The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Two first half Key Match incidents set tone for Mike Dean’s match control
  • An end to end counter attacking game with a fanatic finale where the focus was on the players!

Mike Dean will draw much satisfaction from his performance tonight in a game that was a great advert for Premier League Football. This Referee will make a call that others may hesitate to, I commented on the First half sending off and again to reinforce my view I still feel that Bakayoko gambled on making that challenge five minutes after having received a yellow card, when Mike Dean is in charge that’s not a wise decision. The penalty was not in doubt, Courtois had committed himself and can have no complaints. The second half cautions were solid and as the Referee had cemented his control well before that pulsating finale, it was left rightly so for the players to take centre stage. Both Assistants put in decent performances tonight which is timely taking into account the disappointment at Anfield yesterday. A great advert for Premier League Football!

This game has been settled in the final ten minutes, it is to the Referees credit that his match control has ensured that the excitement and attention has centred on the players as Mike Dean did the hard work earlier in the match!

GOAL!Surely now Watford have nailed it with a Deulofeu goal!

86

RH at 2018-02-05 22:45:05

Hazard gets the verdict which a TV replay suggests was fortunate but as three home players converged on him wasn’t surprising!

GOAL!Janmaat puts Watford ahead again! what a pulsating end we’re having to this match!

GOAL!What a fantastic strike! Hazard draws the Blues level!

78

RH at 2018-02-05 22:37:04

Taking into account Mike Deans length of service at this level his mobility has been impressive in this game, he has achieved some good viewing angles in the final third and as this has been an end to end counter attacking match, that’s really good!

In tempo terms this game has not slowed so far, Watford pressing high and with Chelsea battling to stay in the match has ensured an end to end encounter, physically demanding for the Match Officials but from a concentration perspective, all active officials have been involved throughout!

69

RH at 2018-02-05 22:27:20

Mike Dean superbly placed at that corner to view Girouds’s illegal left arm on prodl, great spot!

67

RH at 2018-02-05 22:25:41

Chelsea might be down to ten men but without a second goal this game is still in doubt, the next goal will be vital whichever net it ends up in!

63

RH at 2018-02-05 22:21:53

Yellow CardA Reckless challenge by Fabregas on Deulofeu results in the latest caution, again no doubt about that one!

61

RH at 2018-02-05 22:20:32

We talk about the stepped approach to Match Control and Mike Dean gives us a great example by gathering Richarlison and Watford captain Deeney together  to issue words of warning to the Hornets youngster

60

RH at 2018-02-05 22:18:17

Watford high pressure and the extra man advantage are clearly affecting the shape of this game

58

RH at 2018-02-05 22:16:56

Yellow CardLuiz kicks out at Zeegelar and its a nailed on caution!

56

RH at 2018-02-05 22:15:09

Adrian Holmes signals Richarlison offside but with Chelsea in decent possession Mike Dean plays on!

53

RH at 2018-02-05 22:11:40

That last caution was for Prodl, apologies

49

RH at 2018-02-05 22:10:19

Yellow CardZeegelar receives a caution as play is brought back, again not the heaviest contact you’ll see but it was late on Hazard and it hurt!

49

RH at 2018-02-05 22:08:25

Cahill wanted an offside flag from Adrian Holmes but Zappacosta was clearly playing Capue onside

48

RH at 2018-02-05 22:07:01

Cahill gets out of jail as Capoue makes the careless challenge, but Chelsea under pressure once more as Watford press high!

46

RH at 2018-02-05 22:05:13

Azpilicueta gets in front of Richarlison and earns the free kick, great defending!

We’re back underway!

Not a good first half for Chelsea who are up against a lively Watford side, but two big call Key Match Incidents decisions made already in this game. The first being Bakayoko’s second caution as he attempted to regain possession after a heavy touch, to be fair it wasn’t the fiercest  challenge I’ve seen for a second yellow but as I said given that he had already earned a yellow card some five minutes earlier it must have played its part in the Referee’s thinking, could it have been managed? definitely but I will never second guess a Referee who is prepared to make a big call especially when a player had gambled as Bakayoko did. Which leads us nicely to the second Key match incident, more straight forward here as Courtois did sweep Deulofeu out of the way and as happened at Anfield yesterday the correct call was made, good to see Assistant Ian Hussin flagging too. Perhaps Janmaat was lucky not to pick up a caution for halting Pedro’s attacking progress but other than day Mike Dean has imposed himself on this match.

