Final Summary

AM at 2016-02-02 23:01:57

My final summary:

This was a game that from the outset I felt JM never got to grips with and let get away from him early on. Reference my BLOG. with the non award of routine free kicks which then cumulated into a missed Antonio handball in the WHU penalty area 9th minute. This then went on to result in a big decision red card 16th minute for Ayew –  violent conduct whilst no one can disagree with this red card decision. I would just pose the question if the earlier preventative free kicks and penalty had been awarded would this act of violent conduct still have occurred? that we will never know!

Key Match Decisions in the first half would be and are worthy of discussion because it is important to learn why these decisions were arrived at and how we can mirror from a positive point of view or learn the reasons why an incorrect judgement was arrived at? Was it poor positioning? Down to fitness and movement? Not creating the best viewing angle? Teamwork with Assistant and or 4th Official? Awareness? Reading of play? These are all areas that are crucial in arriving at our judgment of key match decisions. 9th minute Villa will feel aggrieved that they did not get a penalty kick awarded to them following a deliberate hand ball by Antonio 30 of WHU who has his arm in an unnatural position, blocking the movement of the ball in the WHU penalty area – JM appeared to have a good position to view so it would have to be down to his judgement. This is currently an inconsistent area in the EPL and does need to addressed through training, coaching and viewing these incidents. 16th minute red card Ayew – great support from SB here and this is where Assistants come in and support and are supportive to the referee with a better view. SB has also been correct in his offside judgements and in particular for both goals were offside key match decisions were made by him in keeping his flag on both occasions. Noble in the first half has escaped at least a yellow card with a pull back on Richards and then following a careless challenge has again escaped with no sanction, he was eventually shown the yellow card in the 2nd half and I am sure that MD would have offered JM advice here. Kouyate was also fortunate not to receive a yellow card near half time for that reckless challenge on Agbonlahor We have discussed JM`s positioning in open play and this an area that he will need to continue to work at and is as we have discussed in my blog. Jake Collin has had a supportive AR performance signalling for 3 free kicks, all offside situations were correct. 2nd half all yellow cards were correct from JM as he became more consistent in this area. Could MD have offered JM advice here at half time? if he did then well done because it looked much more effective in the 2nd half.

Mark Halsey and Keith Hackett join Alan Biggs on the Ref Show to discuss the referee’s performances during the FA Cup weekend and the Jagielka /Atkinson affair. Part2. With Keith Hackett, Mark Halsey and Alan Biggs. Discussions include Everton’s controversial Capital One semi final defeat to Man City and educational learning points for young referees.

Summary to follow

AM at 2016-02-02 22:37:51

I will give my final summary to you in a few minutes…

Full time

AM at 2016-02-02 22:36:47

Full Time

2-0

90+1

AM at 2016-02-02 22:36:05

MD holds up the board – as WHU make a sub 8 off 14 on

3 additional minutes - minimum to be played

AM at 2016-02-02 22:34:04

89

AM at 2016-02-02 22:33:33

Important now for all officials to keep focus to end of game as we approach 90 minutes

87

AM at 2016-02-02 22:32:37

Again good non offside SB – good position from him in line 2nd rearmost defender

WHU sub 30 off 26 on

WHU sub

AM at 2016-02-02 22:29:40

11 off 20 on

84

AM at 2016-02-02 22:29:18

GOAL!

2-0 In a fast WHU breakaway then Kouyate goes on to score to make it 2-0

Good onside call from SB

81

AM at 2016-02-02 22:27:44

JM is running a fairly predictable pattern in play and if you compare him to the likes of Clattenburg, Oliver and Taylor in their fitness / movement / angle of play,  then he cannot be in the best viewing positions to make those judgements /  key match judgements.

Villa sub

AM at 2016-02-02 22:23:27

Villa sub 11 off 9 on

AM at 2016-02-02 22:23:05

77

AM at 2016-02-02 22:21:40

Advantage played by the referee as Valencia has a good shot on goal –

76

AM at 2016-02-02 22:20:41

A great save from Bunn sees a gl awarded to Villa?

Public rebuke

AM at 2016-02-02 22:19:50

This is a key area for referees to use and one that can be really effective. If JM had used this earlier in the game would the game have seen the yellow and red cards that have been shown to date? in the early stages there seemed to be a number of challenges which were missed by the referee.

Collins Shove on Okore

AM at 2016-02-02 22:17:21

A learning area here would be a final word to Collins would have been beneficial as he had just been cautioned and he needs to remain calm to finish the game.

