Phil Dowd was certainly the correct choice for this game. He has had a good game and bossed it and his game plan to manage as far as possible worked well for him. The pivotal moment came in the 69th minute when Fazio challenged Hazard for the ball fairly just outside the Spurs defending penalty area. Spurs were leading 4-2 at this moment and this was a key decision for Phil to get right and he did. Cahill has escaped a blatant red card following his deliberate kick in the back of Harry Kane whilst Kane was on the ground and right in front of 4th Official Andre Marriner who one can only assume did not see this incident, but why not?. 4 yellow cards were correctly issued by Phil using his management skills wisely in the first half this gave him the movement and stepped approach in the 2nd half to help aid his match control. 3 Yellow Card for Spurs and 1  Yellow Cardfor Chelsea was correct. Fabregas was close to a 2nd yellow but Phil wisely used Terry as his Captain to calm matters and bring the game to a satisfactory close. There were also penalty appeals by Chelsea in the first half but Phil Dowd was correct not to award a penalty kick to Chelsea.

Mike Mullarkey gave a very good display with a good non offside judgement on the Chelsea first goal. Good support in terms of ball in / out of play judgements. Quietly effective and supportive and low key.

Stephen Child also gave a very good display all correct offside judgements and a good supportive flag following the late challenge by Fabregas Yellow Card

4th Official Andre Marriner has missed a crucial kick in the back by Cahill on Kane and this should have been a red card for Cahill on his advice to Phil Dowd but again for some reason this incident was not seen.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:31:09

My overall match summary is to follow:

AM at 2015-01-01 20:29:54

5-3. Full Time

AM at 2015-01-01 20:25:24

Phil Dowd is ensuring the correct amount of added time is played so that there can be no comeback on him for the incorrect amount of added time played.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:24:03

Goal kick to Chelsea when it should have been a corner kick to Spurs.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:23:18

Phil Dowd is working hard to remain close to play as he correctly awards a corner kick to Spurs. Terry and Fabregas spoken to by Dowd as Fabregas following a yellow card needs to be careful with a minute to go.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:20:29

5 minutes added time, no corner kick to Chelsea when it should have been. Although difficult from Dowd`s angle to view. Not in the best position to judge

AM at 2015-01-01 20:18:10

Chelsea break shot from Costa and a good save from Lloris, good movement from Child.

Yellow CardKane 18 yellow card, kicking the ball away

AM at 2015-01-01 20:16:09

GOAL!3 minutes and added time to go now 5-3.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:15:14

Paulinho careless he will need to be careful as he is already on a yellow card.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:13:24

Going back to the Cahill missed red card which is difficult to reason why Andre Marriner did not see? and why not?. It is just as well that Kane did not react as this situation could have been extremely volatile especially in front of the technical Areas.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:10:49

Yellow CardFabregas correct in front of Child, good support and management of this situation.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:09:56

Frustrations clearly now showing and Dowd and team must rise with the tempo as a poor challenge could see this game explode.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:08:43

GOAL!Chadli goal to make it 5-2 to Spurs.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:07:20

Cahill 24 has just kicked Kane whilst he was on the ground and close to the half way line. This should have been a red card for Cahill. Why has none of the Match Officials seen this? 4th Official Andre Marriner was right on the spot to view?

AM at 2015-01-01 20:05:42

Spurs sub 33 on and 3 off.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:04:09

As Chelsea press hard to get back in the game. A great save from Lloris and a corner kick to Chelsea.

AM at 2015-01-01 20:01:24

Paulinho 8 yellow card Yellow Card

Chelsea sub Willian off 17 Salah on

Fabregas free kick spray out good management of free kick by Phil Dowd.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:59:51

Fazio makes a good challenge on Hazard, no penalty and no red card correct decision. Phil Dowd gets into a good viewing position to view. Mourinho not happy and gives some advice to 4th Marriner

AM at 2015-01-01 19:57:22

Great touch from Kane, surely in line for an England call up?

AM at 2015-01-01 19:55:25

Yellow Cardpull back by Bentaleb. Correct on Willian. Spurs sub 17 off 8 on.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:53:20

Non offside flag Chelsea from Child correct

AM at 2015-01-01 19:52:24

In both of our live REF CAM games today we have not seen a card of either colour! can this continue?

What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2015-01-01 19:50:31

GOAL!Hazard goal for Chelsea to make it 4-2. This will make it interesting can Chelsea come back and draw or even win??!!

