The referee “did ok”, but here’s the question, at Premiership level is “ok” good enough, categorically “no”  His performance probably sums up Mike Jones the Referee, in that there is frequently an incident in the game when his actions don’t meet the required standards.  Doing well for 89 minutes is fine, but it’s that one incident that can define the performance.

So how would you summarise the Referee’s performance this evening.  I am still of the opinion that the Fabregas red card could have been avoided, counter-act with the accuracy of most of his second half decisions, including the penalty award to West Brom.

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:50:56

3 minutes added time, fair enough ….

89

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:49:12

I am thinking that the Referee / 4th Official should allow as little time as possible for additional time, but within the confines of law.  Game done and dusted – let’s finish the game with no more cards and with the game under control.

85

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:46:13

No issues at all with the referees stamina and fitness, he is moving as well now as he did at the start of the game.

80

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:42:38

Yellow Card#23 for Chelsea, Cuadrado, getting what he deserves

80

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:40:13

10 to go – keep focused refereeing team – it’s not over yet …..

72

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:34:41

Have you noticed how the temperature of the game has diminished since the  departure of Diego Costa – I sense both teams will just play out time now …..

The disparity in opinions is part of what makes football, and officiating in particular, so fascinating. Let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:28:30

Our twitter page this evening is as entertaining as the game itself, I’m having to keep a close eye on both during this blog

65

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:26:29

Great debate on our twitter page involving @JussiTheCat @bradleymarvell and @2wheels04, amongst others.  Keep it going ….

62

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:24:16

Costa leaves the field of play – no surprise there and perhaps West Brom have achieved their aim ?

61

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:23:08

Yellow CardOuch – Craig Gardener on Costa – fully deserved yellow, West Brom continue to intimidate him

60

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:20:56

GOAL!  A screamer from Chris Brunt surely settles the contest, even with 30 minutes left …..

58

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:18:49

Dawson’s challenge on Costa just illustrating the point ….

57

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:18:10

West Brom will clearly target Costa in an attempt to get him cautioned again, something for Mike Jones to be wary of …

55

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:16:32

Unlucky for Remy – ball rebounds off the post and away to safety …

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:15:01

@2wheels04 also makes the point, and a good one too, that Berahino was stretching as he went for the ball, making the GSO less clear …..

52

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:13:39

Lee Carson @jameater5 is debating yellow or red, we think just a yellow owing to Cahill’s position, going back to  law which states  “clear and obvious”

50

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:11:19

Yellow card for Terry for the challenge at least ?

48

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:09:58

The consensus of opinion here at You Are The Ref towers says that Cahill was a covering defender and therefore no DOGSO – but what do you think – Let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref

46

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:07:44

GOAL!Berahino scores from the spot, 2-0 to the Home Team – would you have dismissed Terry for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity ?

46

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:05:01

Key time for Mike Jones – he MUST keep on top of the game in the first 10 minutes to decrease the possibility of further disciplinary action.

RCT at 2015-05-18 21:00:57

Half Time

Half-time is a good time to watch the latest Ref Show at http://you-are-the-ref.com/yatr-tv/the-ref-show/ with the latest edition featuring You Are The Ref’s Keith Hackett and former Sheffield Wednesday and England striker David Hirst.  Alan Biggs, Keith and David discuss the stellar performances of Mark Clattenburg and Martin Atkinson, in addition to some interesting thoughts on the quality of the Assistant Referees on the Premier League.

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:54:09

Half Time

An honorable mention in this respect is also due to Anthony Taylor, who, in my opinion, is starting to mature as a Referee at Premiership, and it would appear that the PGMO back this viewpoint as he has received 28 Premier League appointments this season.  He is my “one to watch” for season 15/16.

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:52:02

Half Time

So, who gets your vote for the Referee of the Season in the Premier League, amongst the candidates are Clattenburg, Dean, Atkinson and Oliver.  At the opposite end of the scale, which referee do you think is not worth his place for next season, and whilst we are on the subject, should any of the Football League referees be promoted to the Select group?.

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:50:24

Half Time

Yes, Referee technically correct in law with the red card, but was it avoidable – “ball in play, get away ..”