69

AM at 2016-02-02 22:14:57

Collins after his yellow card then blatantly shoves Okore whilst the taking of the fk takes place again no further action? awareness here?

25 off 18 on – Villa Sub

West Ham goal

AM at 2016-02-02 22:13:21

How ironic Antonio scores the goal and also should have had a penalty awarded against him 9th minute.

Yellow CardNoble finally enters the referee note book – lucky to be on the field of play

66

AM at 2016-02-02 22:10:40

Yellow Card

Collins reckless and rightly shown the yellow card – good supportive flag from Jake Collin here to help sell the decision

58

AM at 2016-02-02 22:07:56

GOAL!Antonio 30 scores the goal – to make it 1-0. Antonio was onside when the ball was played. Kouyate was offside just across from Antonio and was judged to be non active in this area.

56

AM at 2016-02-02 22:00:39

AV fk – JM is looking sharper now and shows some urgency in that last movement.

54

AM at 2016-02-02 21:58:27

WHU – offside correct from SB

53

AM at 2016-02-02 21:58:07

Contested WHU fk and the ball hits the post – awareness following this is always needed

51

AM at 2016-02-02 21:57:09

WHU throw in – SB turns his back on play and looks behind him. Not good practice here as you need to keep your gaze into the field of play (players) as you never know what may happen rather than looking at the ball behind you.

50

AM at 2016-02-02 21:55:10

No WHU fk – JM beckons to the player to get up – not a good practice to adopt – what if the player cannot get up?

48

AM at 2016-02-02 21:53:35

SB – WHU no offside correct – good position here

47

AM at 2016-02-02 21:52:43

Yellow Card

Song 4 pulls back 25 of AV – What is the difference to the Noble challenge in the first half? inconsistency I hear you shout! and you are right!

West Ham kick off 2nd half

AM at 2016-02-02 21:49:16

We are underway..

Big Decison Talking Points at Half Time

AM at 2016-02-02 21:46:24

Key Match Decisions in the first half would be and are worthy of discussion because it is important to learn why these decisions were arrived at and how we can mirror from a positive point of view or learn the reasons why an incorrect judgment was arrived at? Was it poor positioning? Down to fitness and movement? Not creating the best viewing angle? Teamwork with Assistant and or 4th Official? Awareness? Reading of play? These are all areas that are crucial in arriving at our judgment of key match decisions.

9th minute Villa will feel aggrieved that they did not get a penalty kick awarded to them following a deliberate hand ball by Antonio 30 of WHU who has his arm in an unnatural position – JM appeared to have a good position to view so it would have to be down to his judgement. This is currently an inconsistent area in the EPL and does need to addressed through training, coaching and viewing these incidents.

16th minute red card Ayew – great support from SB here and this is where Assistants come in and support and are supportive to the referee with a better view.

Noble has escaped at least a yellow card with a pull back on Richards and then following a careless challenge has again escaped with no sanction.

Kouyate was also fortunate not to receive a yellow card near half time for that reckless challenge on Agbonlahor

We have discussed JM`s positioning in open and this an area that he will be working at in the 2nd half.

Jake Collin has had a quiet half but equally all he has done has been supportive to date

Half time - we will discuss the key match decisions made by the match officials

AM at 2016-02-02 21:34:00

Half Time

0-0

45 + 1 minute min added time

AM at 2016-02-02 21:33:14

8 whu on 11 av – fk to villa – this incident is different to the red card and the award of a free kick would be the correct decision – MD would also have assisted here being right in front of him in the accuracy of the decision

WHU fk

AM at 2016-02-02 21:30:29

Spray out for this one as JM manages the fk – which goes out for a ck not spotted by JM

GK to WHU

AM at 2016-02-02 21:28:58

SB again in a good position to judge gk – GOOD BODY LANGUAGE FOLLOWED UP BY A POSITIVE SIGNAL – SELLS THE DECISION

40

AM at 2016-02-02 21:26:34

Jake Collin awards a throw in to AV as the ball goes out of play. Eye contact good here with referee

37

AM at 2016-02-02 21:23:52

Noble 16 careless on AV and again is fortunate not to get a yellow card here, particularly after the non yellow we discussed earlier in the game?

AM at 2016-02-02 21:22:24

33

AM at 2016-02-02 21:20:11

Again the ball goes between JMs feet as he attempts to get out of the way. I would like to see get wider down the left channel more as play attacks particularly in WHU attacks.