42

Deulofeu did get an all important touch on the ball and then just as Kane did so at Anfield yesterday he got the verdict in a similar situation, in consistency terms the decision was the right one!

RH at 2018-02-05 21:44:02

GOAL!Deeney converts 1-0 Watford

Penalty as Deulofeu goes down under marginal contact from Courtois, Referee and active Assistant signal as one!

Janmaat halts Pedro’s attacking progress, could have been a caution and Mike Dean has to explain matters to Conte

RH at 2018-02-05 21:36:38

Not the most blatant contact from Bakayoko but given that he was on a caution already he placed his chances in the hands of the Referee! Who’s to say that on another day he may have got away with that

30

RH at 2018-02-05 21:32:41

Red CardBakayoko makes a heavy touch on the ball and treads on Richarlison’s toe as he attempts to recover possession, its reckless and he is sent off a second yellow

28

RH at 2018-02-05 21:29:58

Mosses controls the ball with his arm before shooting on goal, no controversy there as the Referee halts play, very sensible!

25

RH at 2018-02-05 21:26:50

Yellow CardBakayoko cautioned for that rash challenge Capoue, the Referee doing well to let Watford continue attacking until play broke down.

23

RH at 2018-02-05 21:24:37

Well a counter attacking end to end first half of the first half, giving Mike Dean plenty of opportunity to display his fitness!

19

RH at 2018-02-05 21:22:04

I noticed the one handed advantage signal from Mike Dean on that earlier Chelsea attack, following a block on Zappacosta

17

RH at 2018-02-05 21:19:01

As Richarlison broke down the left hand channel to attack the Chelsea penalty area it was interesting that Mike Dean went wide, worked out ok as he was well placed to award the corner to Watford

13

RH at 2018-02-05 21:14:41

Ian Hussin a bit trigger happy with that last offside flag against Richarlison, looked tight to say the least!

11

RH at 2018-02-05 21:12:56

Azpilicueta loosing Deeney at that last corner which could have proved costly, lets hope that the Chelsea player doesn’t resort to illegal means of blocking at the next one!

6

RH at 2018-02-05 21:08:08

Azpilicueta’s careless challenge results in the first free kick of the game

5

RH at 2018-02-05 21:07:27

Watford pressing high early in this game and Courtois coming under pressure twice, Assistant Ian Hussin  will need to be alert to such incidents

4

RH at 2018-02-05 21:05:35

A TV replay showing that the ball did make contact with Cahill’s arm but to have given a penalty there would have been harsh in the extreme!

RH at 2018-02-05 21:01:47

If you are watching the game on TV, Ian Hussin is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Adrian Holmes is running the nearside touch line.

The following is an extract from the ‘Premier League Referees in Week#’ feature that appears on the You are The Ref website ahead of each Premier League Weeks action!

 CRAIG PAWSON
Assistants: I Hussin & A Holmes
Fourth official: Bobby Madley

This is game 33 of which the first in Hertfordshire took place in February, 1980 and was won 3-2 in Division Two by visitors Chelsea.

In the reverse fixture earlier this term, Chelsea had to come from behind to win 4-2, while last August, 2016, it was 2-1 to the Blues at Vicarage Road thanks to goals from Etienne Capoue for the Hornets and Michy Batshuayi and Diego Costa for the Blues.

Referee Jon Moss cautioned Miguel Britos, Valon Behrami, Jose Holebas, Troy Deeney, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and Costa that day.

Craig Pawson has only refereed Watford in the FA Cup this season, their 3-0 win over Bristol City, as well as Chelsea’s away Premier League win at Bournemouth and their 3-2 home defeat to Burnley on the opening weekend. He was on duty in the technical area for Everton’s visit to Arsenal 24 hours prior to this fixture.

All you need to know about Craig Pawson:

Matches in 2017/18: 17 (12 on TV)

Today’s Match Referee is Craig Pawson, His Assistant Referees are Ian Hussin and Adrian Holmes. The Fourth Official is Bobby Madley

RH at 2018-02-05 20:40:18

These two teams will be reflecting on the last midweek round of matches with very different thoughts. Whilst Watford will be pleased overall with a point and a first clean sheet for a while at Stoke, Chelsea will be looking to get some respect back following the shock of the last Match day round with that 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. Expect a tough game tonight, Chelsea seeking a must have top four placing and the hosts needing points so as not to get drawn from their current 11th place into a relegation fight!
