As for our referees.

The assistants had a quiet day and did what was asked of them.

As for Andre, he refereed in a low-key manner and strolled through the game.

He may be disappointed with the missed penalty call by Sturridge, as well as his positioning for the shirt pull on Balotelli.

But, on the whole, he did well in a very good cup tie and can leave satisfied with his day’s work.

GT at 2015-03-08 18:59:21

So it’s back to Ewood for a replay.

Rovers will fancy their chances at home and, having dominated the first half today, will have no fear.

GT at 2015-03-08 18:58:25

Rovers came with a definite game plan and executed it very well, indeed.

Liverpool just could not break down the Rovers’ defence, and struggled to get shorts away on target.

GT at 2015-03-08 18:57:15

The added time seems a little ‘skinny’ as we have had substitutions and fouls…

but that is it. It’s all over

Full Time

GT at 2015-03-08 18:55:58

1 added minute to go on as we reach the end of the normal 90

GT at 2015-03-08 18:54:38

Yellow Card for Cairney as he brings down Balotelli.

That was a potential red card, studs-up challenge though.

Our referee is doing his best to keep it low-key.

GT at 2015-03-08 18:51:39

Chances are coming thick and fast for Liverpool, but this Rovers defence will not give way…

GT at 2015-03-08 18:51:02

Andre has a quiet word with Rover’s players as foul challenges are attempted.

Good refereeing

GT at 2015-03-08 18:49:27

Coutinho dances through the Rovers’ defence in the penalty area, and our referee is ideally placed to see no fouls are committed along the way

GT at 2015-03-08 18:47:51

Final 10 minutes and Liverpool are pouring on the pressure

GT at 2015-03-08 18:46:53

Baptiste is a lucky man as he tries to exchange shirts with Balotelli during the game…our referee doesn’t see the infringement, and the penalty is not given

GT at 2015-03-08 18:45:18

The home supporters scream ‘penalty’ as Sturridge goes down, but Andre calls that one correctly.

Play on!

GT at 2015-03-08 18:44:03

Watch Andre’s movement…

…a lot of walking.

He’s portraying a real air of confidence and calm as he strolls his way through this cup tie

GT at 2015-03-08 18:42:51

Henderson floors his opponent and the referee correctly awards a free kick to Rovers

GT at 2015-03-08 18:42:08

Good advantage played by Andre as Rovers attack

GT at 2015-03-08 18:39:01

Toure is the latest Liverpool centre half to struggle with an injury.

He may not see much more of this game, which would mean the substitute being substituted!

GT at 2015-03-08 18:37:35

We are in the final 20 minutes, and this one could go either way

GT at 2015-03-08 18:33:27

It’s time for Rovers to make a change as Taylor replaces Marshall

GT at 2015-03-08 18:31:36

Free kick to Liverpool in a dangerous area, having just had a stronger appeal for a foul on Sterling turned down.

GT at 2015-03-08 18:29:11

As the game goes up in tempo, so must our referee.

It is important he stays in touch with the game.

As despite the lack of goals this is an absorbing cup tie

GT at 2015-03-08 18:26:04

We are an hour into the game and the home side are beginning to enjoy a period of pressure

GT at 2015-03-08 18:25:14

…and the Italian is introduced as Toure hits the post with a header from the free kick

GT at 2015-03-08 18:24:30

Sterling is brought to ground by Conway again, who must be getting close to a caution for persistent infringement

GT at 2015-03-08 18:23:50

Balotelli is stripped and ready for action as Liverpool go in search of a winner

GT at 2015-03-08 18:22:18

Sturridge goes down in the box as Kilgallon puts his arms on him.

It was a very strong shout for a penalty…and sees our referee’s first major error.

GT at 2015-03-08 18:20:15

Naughty challenge by Rovers’ number 2 and he is very lucky not to see a yellow card for that challenge

GT at 2015-03-08 18:14:41

Great header.

Top save.

As Baptiste almost opens the scoring for Rovers

GT at 2015-03-08 18:13:21

Two minutes in and Andre makes his first correct decision of this half as he awards a free kick against Sterling

GT at 2015-03-08 18:10:34

The second half is underway as Rovers get us going.

….and well done to everyone who got the half time teasers correct.

The answers to the question are, that in their last five cup ties, 5 Rovers players have been sent off!

Whilst Liverpool have gone on to the semi finals on 15 of their last 16 appearances in the quarter finals.

GT at 2015-03-08 18:06:59

and here is one for you Liverpool fans…

Of their last 16 FA Cup quarter finals, how many have ended with The Reds progressing to the semis?

GT at 2015-03-08 17:56:28

OK…it’s trivia time:

What unwelcome similarity do five Rovers’ players share in their side’s last five FA Cup ties?

If you know the answer you can contact us either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

GT at 2015-03-08 17:54:20

Half Time

GT at 2015-03-08 17:52:17

Three of the added minutes to go, and it has been a good half of cup football.

Rovers have certainly ‘bossed’ the first half.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:50:13

and another good decision follows as Lovren fouls Gestede.

Free kick to Rovers.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:48:32

Another good call by Andre as Sterling goes down under a challenge from Conway.

Definitely no foul.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:47:09

Yellow Card for Can as he pulls back his opponent

GT at 2015-03-08 17:46:43

It’s been an impressive display from our referee this half, so far.

Andre quickly tuned into the game and realised this tie does not need to be over-refereed.

Let the players get on with at, as 8 additional minutes begin.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:41:57

We move into the final five minutes of this half.

There will be a lot of added time to come, though

GT at 2015-03-08 17:35:50

Big decision.

And a good decision as Liverpool have a ‘goal’ disallowed for offside.

