Commentary By: Stuart Martin

FINAL SCORE: 4 - 0

In games of this nature it is imperative that the Referee quickly recognises the level of profile that is needed to maintain control at a high level. All that was really needed was to keep out of the way, penalise the careless challenges, apply the Laws where cautions are justified and this in turn will lead to a very good performance. Anthony Taylor did allof this, ensuring he worked hard to achieve positions which placed him near to play and giving good views of challenges, and hence ultimately producing a performance where nobody is talking about him or his Assistants. Great to witness just such a performance in this game.

Don' forget today's second RefCam at 17.30 Bournemouth v Chelsea and tomorrows matches being covered: Sunderland v Manchester Utd at 13.30, Everton v Leicester City at 16.00 and Orlando City v New York Red Bulls at 21.00.

Thanks for being with me on RefCam.

Summary.

As expected this was a very entertaining game. The attitude and application of the players made it relatively comfortable for the Referee to produce a very good performance . However, credit must be given to the Referee for recognising that the adoption of a "low profile" suited the needs of the game without compromising control. He was able to apply advantage when possible without any danger or threat to control and there was no better reward to this approach than the Spurs first goal.  As I said in the blog the scoring of the goal does not preclude taking the correct disciplinary action and the Referee took the correct action.

3 minutes added time . End probably can't come soon enough for Watford today.

Cathcart foul on Kane. Free kick Spurs. Referee uses spray to mark 9.15 m for defensive wall. Full Time

S.M at 2017-04-08 14:17:05

Careless challenge by Alli. Free kick Watford.

S.M at 2017-04-08 14:14:39

Spurs substitute: Onomah for Son

S.M at 2017-04-08 14:11:44

Watford substitution: Kabasele for Okaka.

S.M at 2017-04-08 14:09:16

Vertonghen not happy with a free-kick awarded against him but the Referee was correct in his interpretation of Law as the Spurs player when "over the back" of his opponent.

Perhaps a trip on Alli but the players had no complaints and accepted the Referee's judgement.  This illustrates the acceptance of the Referees authority by the players and their attitude to the game.

S.M at 2017-04-08 14:02:34

A good flag by Assistant following Sons robustous challenge.

S.M at 2017-04-08 14:00:56

Spurs substitution: Sissoko for Dembele

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:59:25

Another advantage played by the Referee to allow play to flow following minor infringement. and players clearly happy to respond in a positive manner.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:56:57

Foul by Cholebas on Alli. Minor "dust up" dealt calmly by the Referee with a verbal rebuke to both players and award of free kick to Spurs.

Watford substitution Deeney for Amrabat

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:53:56

Referee again on the spot to correctly penalise Kane for minor holding offence.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:48:55

Think that's just his persona Simon Jackson. So far he's doing exactly what the game demands. Controlling the game while being virtually unnoticed.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:46:48

Good detection of ball out of play by Assistant.

Watford substitute Zuniga for Dioucoure.

Spurs substitute Kane for Janssen.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:43:13

A couple of careless challenges by Watford defenders correctly penalised.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:40:55

GOAL! by Son to make it 4-0

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:37:50

A fast counter-attack by Watford tests the Referee's sprinting ability. He is not found wanting.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:35:39

Second half under way with Spurs straight on the attack. Notice the position the Referee adopts on the edge of the penalty area for the Spurs corner kick  to give himself a clear view of goalmouth action.

Coming up later today on Ref Cam is Bournemouth v Chelsea at 17.30.. Make sure you join my colleague to see if Chelsea can regain their 7 point cushion.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:24:01

Half-Time summary:

A very enjoyable first half, particularly for Spurs. From a Refereeing point of view this is the sort of game where application of advantage can be risked to the benefit of the game as players are clearly wanting to "get on with it" as often as possible. So far the Referee has recognised this and has sensibly adopted a "low profile" which has allowed the game to flow and so provide an entertaining 45 minutes. However, he didn't allow this to influence correct application of law with the caution of Doucoure.. A very good first half performance. Same again during the second half hopefully. A quick cuppa then we'll be ready for the second half. Join me then.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:16:59

Good refereeing to go back and caution for the original offence when play stopped. The scoring of a goal following application of advantage does not override the necessity to take correct disciplinary action.

GOAL! by Son make it 3-0 to Spurs.

Half Time

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:09:27

GOAL! by Dier increases Spurs lead.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:08:15

An advantage played following an offence against Dembele leads to goal by Ali GOAL!. Doucoure given Yellow Cardfor the offence but the Referee got lucky by taking the risk of allowing play to continue. In this instance the risk worked and Spurs got the reward of a goal rather than a free kick on the halfway line.

S.M at 2017-04-08 13:01:33

Good offside judgement by the Assistant.  Assistants have to have good concentration when not much is happening within their area of patrol. So far so good.  Another careless challenge by Veronghen correctly penalised by the Referee who is also maintaining his concentration well.

Let us have your thoughts throughout the game on You-Are-The-Ref.com or on Twitter @youaretheref.

A fast end to end game but the  Referee is coping well in managing to achieve positions which are near to the action. A good example just now with the challenge in the back by Amrabat.  Close proximity not only gives a Referee a better chance of detecting offences, but also increases credibility of the decision and helps to stop any player dissention.

S.M at 2017-04-08 12:46:51

Notice the Referee using a subtle arm signal to indicate direction of throw to his Assistant. Good teamwork demonstrated there.

S.M at 2017-04-08 12:45:16

A good detection of Janssen holding off his opponent illegally. Referee well positioned to spot this and award free kick to Watford.

S.M at 2017-04-08 12:43:38

Good lateral movement by the Referee to open up his view for when a Watford shot on goal through a crowded penalty area.

S.M at 2017-04-08 12:40:43

The Referee using backward running to move out of the way while keeping play in view. Careless foul by Trippier, hence free kick correctly awarded to Watford.

S.M at 2017-04-08 12:37:30

Notice the good "no flag" by the Assistant following the shot on goal with a Spurs player in an offside position who was not interfering with play. I am sure that if this player had touched the ball he would have been given offside.

S.M at 2017-04-08 12:35:15

Spurs immediately force the first corner of the game.  The warm weather could well provide a test of the Referee's fitness.

Careless challenge by Janssen on Holebas. Correctly penalised with a free kick to Watford.

Good management of the defensive wall by the Referee and then comfortable save by the Spurs goalkeeper.

S.M at 2017-04-08 12:30:25

Spurs kick off and here we go on a beautiful sunny day.

S.M at 2017-04-08 11:56:33

Good morning and welcome to the first of today's Ref Cam matches which features Tottenham Hotspurs home fixture with Watford.. Spurs are hard on the heels of Chelsea but are seven points behind their city rivals. The visitors are entrenched in  tenth position, nine points above the final relegation spot and so are still in need of points to make retention of their Premier League status mathmatically certain. Both teams try to play attractive football so today's game should be entertaining and ought to be a pleasure to control.

The team charged with this are: Referee: Anthony Taylor assisted by S.Bennett and H. Lennard with Lee Mason acting as 4th Official.

I look forward to your company with me with k.o. 35 minutes away.
