He was confident without being arrogant, adopted an appropriate low-profile method of control, and this worked extremely well for him.

The referee’s performance this evening was undoubtedly one of the best we have seen so far in the MLS. Okay, he will have more difficult games to control, but he hardly put a foot wrong and should be congratulated for a commendable performance.

90+4

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:59:31

Yellow CardKeeping control, a meaningful caution for Miranda for time wasting ….

90+2

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:57:38

If Toronto do pinch an equaliser, as they nearly did then, then Houston will feel hard done by …..

90

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:56:22

Ok, well I was a minute out, i can understand where the 6 minutes came from ….

89

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:54:19

What’s your money on the amount of added time – I’m going for 5 minutes – goal celebrations, substitutes, a couple of injuries …..

87

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:53:07

How do you think the referee has performed … Let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref or why not visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/youaretheref

85

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:51:46

I have little doubt that the match officials will be talking down the comms kits “keep focused, keep going ….

83

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:49:39

Another change by Houston, all designed to slow the game down – Chris Penso will add the time on, I am sure

80

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:47:45

The temperature of the game has certainly gone up, and here comes the predicted time-consuming tactics by Houston ….

77

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:46:06

With the referee doing well to prevent misconduct between Altridore and Deric in the Houston goal

77

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:44:44

GOAL! Well that makes the last 13 minutes more interesting, a goal from Altidore

75

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:39:49

Houston are looking increasingly comfortable and very much in charge, the referee will need to be aware of potential time wasting tactics, but in all fairness they just need to continue to play as they have been doing …..

67

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:33:36

Halfway through the 2nd half, the game is completely under the referee’s control, however a goal for Toronto will change the whole complexion of the game.

64

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:31:38

Ex Derby County player Giles Barnes rattles the bar from 25 meters for Houston, if there is to be a turning point of the game could that be it ?

64

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:29:37

I do like the Referee’s “low profile” style.  No fuss, no bother, just accurate decision making ……..

61

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:27:05

Once again the referee is well positioned to judge the penal offence challenge close to the halfway line; as he continues to impress !

60

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:25:21

With Houston very much in control, it’s likely that the frustrations of the Toronto players well increase. Something for the refereeing team to be aware of perhaps

52

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:20:10

GOAL!A stunning goal by Houston – well worked and a great finish by Bruin

49

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:16:50

The referee did well on that occasion to detect the ball had been deflected and to correctly award the throw in to the away team. It was also pleasing that he blew his whistle to help to sell the decision,

46

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:13:00

I get the feeling the Home Team will be very committed in the early phases of the second-half

46

RCT at 2015-05-10 23:11:58

Here we go for the 2nd half – let’s hope the game goes as well as the first half ….

As well as the usual considered debate on all the major decisions in the last week’s Premier League fixtures, this week’s Ref Show (posted on Monday), put the record straight in respect to the views expressed by the YATR experts over the “non-selection” of Mark Claterburg for this year’s FA Cup final. It is made abundantly clear in this show that everyone here extends their very best wishes and congratulations to Jonathon Moss and sincerely hopes he has a great game on 30th May.  His performances and accuracy in respect to all Key Match Incidents in his games are subject to exactly the same analysis and opinions as the rest of his peers and the comments aired about the FA Cup final appointment are purely concerned with the selection criteria process and not the individual chosen. This show, along with all the previous editions, remains available to view athttp://you-are-the-ref.com/yatr-tv/the-ref-show/

Half Time

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:59:51

Half Time

The refereeing team has had a very good 1st half, nothing controversial at all and the game is well under control. The Referees made 3 correct key decisions, 2 cautions and a penalty. The caution issued in the early part of the game has had the desired effect; let’s hope this continues for the second-half.

44

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:55:09

Stellar fitness levels, the referee well oositioned as the Home Team develop a fast-full length break

43

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:53:37

GOAL!Great positioning by the referee to award a penalty-kick ar Bradley offends and the Away Team take the lead

43

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:52:02

Yellow Cardgreat refereeing, he allowed the advantage as Toronto developed a promising attack.

