There was plenty of good practice by Craig Pawson throughout the game, and there is no doubt he controlled the game, however from a technical refereeing viewpoint, I do have the following concerns:

  • Craig was caught close to play on several occasions, and was hit by the ball on one occasion (which can happen to anyone), but his restart decision on that occasion was incorrect.
  • Sometimes player reaction tells the referees what he needs to know. The incident in the 68th minute which resulted in a caution for Capoue may have been avoided had the referee chosen to recognise the fact that the Watford players were aggrieved.  Was this a case for common sense over-ruling the letter of the law.
  • There were 2 very poor offside calls by Peter Kirkup – unusually for someone of his experience.

Full TimeProdl rattles the bar - Liverpool break forward and Success is cautioned - a frantic finish as the Away Team take all 3 points

4 minutes additional time for the Away Tea to hold onto their lead.

Liverpool are clever at art of 'time consuming' (legally), as opposed to 'time wasting' (legal).  They are not doing anything to draw the referee's attention, and they are masters at winding down the clock.

Is it safe to say that Watford's recent substitution has been met with limited success. Pun fully intended - sorry !

#WATLIV Another "rabbit in the headlights moment" as the referee is hit by the ball whilst standing on the touchline.  He stops play and awards the throw-in, but something tells me that play should have been allowed to continue.

75

AH at 2017-05-01 21:35:58

#WATLIV 15 minutes remain and the match officials need to stay alert and aware as the Home Team adopt basketball tactics to try and earn a draw.

68

AH at 2017-05-01 21:32:13

Yellow CardCapoue is cautioned for protesting that a goal-kick was incorrectly given to Liverpool.  He had a point, and possibly the player's reaction should have told Craig that something was amiss; did producing the yellow card draw more attention to the incorrect call ?

66

AH at 2017-05-01 21:24:38

Once or twice Craig has been the "rabbit in the headlights" as wide attacking players cut inside and he has been forced to take evasive action.  Perhaps a movement 10 metres wider out towards the touchline may assist?

#WATLIV - is this chess or if this football - tactics are currently dominating - we need some passion and unpredictability

53

AH at 2017-05-01 21:15:28

#WATLIV Not too many opportunities to apply the advantage clause so far, and Craig Pawson is a little unlucky that Liverpool don't make the most of their opportunity as play was allowed to continue.

49

AH at 2017-05-01 21:08:14

Yellow CardProdll's cynical challenge against Wijnaldum produces a totally justified caution and allows Craig Pawson to assert his authority early in the 2nd half

#WATLIV Here we go for the 2nd half - Watford need to push for an equaliser, let's see how the game changes following Can's goal

Half Time I am impressed so far with the referee's decision making and overall match control.  Some may say that he has had very little to test him, but I am not an advocate of that school of thought as focus and concentration needs to remain high, whatever the players are presenting to you.

Half Time

AH at 2017-05-01 20:52:49

Half Time

Well - I was just about to comment how poor the game was when Can produce a special volley to give Liverpool into a half-time lead.  This will make the 2nd half far more open as Watford need to press for an equaliser.

45+1

AH at 2017-05-01 20:48:49

#WATLIV At last - something to write home about as Can scores with a spectacular volley - 30 seconds of inspiration amongst 44 minutes and 30 seconds of mediocrity.

42

AH at 2017-05-01 20:45:50

Yellow CardLucas does a passing impression of Olympic diver Tom Daley - resulting in a correct yellow card for Lucas - and a wry smile from his manager who realises that any protest would be futile.

41

AH at 2017-05-01 20:43:18

#WATLIV Text-book positioning as once again the referee is well placed to judge that Can was not offended against - the next phase of place sees Lallana rattle the cross-bar, by far the best moment of the game so far .

40

AH at 2017-05-01 20:39:57

Just a suggestion of minor contact between Lovren and Deeney, no suggestion of a penalty-kick, even from the most ardent of Watford fans.

36

AH at 2017-05-01 20:37:29

Once again we have a decision, given with authority, by Craig Grundy - and once again he is ideally placed to make the call.

31

AH at 2017-05-01 20:34:13

As a football fan, my Grandad, who taught me how to love our beautiful game, would say at this stage of the match:

"This could do with a goal !"  Agree 100% Grandad !!!!!!

26

AH at 2017-05-01 20:29:33

This is a an object lesson in not getting involved when you don't have to - Craig is correctly letting the game flow because his direct involvement would simply not 'add value' to the game

23

AH at 2017-05-01 20:22:18

Here's hoping for an increase in intensity as this game, so far, has been a mirror image of many games this weekend, which have been a cure for insomnia to be honest.  Right on cue, Chan answers my request and forces a good save from Gomes.

17

AH at 2017-05-01 20:19:20

The disjointed nature of this game continues as Britos is forced to leave proceedings to be replaced by Kabasele.

10

AH at 2017-05-01 20:13:45

That's the first 10 minutes successfully negotiated, nothing to much to test the referee so far as Lallana replaces the injured Coutnho for the Away Team

5

AH at 2017-05-01 20:08:21

Watford are playing a very high, pressing game - it's key for Craig Pawson and his team to be wary of and the adjust their patrol paths accordingly.

2

AH at 2017-05-01 20:05:06

Tonight's referee Craig Pawson will be looking for a solid and sound performance this evening - his first decision is to show a degree of leniency to Sebastian Prodl for his challenge on Origi - I agree with the referee's decision on this occasion.

Watford appear to be safe, but will be looking for points this evening to 100% secure their place in the top flight next season.  For Liverpool, here's a chance to open a gap over Manchester City for that much sought after 4th place.  All this means that tonight's game will be a good test for Craig Pawson and his team
