Well done to Roger East and his team, nothing controversial, the post-match talk will be about Newcastle’s comeback, and not about anything the referee did or did not do.  Thanks for tuning in, and join us tomorrow evening (8pm GMT) for high flying Leicester City against low-lying Chelsea, with Rob Harris providing your expert comments.

The learning point from a refereeing viewpoint is to be aware of ‘Trigger Points’ in games, e.g. substitutes, goals, cautions, etc which change the dynamics of the match – which certainly happened at White Hart Lane this afternoon.

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:56:41

Full Time

Well, the old adage of subs changing games has been proven again,as Newcastle take all the points with an additional time winner.  Although their away kit resembles something as seen on the deck of Starship Enterprise (ask your Dad if you are unsure), they played well in the 2nd half and deserved their victory

90+3

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:52:33

GOAL! Stunning , the toon appear to have taken all 3 points with late Perez winner …..

90+2

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:51:05

Roger East has grown in confidence as the game has progressed – a great advantage as Spurs push forward ……

89

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:48:26

Stellar positioning again, making the run and then ‘applying the brakes’ as required to avoid getting too close to play ….

86

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:46:03

Good refereeing by Roger East, Alli and Metrovic playing a game of “my dad is bigger than your dad”, no cards needed to control the situation ….

83

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:43:00

sorry – my error folks, Perez was cautioned, not de Jong ….

79

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:39:07

Much much better positioning, on the wide ‘S’ to get a great view of the penalty area incident and to correctly caution De Jong for his challenge …Yellow Card

75

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:34:22

MacLaren makes a formula one decision ……..

73

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:33:17

GOAL! Mitroviic scores from close range at a corner – inspired change in personnel by their manager perhaps ?

72

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:31:28

Yellow CardDanny Rose becomes the 3rd player to be booked – justifiably so for his hand ball

68

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:29:10

… and as so often happens, the cautioned player is substituted to ensure 11 players remain on the field of play ….

67

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:27:53

Yellow CardAnother well-timed caution, this time for Carroll ….

66

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:26:49

Another accurate penal offence decision by the referee, this time just in front of the technical area ( aka –  the 3rd penalty area), it’s so important to ensure accuracy of decisions in order to keep in manager’s quiet ….

63

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:23:19

Ha – much better Mr East – down the channel as Spurs developed their attack ….. I wonder if he has the RefCam feed being relayed to him LOL !!!!!!

62

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:21:12

Don’t forget – keep your comments coming on all matters refereeing to @youaretheref, it’s great to hear from you ….

58

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:18:07

Usian Bolt couldn’t have got to the goal-line to assist with that ball out decision !

57

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:15:40

Having said all that, the match remains well under the Referee’s control and his interventions are contributing to a good open game, with actions in both penalty areas …..

52

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:13:26

It would be interesting to see the Ref’s Prozone map after the game …….

50

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:12:03

Sorry, this is beginning to frustrate me now, a 10 metre movement towards the touchline would be so beneficial for the referee, and he has the fitness to do so. He was too far from play as Cisse moved into the penalty area.

48

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:07:22

Once again, great positional sense as the attack developed to his right ….

47

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:06:10

Interesting, Roger East displaying A1 positional sense as the attack developed in the Assistant Referee’s quarter, but he seems reluctant to push on in his own quarter, one to keep an eye on in the 2nd half.

46

RCT at 2015-12-13 18:03:24

So, here we go for the 2nd half – the first 10/15 minutes of the 2nd half is always key in any game …..

Newcastle are not exactly pedestrian either …..

Half Time

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:53:53

This game has provided an excellent illustration of how physically fit the referee’s need to be in today’s game at the top level.  Tottenham’ speed of attack is swift, to say the least, and it’s about physical fitness and then having the mental agility to make decisions at pace ….

Half Time

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:49:52

Half Time

Referee Roger East should be pleased with his afternoon so far, maybe some adjustment required as attacking play moves deep into the referee’s quarter, but that apart, so far so good.

42

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:44:17

Mmmmm – perhaps the first questionable call of the afternoon so far, would my recommendation to squeeze play assisted the referee make the correct call in this instance ?

39

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:41:25

GOAL! 1-0 Dier opens the scoring with a powerful header – probably about right on the balance of play – 5 mins of key of key focus time for the refereeing team to safely see the game through to half-time

38

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:39:34

Good, low profile and accurate interventions by both Assistant Referees so far, just what is needed at this level – less is more ….

36

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:37:36

Terrific goal keeping by Elliot retains parity as we approach the half-time interval

35

at 2015-12-13 17:36:24

10 minutes to go and the booking of Colback seems to have settled the referee down, his body language looks far more relaxed, which will improve his decision making capability, not that he has got much wrong so far ….

31

at 2015-12-13 17:33:22

I reckon that a Home Team player might just follow Jack Colbeck into the book before half-time …

27

at 2015-12-13 17:32:02

Yellow CardThe game’s first yellow – well timed and justified, key to ensure that the referee asserts his authority as the temperature of the game rises …..

24

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:28:45

Great awareness by Roger East – Karl Walker has to re-enter the field of play before he can take the throw-in, one for the anoraks ……

24

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:27:14

Great awareness by Roger East – Karl Walker has to re-enter the field of play before he can take the throw-in, one for the anoraks ……

23

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:25:29

I agree with Roger East (and Mike Dean’s) interpretation that Karl Walker’s injury was somewhat self inflicted

23

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:23:33

Half-way through the 1st half and only 1 shot on goal, although it is a fast and furious game …

19

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:21:50

That was a good forst call by Mark Scholes, his first intervention of the afternoon was an accurate …

No votes from you so far on twitter on the Clattenburg v Atkinson Euro 2016 debate, let us know who you think should be appointed by tweeting us @youaretheref

15

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:15:54

15 gone and no dramas so far, although if you compare the movement and body language of Roger East as compared to Kevin Friend at Villa Park, there is no comparison – Roger still looks a little anxious, he just needs to relax and let the game come to him ….

10

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:11:36

And if you don’t know what an ‘inside-left’ was, ask your Dad, or possibly your Grandad …..

9

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:10:21

Not sure about Roger East’s position as Danny Rose overlapped, he was too distant from play and needed to squeeze closer to the penalty area in the ‘inside-left’ channel

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:07:33

It’s interesting that the PGMO have decided to appoint 2 relatively inexperienced Assistant’s to this game, would putting Cann, Mullarkey and co been wiser ?

3

RCT at 2015-12-13 17:03:40

Impressive early spring by Roger East – too much too soon – leave something in the tank Roger …

Here we go – good luck to the Refereeing team, Lee Betts and Mark Scholes are today’s Assistants, Mike Dean is 4th man.

Pre-Match

RCT at 2015-12-13 16:56:03

So it was the Euro 2016 draw yesterday, but who gets your vote for who should represent the English refereeing fraternity in France in June, the front runners being Martin Atkinson and Mark Clattenburg

Pre Match

RCT at 2015-12-13 16:52:03

Our referee today is Roger East, who has had a varied Premier League career since his elevation to the Select Group list.  The fact that this is his first TV game this season perhaps tells it’s own story in terms of the profile of the games trusted to him.

RCT at 2015-12-13 16:43:59

Its’ been a relatively quiet period for our match officials of late, one ‘interesting’ penalty call during our last game, although the match officials at Bramall Lane did not have the best of afternoon’s according to Mark Hope @owls_4life