What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2015-01-01 19:48:28

Good non flag offside from AR Child Fabregas onside in the build up on 2 occasions.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:47:11

Chelsea free kick as they continue to press. Spray out for the 1st time.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:46:11

Chelsea free kick. Phil Dowd closely watching and monitoring

AM at 2015-01-01 19:44:38

Free kick to Chelsea slight delay by Dowd no advantage signal seen. Would have been better to just give close to half way line.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:42:24

GOAL! Great move and turn by Harry Kane to make it 4-1.. Can Chelsea come back from this? how will they react to this?

AM at 2015-01-01 19:40:58

Chelsea pressing hard and this is expected, can Spurs hold on to their lead. The Match Officials will need to be very mindful as the half moves on and stress levels increase on the players.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:39:20

There have been a high number of tight ball in / out of play decisions which the Assistants have judged correctly so far.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:37:12

Ball kept in play by Spurs, Kane on a very quick break and this is where Phil Dowd is some way behind play to make a judgement.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:35:18

Chelsea – HT Sub 8 Oscar off 7 Ramirez on

AM at 2015-01-01 19:34:16

Dowd blows the whistle to commence the 2nd half………

AM at 2015-01-01 19:32:40

Half Time3-1

AM at 2015-01-01 19:32:23

Half Time Summary

Phil Dowd will be happy with his overall management of this game. He has chosen his game plan to boss and be proactive from the outset with his player management. He has kept his cards close to his chest. However, in the 2nd half he will need to be mindful of the change in tempo, Chelsea will be out fired up from their half time discussion with Mourinho. Costa is on the brink of a yellow card for persistent and he will be watched closely as will other players following their actions in the first half. Replays have just shown that the Chelsea first goal was correct as Costa did not touch the ball in the build up although very close to the ball there was clearly no contact with the ball so well done Mike Mullarkey on this one!

AM at 2015-01-01 19:19:56

Half time – What a finish to this half –  Spurs 3 Chelsea 1

AM at 2015-01-01 19:18:55

Penalty to Spurs Cahill careless on Kane correctGOAL! Townsend scores to make it 3-1

AM at 2015-01-01 19:17:40

2 minutes added time. Free kick to Spurs, Costa involved again and Dowd will need to aware of this

AM at 2015-01-01 19:15:16

GOAL! Danny Rose scores to make it 2 – 1, what a comeback by Spurs

AM at 2015-01-01 19:12:48

Chadli offside by Child correct decision – good viewing position in line with 2nd rearmost defender to judge

AM at 2015-01-01 19:11:13

No cards as yet in this game, there could easily and should have been one yellow. Phil Dowd would be happy so far with his player management of the game….

AM at 2015-01-01 19:09:15

No offside against Hazard correct decision from Mullarkey

AM at 2015-01-01 19:08:17

Goal scorers involved in a foul – Costa careless on Kane.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:07:23

Throw in to Spurs correctly awarded following a change of mind by Dowd.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:05:45

Referees need video review help. With the higher than normal current key match incident errors in games it is my view that this current crop of elite officials are clearly struggling with the key match incidents in their games as highlighted on REF CAM and also through the weekly Ref Show. The elite official’s life is complicated by a sport that is quickening in tempo, gamesmanship and scrutiny. It is a painful reality for Mike Riley but all that extra fitness training, that psychological strengthening and additional analysis that is being undertaken has quite frankly not improved refereeing. Some would prefer things to remain as they are, enjoying controversy, but there will always be talk and it seems far preferable for justice to be done at the time rather than retrospectively. As the game moves into 2015 – will we see the inevitable, overdue and embracing of video technology. What if we could have used for the Chelsea goal ?

What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2015-01-01 19:04:19

Phil Dowd is adopting a fairly central position to view this game. He has chosen to manage situations and players from a distance, particularly from quick breakaways when he is some way behind play.

AM at 2015-01-01 19:02:03

Following Kane`s goal it will be interesting to see how the game develops in this half

AM at 2015-01-01 19:00:38

GOAL! Harry Cane what a New Year Cracker to make the score 1-1

AM at 2015-01-01 18:59:10

Free kick to Chelsea 5 Spurs Vertonghen reckless on Hazard. No yellow card to 5 when this would have been the correct outcome. I don’t think that Dowd had the best view of this challenge

AM at 2015-01-01 18:56:00

No penalty to Chelsea, correct not a deliberate handball. Phil Dowd spoke to Fazio just after Chelsea`s goal.

AM at 2015-01-01 18:54:39

It will be interesting to review the replays of the Chelsea GOAL. Have a look at Costas position he has to be active as the ball is played in towards him prior to him then in the next phase of play scoring the goal.

AM at 2015-01-01 18:52:59

Prior to the Chelsea goal. Ball not out of play for a throw in by Mike MALLARKEY is correct – not all the ball had gone out and over the touchline.

