by Winston Read? looked a reasonable shout for a penalty to me

51

RH at 2017-03-06 22:12:32

Fabregas leans into the ball and makes penalty area contact, but where shoulder or upper arm? The Referee was well placed!

50

RH at 2017-03-06 22:10:40

GOAL!Costa with space that he surely couldn't have expected makes it 2-0

Pedro catching Lanzini with a raised boot, for the first free kick of the second half

RH at 2017-03-06 22:04:48

The second half has started!

RH at 2017-03-06 21:57:11

A decent first half from Andre Marriner and his team, the Referee has read play well, he's got a bit close to the action a couple of times but overall he's got into good viewing positions and he judged his overall involvement level well. Kouyate is treading a fine line and on another day could have expected a caution for persistently infringing the laws with a collection of careless challenges, but the overall effect of the Referees game management has been positive and the players has reacted well so far, so no real harm done. Both Assistants look sharp, Richard West doing well not to flag offside in the build up to the goal. The harder half is surely to come, I just can't see he second half being played in the same manner

39

RH at 2017-03-06 21:41:16

When the famous Chelsea 3-4-3 formation reverts to a back 5 at times like this as West Ham attack, the Referee finds himself moving in front of the defensive wall and tracking play as it moves from side to side

37

RH at 2017-03-06 21:38:11

Simon Beck with a correct flag as Kouyate falls on top of Cahill, yes Kouyate again?

34

RH at 2017-03-06 21:35:48

Courtois getting close to the side of his penalty area as he fielded the ball, we have to give the Referee the benefit of the doubt there that he would have gone wide on his patrol path to have picked that up

32

RH at 2017-03-06 21:33:39

Kouyate receiving his final pre yellow warning in the presence of captain Noble following that grounding of Hazzard, so doubt what to expect next time then!

31

RH at 2017-03-06 21:31:24

TV Stats showing not many goal attempts so far but the game has been played a decent tempo and although we've not seen the keepers tested much yet, the Referee has covered much ground as both teams appear to counter attack at will!

26

RH at 2017-03-06 21:27:09

Credit to Richard West for correctly keeping his flag down as Hazzard ran onto the pass that saw him gain possession

25

RH at 2017-03-06 21:25:58

GOAL! Chelsea counter attack as Hazzard keeps his head to put Chelsea one up!

24

RH at 2017-03-06 21:24:45

Hazard and Noble come together and the West ham man gets the verdict as he was 'turned' illegally

22

RH at 2017-03-06 21:22:49

Kante grounds Carroll with a careless challenge that sees an attempted quick free kick, quite rightly the Referee wants to restart the game properly

19

RH at 2017-03-06 21:20:10

Ferghouli in hard that time as the tempo begins to rise!

18

RH at 2017-03-06 21:19:04

Luiz caught by Kouyate and that hurt the Chelsea player, words close in from the Referee!

16

RH at 2017-03-06 21:16:31

It been a lively opening with both teams attacking well, but so far player discipline has been good, enjoy that while you can Andre!

Andre Marriner tracking play well down the left hand channel towards the goal line as Snodgrass was closed down by three defenders!

9

RH at 2017-03-06 21:10:42

Easy offside call there for Simon Beck as Kouyate is offside right in front of him!

6

RH at 2017-03-06 21:07:38

Corner to West Ham but Carroll is grounded following an Ariel challenge with Mosses, looks like he caught accidental contact on his nose!

4

RH at 2017-03-06 21:04:43

Hazard on the receiving end of another careless tackle this time from Obiang

3

RH at 2017-03-06 21:03:34

First free kick of the night as Kouyate commits a careless challenge

RH at 2017-03-06 21:00:47

If you are watching the game on TV, Richard West is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Simon Beck is running the nearside touch line.

The following is an extract from Jason Pettigroves excellent ‘Runners and Riders’ piece that can be found on the ‘You are the Ref’ website ahead of each weekend’s Premier League action!

Andre Marriner: West Ham United v Chelsea                                                                                  Assistants: S. Beck and R. West Fourth official: M. Dean

League Cup Final one week, cracking London derby the next. Andre Marriner should be rightly on cloud nine.

Antonio Conte’s side head across town looking to cement their place at the top of the table, but West Ham have rarely made this an easy fixture of late.

The London Stadium crowd haven’t had much to cheer this season but the ground will be at capacity for the visit of the Blues, and they’ll be looking for a performance of real quality against the best team in the division.

Gary Cahill still hasn’t forgiven Marriner for an error against Swansea earlier in the season but another here is unlikely as the official continues to go from strength to strength.

Under the official, West Ham have won one, lost one and drawn one this season but, importantly, have had no complaints in any of them as to the standard of his work.

With the TV cameras in attendance for this Monday night game, one hopes his star again shines as bright as it did at Wembley.

Today’s Match Referee is Andre Marriner His Assistant Referees are Simon Beck and Richard West. The Fourth Official is Mike Dean

RH at 2017-03-06 20:31:56

The last time Refcam featured a West Ham home game it was a bit one sided, I suspect not today! With the visit of London rivals and Championship hopefuls Chelsea, this looks like being a cracking game as the Hammers seek to delay the progress of Antonio Conte’s men!
