In a game of few chances, and two sides apparently happy with a draw, there was one clear winner tonight.
Referee Cüneyt Çak?r of Turkey was absolutely brilliant.
He controlled the game and players from minute one to ninety, calling just about everything perfectly.
Having already been fourth official at the last EURO Championships in 2012, if he doesn’t referee this year’s Final it can mean only one thing.
Turkey must be playing in it.
Take a bow, Mr Çak?r.
You were outstanding tonight (again) and gave a masterclass which many referees (from local parks to Select Group) should study and attempt to emulate.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:38:21
That’s the end of the action for tonight as the teams draw a blank in Manchester.
Both will fancy their chances next week in Madrid.
Real will be in front of their home supporters and should have Ronaldo back from injury, but City will fancy an away goal in the winner-takes-all return match.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:36:57
Carvajal is correctly cautioned following a cynical foul on De Bruyne.
Our referee shows he is not letting his standards drop in added time.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:34:21
That is the end of the regular 90 minutes.
2 added minutes to go as Sterling wastes City’s best chance of the game with poor control.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:33:13
Madrid make a substitution late into the game.
Isco replaces Toni Kroos.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:28:20
Just 5 minutes of the regular 90 to go and we are still deadlocked at 0-0
GT at 2016-04-26 21:26:14
What a save by Joe Hart!
Point blank from Pepe, who will wonder how he did not score there.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:25:12
Marcello is fouled and wants a penalty, but Çak?r’s positioning is again exceptional.
He is right over the challenge and correctly awards a free kick just outside the City penalty area,
GT at 2016-04-26 21:23:40
It took 78 minutes, but eventually our referee showed his is human!
Kompany pushes Bale to the ground but Çak?r waves play-on.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:20:37
As they go in search of that illusive goal, City bring on Sterling in place of Navas for these last 13 minutes
GT at 2016-04-26 21:20:03
Vazquez earns the disdain of the referee as he goes down far too easily in the penalty area.
Definitely no penalty, and again no caution as there was some contact.
Well done again, referee.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:16:08
Less than 20 minutes to go, and still referee Çak?r is sticking close to the action.
Excellent fitness, work rate and desire to get into position.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:09:49
I am running out of superlatives for this referee.
His awareness is outstanding.
Navas blocks off his opponent in an attempt to let Fernandinho collect the ball.
But Çak?r is not for fooling, and awards the free kick to Madrid.
Simply brilliant, Mr Çak?r.
Any chance of you moving to England?
GT at 2016-04-26 21:07:30
Pepe bundles Aguero over, and correctly concedes a free kick
GT at 2016-04-26 21:06:08
De Bruyne hits the deck and looks up in the hope of gaining a free kick.
He doesn’t bother appealing too strongly though as he turns to see Çak?r is right there, on the spot, to make his call.
That’s how to keep the players quiet…be on top of the action.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:04:01
The additional assistant behind the Madrid goal must want a piece of the action as he clearly speaks to referee Çak?r, which ends in a free kick to Madrid.
Such a shame, as Aguero did not foul his marker.
Don’t spoil the referee’s performance please.
GT at 2016-04-26 21:01:50
…and he’s at it again.
Picking up on the slightest of handball decisions against Aguero.
Slight…but very correct!
GT at 2016-04-26 21:00:54
That is a really clever free kick given by referee Çak?r .
Kompany headed the ball wide for a goal kick to Madrid, but our referee still gave a free kick in a position exactly where the goal kick would have been taken from.
Why bother doing that, you may ask?
because it lets the players know he is still there, still watching, and still picking up the free kicks however small and insignificant they may be.
That is the work of a great referee and man-manager,
GT at 2016-04-26 20:57:59

GT at 2016-04-26 20:54:08
Remember all of you referees…
When judging contact…
Not every challenge is a foul.
Not every foul is worth a caution.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:52:43
Bale goes down in the penalty area under a challenge by Otamendi.
Two excellent decisions by referee Çak?r.
Firstly, no penalty.
Secondly, no caution for Bale as there was some slight contact but not a foul.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:49:32
Here we go as Madrid get the second half going.
More of the same please, referee.
You were superb in those opening 45 minutes.
Change for Madrid as Benzema is replaced at half time by Jese
GT at 2016-04-26 20:34:36
Without their talisman, Ronaldo, Real Madrid are playing an unrecognisable game tonight.
They look happy to settle for a draw, and take City back to Spain with the scores level.
It is, of course, up to City to try and break the deadlock at home but, so far, they cannot get a clear shot on goal.
The star performer out there tonight?…
Referee Cüneyt Çak?r.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:33:26
GT at 2016-04-26 20:32:50
In an effort to get through the Madrid defence, Aguero is correctly flagged offside
GT at 2016-04-26 20:31:30
That’s the end of the regular 45 minutes, 2 added minutes to go on
GT at 2016-04-26 20:28:36
Just 3 minutes of the opening 45 to go.
It’s been a very tight first half with no clear chance on either goal
GT at 2016-04-26 20:27:30
Good call by assistant Ongun as Gareth Bale gets his lines wrong, and is caught offside.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:26:37
Indeed he does.
19-year-old Iheanacho replaces Silva.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:25:16
Silva has a problem with his hamstring, and may have to leave the action for tonight
GT at 2016-04-26 20:24:28
David Silva sees the caution score at 1-1 after bringing down Gareth Bale, who was on a promising attack.