A similar call for a penalty goes unpunished in the same move as Gestede’s arm and the ball meet…

GT at 2015-03-08 17:34:14

Good decision by our referee as Sterling is obstructed by Conway

GT at 2015-03-08 17:32:59

Wasted chance by Blackburn as Conway smashes one over the bar

GT at 2015-03-08 17:32:16

Andre just needs to adjust his positioning a little as he is getting caught up in Liverpool’s attacking manoeuvre at the edge of Rovers’ penalty area

GT at 2015-03-08 17:30:28

McDonough awards a free kick against Gestede for a foul on Sterling.

When in fact there was a great shout for a penalty to Rovers as the Liverpool man played the ball with his arm

GT at 2015-03-08 17:27:07

Good lining from McDonough too as he waits before allowing play to continue. Yes, there was a Rovers forward offside but the player did not get involved in active play

GT at 2015-03-08 17:24:54

It is the cracking cup tie we all wished for, as Rovers almost gain from a near own goal by Glen Johnson

GT at 2015-03-08 17:23:37

More good refereeing as Andre correctly awards a throw in to Liverpool,.

Not a major incident, but by correctly spotting all of the smaller ones he gains the trust of the players

GT at 2015-03-08 17:21:47

Great challenge by Kilgallon when the Kop was screaming for a penalty.

Excellent spot by our referee who awards a corner

GT at 2015-03-08 17:20:44

Gestede is everywhere for Rovers today.

His latest challenge on the edge of Rovers’ penalty area sees Countinho limp away.

Again, nothing wrong with the challenge though

GT at 2015-03-08 17:18:56

Andre is doing exactly what he should…

Staying out of the game and letting the players get on with it.

It’s a good, open game so why spoil it by being over-fussy?

Well done, Andre.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:17:38

Great pass by Henderson almost sees Sturridge in on goal

GT at 2015-03-08 17:15:51

Good news on Skrtel…he was taken off as a precaution after hitting his head on the ground.

Nothing too serious for the big defender, hopefully.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:14:51

Good to see a referee prepared to allow a centre forward challenge a goalkeeper without automatically reaching for his whistle as Gestede beats Mignolet in the air

GT at 2015-03-08 17:13:26

A little nudge by Henderson is well spotted by Andre.

Free kick to Rovers

GT at 2015-03-08 17:11:41

Indeed, Skrtel will take no further part in this one, and he leaves on a stretcher to be replaced by Kolo Toure.

That whole injury took 8 minutes to sort out, meaning we already have a lengthy add-on at the end of this half.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:06:10

Nothing untoward in the challenge though.

Both players were challenging for the ball. It was more the impact of his fall which has caused the Reds’ centre half to require lengthy medical attention.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:04:39

Gestede and Skrtel collide whilst challenging for an aerial ball, and the big Liverpool defender comes off much worse

GT at 2015-03-08 17:03:36

The opening couple of minutes are going to script, with Andre enjoying being able to let the sides knock the ball around freely.

GT at 2015-03-08 17:01:17

Andre blows his whistle, Liverpool take the kick-off and get us underway.

Buckle down, this is a mouth watering tie…

GT at 2015-03-08 16:47:55

It’s almost time for kick-off at Anfield, and The Kop will soon be in fine voice for their pre-match rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

When running the line at the home of The Reds I always used to make sure I had completed all of my pre-match routine that little bit earlier than normal so I could take time to listen to it. For me there is no finer club and anthem than that sung by the Anfield faithful.

A true ‘hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck’ moment.

GT at 2015-03-08 16:39:54

As for our referees today, Andre Marriner takes charge of a quartet which includes Lee Betts and Mick McDonough on his lines and Bobby Madley as the 4th official.

Last time out on YATR, Andre had a quiet and incident-free game at Arsenal (v Everton) during another weekend when his colleagues were creating much controversy.

The 44 year-old midlands referee will be hoping for more of the same today. He is without the quality of assistants he had at The Emirates though, so we all hope that Betts and McDonough are strong in their approach to teamwork today.

This is a hot topic at the moment as on far too many occasions this season we have seen assistants lacking in support for their colleagues (see the article on our website http://you-are-the-ref.com/there-is-no-i-in-team-by-glenn-turner/ ).

Refereeing teams for the final can come out of these quarter-final ties, but having already been in the middle for that particular honour Andre will know the furthest he can go this season is a semi-final tie at Wembley.

It’s a great occasion, cup quarter-final weekend, and we all hope that our team today has everyone talking positively about refereeing.

GT at 2015-03-08 16:27:23

Hi everyone and welcome to another live Refcam commentary on today’s FA Cup quarter-final tie Liverpool v Blackburn Rovers.

This season’s FA Cup is there for the taking, and with so many of the ‘big-boys’ having already exited the competition, both of today’s teams will fancy their chances of making it to Wembley for the semi-finals and beyond.

Bookies’ favourites to lift the trophy, Liverpool, are the form side in the Premier League. Unbeaten in 12 and with so many of their world class players back in contention for a place in the starting eleven, boss Brendan Rogers has an embarrassment of riches from which to choose.

The young manager will be delighted with the return and form of Daniel Sturridge, whilst Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho are both in incredible form for The Reds.

However, standing in their way in the quest for silverware is a very good Blackburn Rovers side.

Manager Gary Bowyer has turned around the fortunes of the 1995 Premier League champions, who sit in 10th spot in the Championship nicely positioned for a charge towards the promotion and play-off places as the season draws to a close. Having already knocked out Premier League Swansea City and Stoke City, the Ewood Park outfit will have no fear at Anfield.

Striker Jordan Rhodes is a handful for every defence he comes up against, and with top scorer Rudy Gestede (15 goals for the season) alongside him the Rovers’ forward line is well equipped to see another of the fancied top sides take a tumble out of the competition.

So sit back and enjoy our YATR commentary on this one. It promises to be a cracker of a match.