Half-Time

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:49:03

Half Time

Half time summary really goes back to my opening comments about Mike Jones always seeming to find some controversy.  Here’s a question for Matthew Greer aka @JussiTheCat, could the Referee had avoided the Fabregas red card by restarting the game quicker?

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:45:51

This a high tempo game, think what it would be like is there was something resting on it ….

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:45:13

Thank you to @JussiTheCat for your comments on twitter, not saying I agree with your thoughts, but keep ‘em coming ….

40

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:42:03

5 minutes to half-time, the Referee must ‘kill the game’ and keep a tight reign on proceedings to get to the interval with no further disciplinary action being taken

35

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:38:07

Yellow CardCard for Ollsen, thsi time a correct intervention from the Assistant and good use of the comms equipment ….

27

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:34:21

Another school of thought, was the far side Assistant over involved by indicating the penal offence ? ? Let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref

26

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:32:48

Yellow CardFletcher add to the card count

28

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:31:49

So, the key to that, from the Referee’s point of view – was to get it restarted as soon as possible, players don’t tend to argue when the ball is in play ! Ball down, restart, get on with it – if he had done that, could he have prevented the Red Card ?

27

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:29:14

Diego Costa Yellow Card- Fabregas Red Card- that came out of nowhere

25

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:26:08

Good call from Mike Jones, Fiilipe Luis got non of the ball ….

25

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:24:57

25 gone and for the Assistant Referees  it’s a focus and concentration exercise. So far, no penal offences and no offsides given, doesn’t mean that they have not made any judgments – the art of Assistant Refereeing is knowing when NOT to flag

17

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:19:31

Mmmm – did the Referee let Yacob back on the field of play in an active zone ?

15

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:16:05

15 minutes gone, so far no dramas have unfolded for the refereeing team – all ok so far …

12

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:13:56

Let’s hope West Brom don’t go for a “flat back 9” and park the bus – a massive Midlands Red Double Decker !

12

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:11:17

Goals can often be the ‘trigger point’ for an increase in the temperature of the game, keep it tight Gents …..

8

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:09:25

GOAL! Berahino from outside the area – that will open the game out even more – Chelsea will have to push forward

6

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:06:19

it’s been a good start from the home team, they a,have had the best of the opening exchanges ….

5

RCT at 2015-05-18 20:04:55

it will be interesting to see if this game is played with the usual passion of a Premiership match, or will it be “end of season fayre”

Here we go – good luck guys ….

Pre-Match

RCT at 2015-05-18 19:59:03

Some interesting comments ahead of the game from Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho who quotes “If I was the owner of a team in the Premiership, I would hire Tony Pulis!”  Really Jose, are you sure, if you owned a team, it would be the first instance of Premier League Owner/Head Coach, surely ?

Pre-Match

RCT at 2015-05-18 19:56:20

The match officials for this game are led by Mike Jones, who will be supported by Mike McDonagh and Derek Eaton, with Lee Mason on 4th official duties.  Mike Jones is not the most consistent of Premier League referees, with a recent opinion being that “he always has a mistake in him somewhere!”, but in his defense he has been on the Select Group for many seasons.  Perhaps his tally of 19 Premier League games this season, as opposed to Martin Atkinson (31) and Mike Dean (29), tells into own story.

Pre-Match

RCT at 2015-05-18 19:51:46

So, how do the Match Officials prepare for a game which is, in reality, a ‘dead rubber’, with Chelsea away and clear as Champions and West Brom safe in mid-table.  There can be little doubt that both managers have done a great job and it’s been a good season for both teams.  The answer as always for the referee and his team is ‘treat it like a cup final’, expect the unexpected and be professional.

Pre-Match

RCT at 2015-05-18 19:47:24

Nothing too much to report this weekend in terms of questionable decisions, with Mark Clattenburg and Mike Dean producing commendable performances with yesterday’s games.  However, Jon Moss’s award of a late penalty to Palace on Saturday evening was not the best decision he has ever made.  Replays showed that the contact occurred outside the penalty area, which was disappointing as he had had a relatively good game up to that point.

So, what’s your opinion on the appointment of Mike Dean to the Championship play-off final.  Would he of been your choice, or should the game have gone to Mark Clattenburg; did Mark’s North East location prevent him from being appointed ?
