So the talking points in this game were

  • Very intense and competitive game to Referee
  • Sustained work rate to maintain match control at the most competitive phase of the game
  • High level of offence recognition
  • Presence and player respect
  • Cognitive qualities

I asked at half time for another good half of Refereeing from Mike Dean but what we got was so much more than that! This Referee is officiating as well if not better than anyone else at the moment! There was just so much to admire today but what struck me the most was the way that he raised his game in that 46 to 74 minute spell where the play was so intense and competitive, believe you me that was a testing phase of a game for any Referee but to his credit Mike raised his game and I felt that he always had more in the tank, late cautions to several players proving the point, the highlight being the simulation caution for home hero Alli. Mike’s recognition of offences was superb! there were so many decisions to be made in this game it must have been mentally draining, but this Referee always looks calm and in control, Mike Dean demonstrated excellent cognitive skills today. Players can only respect a performance like that! This Referee is such a safe pair of hands. Credit to Assistants Stuart Burt and Eddie Smart they were on the Referees wavelength and were never trigger happy, One mistake from them in that second half spell could have undone all the Referees hard work, well done lads!  Games like this are a pleasure to report on!

Yellow CardAshley Young reckless on Danny Rose, a straight forward caution! All the United substitutes earning cautions! As Referees we should always be aware that players entering the game can affect the match Tempo!

Yellow Card+Yellow CardYellow cards for Walker and Depay for handbags, spot on!

Its also worth noting that Assistants Stuart Burt and Eddie Smart have supported the Referee well!

RH at 2016-04-10 18:07:17

Suddenly the game is so different for the Referee! Mike Dean worked so hard from the 46 – 74th minutes to demonstrate such a high standard of offence recognition and game management, he showed his mettle, kept his concentration and matched the players work rate, three home goals take some of the pressure off but the game still needs seeing safely home, but make no mistake this is a superb Refereeing performance so far!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:56:24

Games like this demonstrate why the Premier League is the finest League Refereeing stage in the world, no player has time on the ball, the next challenge is always a split second away and its only expert timing from the players that stops opponents getting injured! Its a high octane adrenalin rush and Mike Dean’s well up to the job!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:52:47

That challenge by Rose on Mata proving my point!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:51:59

Well still no change, its an intense game that needs monitoring closely, concentration still the watch word here!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:48:45

Young goes to ground again under a challenge from Vertonghen, this time the United man gets the verdict!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:45:25

Ashley Young goes to ground under a challenge from Vertongen, just as Stuart Burt flags an offside, the Spurs man lucky there as his challenge was both needless and careless!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:42:19

Its so tight at the moment, you just sense that its going to take something really special or a mistake to break the deadlock, concentration is key here and that obviously includes the Match Officials!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:39:43

You may not appreciate it but the Referee is having to make lots of decisions at present, there are numerous player challenges, they may not be careless or reckless but this relentless two touch midfield play is making the game very competitive, its a real test of the Referees concentration!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:36:52

Its all a bit congested in midfield at present, the Referee will need to read play well not to get sucked in

RH at 2016-04-10 17:32:14

The second half has started!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:22:56

Mike Dean is a Referee who is really on his game at present and there was much to admire in that half. Mike looks confident, he’s alert and with one exception he’s reading play very well. I like the way he powers around the field of play always getting a good viewing angle of important incidents. He’s demonstrating a sound recognition of offences and he ‘s working well with his Assistants. Its no surprise that he has the respect of the players. Just the one observation as I commented earlier, on a corner his side he made his first move a little to early when backing off which forced Danny Rose to move wide, but that apart a good half. Both Assistants are looking sharp also, another half like that will do nicely!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:16:31

Half Time

RH at 2016-04-10 17:15:41

A minimum of one minute added time!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:15:09

Smalling and Kane tussle and the Spurs player goes to ground, free kick Spurs, looked a close call that!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:13:15

A couple of cracking games coming up on Refcam this week! Join us on Tuesday for Champions League action when Manchester City take on PSG at the Etihad, that one kicks off at 7.45 pm. Then on Wednesday its FA Cup night when West Ham host Manchester United in a 6th Round replay following that 1-1 epic at Old Trafford in March! Kick off time on this one is at 7.00 pm.

RH at 2016-04-10 17:12:33

Eddie Smart flags Martial offside, the United player wasn’t happy, forget any deflections it where he was when the ball was fist played and as he was pressing the Spurs defence the Assistant had no other option!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:10:45

Attacking wing backs always require a Referee to move out wide and monitor challenges as the ball is being crossed or attempts to move in on the goal line to play the ball into penalty area, Danny Rose is a great example, just watch Mike Dean’s positioning as he gets into position to cover this!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:07:04

There have been some nice touches from the Referee today like his management of that half way line throw in for Spurs, having earlier awarded a foul throw against United!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:04:20

Lamella goes to ground under the merest of touches from Fosu-Mensah , no free kick given, correct call!

RH at 2016-04-10 17:02:38

Harry Kane over stretches himself and gives away a free kick against Rojo

RH at 2016-04-10 17:00:44

Both Assistants involved in the game now as Spurs are enjoying more possession at present!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:58:26

Great non flag there from Stuart Burt as Lamella was onside as he moved in on goal

RH at 2016-04-10 16:55:08

As Spurs attacked the Referee went wide to view any potential challenge on the left hand perimeter of the penalty area, as we’ve said before on Refcam this has been a new development in recent weeks!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:51:59

TV pictures showing that Smalling pushed Kane, difficult decision for the Referee as the offence was blind side

RH at 2016-04-10 16:50:28

Just an observation but Mike Dean may need to think about his corner positioning should the ball be played out to the edge of the penalty area, he was backing off and forced Danny Rose to move outside, Mike would have done better to delay his first move there

RH at 2016-04-10 16:47:53

Harry Kane has a stab at goal but Stuart Burt correctly flags him offside!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:46:06

A great opening fifteen minutes from Referee Mike Dean, he’s alert, he’s reading the game well and he’s always on the spot when making decisions!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:44:04

Eddie Smart by far the busier Assistant present as United are dominating possession!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:42:43

Good to see the Referee holding his position at that corner kick then adjusting as the ball was played in!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:40:38

Mike Dean delaying his whistle following that Walker push, good Refereeing!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:39:37

Lingard catches Rose late, just a free kick from the Referee without any words, looked worse than it actually was!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:38:16

Dembele conceding a free kick from a dangerous position with a careless tackle!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:36:26

Mike Dean making up a lot of ground to award Spurs a goal kick despite Martials protests, you couldn’t argue that the Referee wasn’t well placed!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:34:57

Interesting to see how the two contrasting styles of play will affect the match officials involvement, Spurs pressing high on their opponents defence and United slower possession led build up?

RH at 2016-04-10 16:33:26

Stuart Burt wisely delaying his offside flag until Alli played the ball, good stuff!

RH at 2016-04-10 16:30:48

If you are watching the game on TV, Stuart Burt is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Eddie Smart is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2016-04-10 16:30:11

Our match Referee Mike Dean gets us underway!
