Full Time Summary

This was a straightforward game in which Jon Moss and his colleagues did a sound job.  All four will be pleased with their contribution and this was a good way to end the season.  Credit to the referee for his approach to the game and although it was not the most testing encounter he will face, you can only control what is in front of you and Jon Moss did this very well.

There will be a minimum of 1 minute added time - well done Jon Moss!

DM at 2017-05-21 16:46:27

There is no benefit to either team or to the game as a whole by playing a large amount of additional time today.  I hope Jon Moss uses common sense and doesn't play any unnecessary risks by adding a lot of additional time.

Right under the technical areas, MC4 raises his boot and makes contact with an opponent. The referee correctly awards a free-kick to Watford.

81

DM at 2017-05-21 16:40:57

Careeless trip by W33 is correctly penalised by the referee.  The Watford player is very frustrated and the referee uses both captains and the players concerned to calm things down.  Good refereeing again.

DM at 2017-05-21 16:34:41

AR Halliday is a very experienced Assistant Referee but his directional throw-ins are rushed and this can give the perception he is unsure.  I would advise Assistants to momentarily hold the flag clearly and confidently so that everyone knows what the decision is going to be.

75

DM at 2017-05-21 16:33:15

As the game enters the last 15 minutes, it will be important for the referee to remain focused and concentrate right until the very end.  Although the match is no longer a contest, the home team could become increasingly frustrated and take this out on the opposition.

Good non-flag by AR Hatzidakis as MC10 runs through on goal from an onside position as he was level with the second last defender when the ball was played

Another good piece of refereeing from Jon Moss as he is ideally positioned to award a free-kick to Manchester City following a careless challenge on MC4

The Watford Manager has said something to upset the 4th official Kevin Friend.  Jon Moss sensibly comes across and has a word with Mr Mazzarri.

53

DM at 2017-05-21 16:12:37

Very good spot by the officials to award a corner-kick to Watford as the ball brushed the body of the Manchester City goalkeeper before going out of play.

51

DM at 2017-05-21 16:09:29

On that occasion Jon Moss is very well placed to correctly judge that MC4 fairly challenged his opponent and won the ball.

49

DM at 2017-05-21 16:08:04

Again, W33 looked as though he was fouled in the middle of he field but the referee chooses to play on.  It is important that the referee does not become complacent here.

47

DM at 2017-05-21 16:06:17

That looked to be a foul on MC21 but Jon Moss did not think so and allowed play to continue.

Half-time summary

Jon Moss and his colleagues have put in a solid performance during the first half.  Although there has not been any testing periods for the officials, they have on the whole given what was expected and controlled the match well.  The only area of development for the referee was his use of advantage.  Firstly, he signalled an advantage when no foul occurred in the build up to Manchester City's 4th goal and then he allowed Watford to continue when a foul would have been a better option, especially as at the time they were losing by 4 goals.  During the interval, the officials will be keen to reinforce the need to concentrate and focus.  Watford are likely to become frustrated if the scoreline increases.  So far, so good, let's hope it continues in the second half.

43

DM at 2017-05-21 15:45:51

MC22 clearly fouled W7 by holding his shirt.  The Assistant did not signal and the referee belatedly signalled an advantage signal once the goalkeeper had collected the ball and the Watford player protested.  In such a one sided game it would have been more astute to have given Watford the free-kick.

41

DM at 2017-05-21 15:43:59

Although the referee signalled an advantage as the ball hit the net, there was not a foul anywhere in the build up.  Referees should not signal advantage when no foul has taken place.

The referee is correct to ask MC4 to leave the field to correct his equipment as he has blood on his shirt.  The Laws do not allow this to take place on the field of play.

33

DM at 2017-05-21 15:35:41

Safe refereeing is when officials 'give what is expected' and don't take unnecessary risks with match control.  I think that Jon Moss would have been better advised to have given a foul for the challenge by MC17 on W1.

32

DM at 2017-05-21 15:34:13

Despite the protests of Okaka, the W33 did foul the Manchester City player with a careless use of the arm.  The referee managed the situation very well.  By talking to the Watford player he lets everyone know that he has seen the offence and his proactive approach will help reduce the risks of repeat offending.

30

DM at 2017-05-21 15:31:56

Careless challenge by W32 as he charges MC33 after the ball had been played.  Jon Moss did well not to overreact there, a free-kick was the correct decision, no disciplinary action was needed.

Another good piece of refereeing from Jon Moss as he correctly spots a holding offence close to the touchline.  A good feature of the referee is that he is holding the whistle slightly before penalising offences, trying to allow the game to flow and develop where he can.

14

DM at 2017-05-21 15:16:47

MC33 was offside but as the ball went through to the goalkeeper who collected it in his hands, the game was allowed to carry on.  You could not tell from the replay whether the Assistant AR Halliday flagged but if he did then the referee did well to carry on.

11

DM at 2017-05-21 15:12:47

Nice piece of refereeing from Jon Moss.  MC21 had his shirt held, the referee allowed play to develop before awarding a free-kick as no advantage was forthcoming.

10

DM at 2017-05-21 15:11:38

Good opening 10 minutes for the officials, they are giving what is expected and no unnecessary risks are being taken.

7

DM at 2017-05-21 15:09:35

Very clear indication of a foul by AR Hatzidakis for a foul by MC21 close to the touchline.  Correct decision and very well communicated by the Assistant.

7

DM at 2017-05-21 15:07:51

I talk a lot on ref cam about officials being tactically aware.  This means understanding the style of play that teams are playing to.  It is clear in the opening 5 minutes that Manchester City are packing the midfield area and are pressing high and attacking aggressively in order to try and score goals.

Jon Moss has had a decent second half of the season and although he has attracted criticism from some quarters, he is highly regarded by the powers that be, even being tipped as a potential successor to Mike Riley.  Coming in to this match, Jon Moss has refereed 29 EPL matches, showing 118 yellow cards and dismissing 3 players.  Con Hatzidakis could well be an Assistant on his last EPL fixture today as he is likely to be promoted to the National List as a referee next season.  Andy Halliday is an experienced Assistant, who despite his age will be hoping to retain his place for another season based on performance.  Kevin Friend will be managing the technical areas and he could have an interesting afternoon.

DM at 2017-05-21 14:48:10

The referee this afternoon is Jon Moss and his Assistants are Con Hatzidakis (technical area side) and Andy Halliday (far side), with Kevin Friend holding the boards as fourth official.

Appointed Match officials:

Referee – Jon Moss

Assistants – Con Hatzidakis and Andy Halliday

4th official – Kevin Friend

Welcome to this afternoon’s ref cam as Watford host Manchester City at Vicarage Road.  On what is the last day of the EPL season, the Championship and relegation places are confirmed, so today is about 3rd & 4th place.  Manchester City need a single point from today’s game to secure Champions League football next season.