Another good decision, referee
GT at 2016-04-26 20:21:43
City sportingly kick the ball out so Vazquez can receive treatment.
No foul though as Kompany simply cleared the ball, which hit the Madrid man in the stomach.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:19:02
Handball given against Vazquez.
If Çak?r had not worked so hard to get close to that incident he could easily have missed it as it wasn’t obvious.
Very good decision, and excellent work referee.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:15:45
Carvajal has three little nibbles at Aguero’s ankles, and eventually concedes the free kick
GT at 2016-04-26 20:13:42
Ramos, Madrid’s skipper, is a very, very lucky man.
If Çak?r’s assistant Satman had offered him better help there I am sure Ramos would have joined Pepe in the book
GT at 2016-04-26 20:11:01
Pepe is the first in the book, and rightly so, as he slides in on De Bruyne.
Good decision Mr Çak?r
GT at 2016-04-26 20:09:59
With such a packed midfield the players are finding it difficult to find a way through and make clear chances.
Look how Çak?r is maintaining his positioning close to the action areas whilst the game is so tight
GT at 2016-04-26 20:06:08
Çak?r has got his message across without the need for that caution which was looming.
The players have settled back down, and the foul count has dropped dramatically in the last 10 minutes.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:02:40
Bale feels for contact from Clichy, and goes to ground.
No fooling this referee though.
No free kick is the correct decision, but no caution as there was minimal contact.
Take note some of you Select Group referees.
That’s how to do it.
GT at 2016-04-26 20:00:21
Deep into the City defensive third one second, then right up at the Madrid penalty area half a minute later.
Superb fitness and movement from our referee.
GT at 2016-04-26 19:58:44
Fernando is the latest guilty party as the foul-count steps up briefly.
Don’t be surprised if someone sees a caution soon.
This is not a referee the players should try to push too far.
GT at 2016-04-26 19:57:11
Free kick to City as Casemiro is late into the challenge on Fernandinho…and who is right in there to stop and retaliation and let the Madrid man know that is not acceptable?
You guessed it…that man Çak?r.
GT at 2016-04-26 19:55:17
I like this referee a lot.
Fernandinho taps the ball away after a free kick is awarded against City.
Çak?r holds up play, and publicly lets the City man know he will stand for no more of that.
No doubt who is in charge tonight, and what Fernandinho can expect if he tries that again!
GT at 2016-04-26 19:52:31
Five minutes have passed, and Çak?r’s approach is already paying dividends.
The players look like they are here to play football, not take liberties.
GT at 2016-04-26 19:50:31
To all aspiring referees…
Look how Çak?r is sticking close to active play in these opening minutes.
He is letting the players know he is there, making them aware of his presence.
If they get the message, and play football rather than fouling, he will undoubtedly relax his approach.
Top, top refereeing and man-management.
GT at 2016-04-26 19:47:59
Referee Çak?r makes his first call of the evening.
It’s a good one…foul to Madrid
GT at 2016-04-26 19:46:11
Manchester City take the kick-off and get us underway…
GT at 2016-04-26 19:39:37
It’s almost time for kick-off at The City of Manchester Stadium…
GT at 2016-04-26 19:23:33
As for tonight’s refereeing team…
These big games need top referees, and we have one of the very best in the world for this one.
Last season’s referee for the Final of this competition, Cüneyt Çak?r of Turkey, is the man-in-the-middle.
YATR followers will remember my commentary on Çak?r when he controlled the UEFA Champions League game between Arsenal and Barcelona in February.
He was outstanding that evening, and we are hoping for similar again tonight.
The 39-year old Istanbul-based official was aided by one same and one different assistant referee in London as he brings into his team Çem Satman and Tarik Ongun for this clash.
Fourth official is Serkan Ok, whilst Hüseyin Göçek and Bar?? ?im?ek are the additional assistant referees.
For all aspiring match officials this referee is one to watch.
Çak?r has the lot…poise, pace and a fine reading of the game.
So sit back, relax and enjoy watching three outstanding teams tonight.
GT at 2016-04-26 19:19:38
Hi everyone, and welcome to today’s live Refcam commentary.
And what a game this is as we bring a huge clash tonight for you to enjoy in the UEFA Champions League.
This is the UEFA Champion League semi-final, first leg encounter between Manchester City and Real Madrid, being played at The City of Manchester Stadium.
City will line up without their influential midfielder, Yaya Toure, who is out with a thigh strain, the same injury which also keeps Ronaldo out of Madrid’s line-up.
The outstanding Gareth Bale is fit to play tonight though, which will be a major boost for the travelling supporters and somewhat softens the blow of the absence of their hero Ronaldo.
City do, however, welcome the news that Vincent Kompany is fully-fit and can count on the outstanding Sergio Aguero to add magic to their attacking threat.
Their outgoing manager, Manuel Pellegrini, will be keen to put one over on his former employers, especially after being sacked by them after just one season in charge, back in 2010.
The match needs little else in terms of introduction, other than to say…
DON’T GO ANYWHERE!
This will be a great game between two fabulous teams.
Sit back and enjoy our Refcam coverage whilst joining in by letting us know how you think it will go and comment on the performances of our referee and his assistants.