31

AM at 2016-02-02 21:17:45

Appeals for fks JM position is right behind play – he needs to create an angle to detect these situations – he then gets caught up with the ball in play

Last fk award

AM at 2016-02-02 21:15:31

This is where inconsistency is raised when a player is not shown the yellow card for a situation like this one? Noble shirt pull back on Richards

25

AM at 2016-02-02 21:14:04

Noble 16 of WHU blatantly pulls back Richards 4 of AV impeding his progress – very surprised no yellow card here?

9th minute no penalty kick to AV

AM at 2016-02-02 21:12:49

Looking back that the non award of a penalty kick to AV – JM seemed to have a clear view it would be down to his incorrect reading of this incident and recognition.

AYEW RED CARD

AM at 2016-02-02 21:10:10

For the red card then SB would have made a timely intervention in this situation and well done to him for having the positiveness and focus by keeping his gaze on this incident to advise JM RED CARD TO AYEW

21

AM at 2016-02-02 21:07:51

First real positive so far for JM and this is an advantage for AV

First 20 minutes

AM at 2016-02-02 21:07:11

JM has missed quite a few free kicks and needs to tighten up here and get into positions to make these decisions

16

AM at 2016-02-02 21:05:32

Red Card

Ayew 19 sent off for violent conduct – blatant elbow on Cresswell –

Simon Bennett would have assisted off the ball with this shocking incident and a deserved red card for Ayew – no place on the field of play for this act of violence

Collins is fouled by Lescott no free kick awarded?

AM at 2016-02-02 21:02:00

Collins is complaining no fk, this is quickly followed by a non foul award when Reid blatantly fouls the AV player. JM needs to sharpen up with his decision making!

9- BIG PENALTY CLAIMS BY VILLA

AM at 2016-02-02 20:57:54

Penalty shouts against Antonio 30 of WHU – HIS ARM LOOKS TO BE IN AN UNATURAL POSITION AND THIS COULD HAVE SO EASILY BEEN AWARDED AS A PENALTY KICK TO AV

Assistant Referees Positioning

AM at 2016-02-02 20:55:45

An important factor for all Assistant Referees is to retain your position in line with the 2nd rear most defenders at all times. This is an area that is key for offside situations and one that we can focus on tonight!

Last AV ck

AM at 2016-02-02 20:50:57

SB ensuring that the ball is in the corner quadrant prior to it being taken.

3

AM at 2016-02-02 20:49:59

Simon Bennett (SB) is on the technical area touchline and Jake Collin (JC) is on the far touchline

2

AM at 2016-02-02 20:48:14

JM in a good position to view players challenge for the ball (dropping zone) from that last AV gk

1

AM at 2016-02-02 20:46:21

Early free kick to WHU conceded by Richards

Tonight`s Game Build up

AM at 2016-02-02 20:30:27

Welcome everyone to this evening`s REFCAM coverage of the Premier League game between West Ham United and Aston Villa.

The last time Jonathan Moss was at Upton Park he was the victim of an astonishing rant from Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho.

He’ll be expecting an altogether quieter 90 minutes here as the claret and blues go head to head in a game that the Hammers haven’t won at home for four years.

A half-full Villa Park for the FA Cup defeat by Manchester City on Saturday says it all. Reaching the final of that competition last season seems a long time ago now.

“And yet, three league games unbeaten is – relatively speaking – a purple patch for Remi Garde`s Aston Villa. He will be desperate to keep it going.

“West Ham’s fine season sees them still in the hunt for a European place and home form is crucial. Slaven Bilic’s team haven’t lost in the Premier League at Upton Park since August.”

How Remi Garde will be hoping that that run continues as the Villans try and claw their way out of a seemingly impossible situation.

They’ve certainly hit a reasonably run of form this year compared to the back end of last year.

Jonathan Moss hasn’t been the luckiest of charms for the visitors, Liverpool scoring three the last time he was in the middle and Arsenal plundering four in the cup final the time before that.

This is a game of the up most importance and is most definitely a must win for both teams tonight for different reasons.

Mike Dean is a good choice as 4th Official for this game, his vast experience at this level coupled with his man management skills with both Managers will certainly be an aid to Jonathan Moss.

Feel free to interact with me at any time during the game by joining in on Twitter @youaretheref or e-mail at info@you-are-the-ref.com
