Full time summary –

Anthony Taylor has refereed this opening Community Shield match in an effective manner how has this been achieved?

He has displayed overall a very good management of players and reading and judgement of the game.

He displayed a good knowledge of the laws of the game and also what he could and could not do within the laws. 2 yellow cards one for each team came at the right time for him as the tempo picked up and these cards brought back down the game to his control. His game management and consistency was there for all to see and was as per my blog.

Fitness, movement and close proximity were also a trademark of ATs performance and in my opinion he has set the bar at a high level as we look forward to the start of the FA Premier League Season. It will be interesting to view our next referee performances to see if they can get anywhere near and match this one.

Both Assistants gave good support overall and in their key area of offside both judgement and their intervention was correct in terms of when to and when not to flag.

4th Official Roger East was low key which was what was required but fully effective as there was no need for any intervention as both Technical Area occupants display a good behaviour attribute.

Full TimeAnthony Taylor blows his whistle to signal the end of The FA Community Shield and this will give Arsenal a positive start to the new season. An entertaining game with plenty of goal mouth action. Arsenal winners 1-0

AM at 2015-08-02 16:50:36

Arsenal nearly get a second goal from a good non offside flag from GB

AM at 2015-08-02 16:48:45

Free kick to Arsenal following a foul by Cahill good management of free kick by AT using spray

AM at 2015-08-02 16:47:42

Free kick to Arsenal

4 minutes of added time are shown by RE

AM at 2015-08-02 16:46:26

Untidy moment as players and then AT goes flying in to calm matters with players – just need to be careful in these hotly contested moment that you do not put your own safety into question by a sudden attempt to separate players. All settled down fairly quickly and no cards shown.

AM at 2015-08-02 16:43:34

Again a good pace and movement from AT as play breaks to both ends of the field of play

AM at 2015-08-02 16:42:22

Arsenal ck again optimum position taken up by AT KEEP AN EYE ON THIS AREA

AM at 2015-08-02 16:41:02

Gibbs careless has just come on as sub needs to be careful

AM at 2015-08-02 16:40:16

Chelsea sub 11 off 3 on

Arsenal sub 26 off 20 on

AM at 2015-08-02 16:39:36

Free kick to Chelsea following a foul in front of JB who signals but there does not appear to be any further action against 18 of Arsenal which is a surprise and I can only think that JB did not think it to be a yellow card which I did.

AM at 2015-08-02 16:33:29

Arsenal sub 15 off 8 on

AM at 2015-08-02 16:32:59

As we enter the final 15 minutes really important that the match officials now bring this game home to a safe conclusion

AM at 2015-08-02 16:31:15

Again from a Chelsea cross good in field position from AT – VIEWING INTO THE PENALTY AREA

Good arm / hand signals for throw in seen from AT

AM at 2015-08-02 16:26:29

Yellow Card34 Arsenal reckless challenge again timely and correct as AT adds cards to aid his management of this game.

Ivanovic stands in front of Cech at free kick not a problem here just an added tactic.

28 off 5 on Chelsea sub

AM at 2015-08-02 16:23:43

Yellow Card28 CHELSEA PULLS BACK OXLADE – CHAMBERLAIN -good approach taken by AT yellow card not flashed at 28 of Chelsea – AT takes his time and also has a word with the player, like the approach well done AT

AM at 2015-08-02 16:21:05

Chelsea not offside correct by JB

No penalty kick to Chelsea correct given from a close position achieved by AT

AM at 2015-08-02 16:19:47

During The Youdan tournament which completed last week we saw ex top flight referee Roger Dilkes co-ordinate all assessment / coach appointments and reports from each game. If you want to find out more about this role and the tournament then take a look at:

for more information and summary of the tournament.

AM at 2015-08-02 16:15:24

Chelsea offside correct judgement from JB

AM at 2015-08-02 16:14:38

So far today we have seen players from both teams show a good respect towards each other, long may this continue, coupled with good management by AT

AM at 2015-08-02 16:11:39

JB – Chelsea offside correct as the player makes an obvious action to play the ball.

Chelsea sub 7 off 8 on – 6 subs each team today.

AM at 2015-08-02 16:09:34

Chelsea sub coming up

AM at 2015-08-02 16:07:43

A number of tight throw in decisions not given by JB. Remember that the whole of the ball has to pass out of play and fully over the touchline before being awarded by the AR. Some people and players still think that 90% out of play is enough well it is not!

AM at 2015-08-02 16:04:45

AT again close to play to judge no free kick, doesn’t the close proximity add value to your decision making process?

During the final of The YOUDAN TROPHY we witnessed a very good refereeing display from Stephen Wallace from Northern Ireland certainly a referee to keep an eye on for the future and one whom I am sure we will see progress. Well done Stephen and thanks for your tweet.