38

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:48:01

That was a far better position taken up by the referee for the near post corner.

35

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:46:25

The game so far is somewhat disjointed, the occasional flash of brilliance, for the majority of time very few genuine chances are being created. As the saying goes “it could do with a goal!”. Not that this will worry the refereeing team, as always going well so far, with just 10 minutes left in the 1st half.

33

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:41:47

As always, YATR values your opinions on all the points raised by out experts via Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

As usual there are many other new articles in the regular YATR Mag area of the website including a commendation for the way Martin Atkinson flew the flag with honour for all English referees in his handling of the 1st leg of the Champions League Semi Final on Tuesday between Juventus and Real Madrid. You can catch up with the YATR Mag at http://you-are-the-ref.com/yatr-mag/

30

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:39:49

A good, clear decisive free-kick signal by the far side Assistant, that’s better

28

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:38:35

Having praised the referee earlier for his starting position at corner kicks, he now appears to be “stuck” on the edge of the ‘D’ at the far-post, which is fine in itself, but it needs to vary his position from corner to corner.  The last 4 corners have been played ‘near-post’

26

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:35:55

As happened in our previous coverage of MLS games, I have a perception that the referee appears reluctant to move wide as the ball approaches the attacking 3rd. This has not caused the refereeing problem so far, but is worth keeping an eye on

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:29:30

20 minutes gone, and so far so good the referee. His penal offence recognition has been of a good quality, and his decision to caution in the 8th minute was totally justified. Let’s hope he can keep this going.

15

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:24:11

The referee certainly looks the part, his stature and body shape are imposing and help him ‘sell’ his decisions

11

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:22:09

Yellow CardJustified caution for Toronto #8 Cheyrou, with the referee being well positioned to make the call

10

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:19:21

What did you think about the Assistant’s signaling for throw-ins, both Joe Fletcher (near side) and Gianni Facchini (far side) indications seem somewhat deliberate, this observer would prefer a sharper, snappier signal.

8

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:18:05

I like the positions being adopted by the Referee at corner-kicks, not afraid to penetrate the penalty area …….

3

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:12:38

The ‘sea of red’ supporting the Home Team on the far side looks impressive !!!!

1

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:10:48

A good confident start by CHris Penso, correctly awarding a free-kick to Toronto

1

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:09:02

Here we go – good luck to the Refereeing team ….

RCT at 2015-05-10 22:02:23

The experience Chris Penso is in charge, with 62 MLS games under his belt, and an ‘interesting’ red card count of 1 in every 4 games ……,

RCT at 2015-05-10 21:59:49

There is also a familiar face in the Technical Area, Owen Coyle is the gaffer of this evening’s visitors

RCT at 2015-05-10 21:58:04

One or two familiar faces in the line-ups this evening, Jozy Altidore wears #17 for Toronto, with Oscar Garcia leading the line for Houston Dynamo

RCT at 2015-05-10 21:50:52

Which brings me round nicely to seeking your views on who should be appointed to the play-offs, our own Guy Beale expressed his view’s during his RefCam coverage of Palace v Manchester United, as does Keith Hackett http://you-are-the-ref.com/a-55-year-old-appointed-to-a-play-off-semi-final/ but what do you think ?

RCT at 2015-05-10 21:48:38

Well there have been some key decisions involving the Football League play-offs, unfortunately a couple of standout incorrect ones, namely the missed penalty award to Sheffield United and the handball offence not awarded to Plymouth prior to the second goal when Wycombe’s Steven Craig clearly handled.

RCT at 2015-05-10 21:45:07

There has been plenty to talk about with our RefCam coverage over the weekend.  Michael Oliver’s handball decision making in the Crystal Palace v Manchester United game was commendable, especially the ‘brave’ award of the penalty kick in front of the vociferous home fans – he showed strength of character and a clear decision making process.