AM at 2015-01-01 18:51:46

Costa 19GOAL! scores for Chelsea  to make the score 1-0. No flag in the build up just prior to the goal but for me Costa was offside in the move just before then scoring the goal.

AM at 2015-01-01 18:45:38

Correct position by Assistant Child in line with 2nd rearmost defender. For the last goal kick he also continues with his run to the goal line.

AM at 2015-01-01 18:44:19

Spurs sub on 19 Dembele on for 38 Mason

AM at 2015-01-01 18:43:13

Ball still in play correct decision from Child on the goal line

AM at 2015-01-01 18:41:23

Costa is claiming a handball, no way ball to hand. Spurs sub coming up.. 38 off

AM at 2015-01-01 18:39:46

I am sure that in Phil Dowd`s pre match instructions he would have emphasised to his Assistants and 4th Andre Marriner to be vigilant at all times and to assist when better placed to view. Particularly in situations of long ball clearances and when Phil is working hard to get in the best viewing position.

AM at 2015-01-01 18:36:56

Free kick to Spurs, Willian careless challenge

AM at 2015-01-01 18:36:09

Phil Dowd will be looking to use every ounce of his experience at this level today. Early words with Danny Rose 3, following a challenge from Costa. Keep an eye on this

AM at 2015-01-01 18:33:21

Corner kick to Spurs from a signal from Child, whistle from Dowd re grappling, looking to be preventative

AM at 2015-01-01 18:31:39

Assistant Referee Stephen Child is on the technical area touchline with Mike Mullarkey on the far touchline.

AM at 2015-01-01 18:30:14

Referee Phil Dowd blows his whistle to signal the kick off to Chelsea

AM at 2015-01-01 18:28:59

As we near kick off sit back and enjoy what I am sure will be a New Year Cracker!

AM at 2015-01-01 18:23:49

Today’s referee is the experienced referee Phil Dowd the 43 year old who became a FA Premier referee at the start of season 2004/05 and who has so far refereed 14 matches showing 59 yellow and 6 red cards to date. He has also awarded 2 penalties to date. He is assisted by FIFA Assistant Mike Mullarkey and Stephen Child. 4th Official is Andre Marriner. We wish all match officials the best of luck today.

Phil Dowd started refereeing at the age of 21 and has enjoyed a lengthy career at the top level of English football since being promoted to the Premier League list in 2001.

He was first appointed as a Football League official in 1997 and quickly progressed. Four years later, he was promoted to the Select Group of referees and took charge of his first Premier League match when Fulham met Everton in December of that year.

Arguably his two biggest honours on the national stage came in major cup finals. Dowd officiated the 2010 League Cup showdown between Manchester United and Aston Villa, then two years later he was in charge as Chelsea defeated Liverpool in the 2012 FA Cup Final. The match came in his 11th consecutive season as a referee in the top flight of English football.

Tottenham

A very warm welcome to the 2nd of today`s LIVE REF CAM games which is to be played at White Hart Lane between Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea a local derby and I am sure is bound to be a feisty affair.

Have you made your New Year`s resolution as yet? well why not make your first one to be to wake up to Hackett’s BLOG as a must to start off your day. Be up to date with all the latest talking points to make your day.

Also tune in to Cards on the Table and the REF SHOW listen to England`s No. 1 interviewer Alan Biggs and Guests as he discusses the BAD and we must not forget the GOOD as well following all the weekend’s games.

2nd New Year’s resolution has to be to log into REF CAM keep up to date with opinionated, honest and accurate reflected thoughts of our expert team who have all officiated, worked and tasted life at the highest level on the FA Premier League.

My 3rd resolution would be to see an end to the diving debate once and for all. Let us see the FA take retrospective action against players who attempt to deceive, con, and quite frankly cheat and tarnish the image of our beautiful game. If they can do it in Scotland why can we not take retrospective action in England? Come on FA let us sort it out before it is too late!

My 4th resolution would be to see an end to the use of Substitutes in added time. A complete time wasting nonsense and used as a means to waste time with the winning team just using it as a tactic bringing off the player(s) who has usually made his way to the far side of the field of play and shakes everyone’s hand including the referee as he slowly leaves the field of play. Have a look at this gamesmanship in the game today.

My 5th resolution would be to see the use of video technology. With referees and assistant referees having in the main good games they are struggling with the key match incidents to get them correct. Why should the FA Premier League title, Champions League and Relegation places be decided on key match incident errors? let us use the video technology that is available to assist, help and come to the correct conclusion of KMI decisions.

What are your thoughts on ,my New Year’s resolutions? let us know.