Chelsea SUB 18 off 9 on

2nd half underway…

AM at 2015-08-02 15:59:19

Half time:

AT has remained in a fair and firm control of this game today how has he done this?

well he has achieved match control after the opening early minutes which I blogged were a strong test for AT he upped his tolerance level and after 5 minutes or so really got a grip on this fixture. This was achieved by his close proximity to play, excellent fitness levels and achievement of credible viewing angles through clever reading play / player movement and anticipation of play. He has always remained close to play and players will accept a decision if the referee is right there rather than trying to give decisions from distance with lacks credibility . High fitness levels is key for any referee particularly at this level and or any level. Keep an eye out for this during the season.

AR.1 GB has after an early hasty offside flag which AT correctly allowed play to continue has been correct in all his offside decisions, good support seen here.

AR.2 JB has so far done all required of him in a low key first half which I am sure will be more testing in the 2nd half as Chelsea chase the game.

Half Time0-1

At the half way stage an overall summary to follow..

AM at 2015-08-02 15:46:25

Ivanovic 2 not awarded a free kick correctly and he looks to go down with no challenge at all. A word from AT to him. Then free kick to Chelsea. 1 minute added time shown by RE

AM at 2015-08-02 15:44:03

Remy offside again correct award by GB again look at GBs position which is correctly in line with 2nd rearmost A. defender

AM at 2015-08-02 15:42:55

Foul awarded following a foul by Monreal on Ivanovic in the Chelsea penalty area. First view here looked correct and safety first in these situations

AM at 2015-08-02 15:41:27

Ball just out of play for a throw in to C. Good to whistle in these tight situations so as to stop play quickly and avoid any confusion

AM at 2015-08-02 15:38:30

Corner kick to Arsenal – AT retains a good view to detect any grappling that may occur

AM at 2015-08-02 15:37:20

Remy remains just onside and plays the ball to Ramires who heads over the bar – good decision from GB no offside, given from the correct position

AM at 2015-08-02 15:33:16

Again, the sunlight and shaded areas of the field of play will also create added focus and concentration for our referee

AM at 2015-08-02 15:31:13

AT has just shown an excellent sprint and change of pace in an Arsenal breakaway

AM at 2015-08-02 15:29:18

For both Assistants the shade / sunlight will create added concentration for offside view / focus

AM at 2015-08-02 15:27:23

Remy offside again signal correct from GB

AM at 2015-08-02 15:26:35

The goal will certainly open up play and it will be interesting to see  the Chelsea response

24AM at 2015-08-02 15:25:04

GOAL!Oxlade-Chamberlain to make it 0-1

AM at 2015-08-02 15:24:13

Chelsea offside from GB – NO PENALTY KICK TO ARSENAL – not given by AT from a close and credible position, well done AT

AM at 2015-08-02 15:23:01

Ramirez careless on Arsenal Player free kick to Arsenal. Ivanovic then commits a foul on Carzorla

AM at 2015-08-02 15:21:27

AT stops play as Cahill has a blood injury to his face. Chelsea physio is on to attend to the player. Also treatment to Ozil. Roger East 4th Official ensures players remain off the field until signal received from AT

15AM at 2015-08-02 15:18:19

After a feisty start AT has really kept a tight rein on matters by the award of free kicks without allowing any advantage to threaten his match control

AM at 2015-08-02 15:16:02

Remy offside correct good position taken up by GB in line with 2nd rearmost defender

14AM at 2015-08-02 15:14:47

Good infield movement and position from GB who shows a good sprint to get to the goal line ck for Chelsea

AM at 2015-08-02 15:12:39

From a good corner kick position taken up by AT he has picked up a foul by Cahill and awards an Arsenal free kick

10AM at 2015-08-02 15:11:01

4 Arsenal on 4 Chelsea in the Arsenal penalty area key decision no penalty kick awarded to Chelsea which on viewing replays looks a correct decision. One may be for you to comment upon?

A few challenges quickly come in and the ball then hits AT. Free kick to Chelsea awarded.

AM at 2015-08-02 15:07:16

7 Ramires has committed a late challenge on 19 Arsenal – no free kick awarded by AT. This maybe an area to keep an eye on today

AM at 2015-08-02 15:05:04

AR Gary Beswick (GB) is on the Technical Area touchline and John Brooks (JB) is on the near touch line

2AM at 2015-08-02 15:03:20

An early flag for offside from GB is rightly acknowledged by AT and play continues.

AM at 2015-08-02 15:01:46

Early attack from Arsenal sees an early sprint and movement from AT

Pre MatchAM at 2015-08-02 15:00:12

As the players change ends and kick off towards opposite support. The Referee Anthony Taylor blows his whistle for the kick off

Pre MatchAM at 2015-08-02 14:56:28

The pre match handshakes are taking place with the match officials taking their position in the centre of both teams and are rightly the 3rd team. God save the Queen is now being sung and it is good to see players and fans singing alike on a sunny afternoon at Wembley

AM at 2015-08-02 14:52:45

Did you know Wenger has never beaten Mourinho in 13 games!
