Swansea v Tottenham

FINAL SCORE: 0 – 2

at 2018-01-02 22:56:36

SUMMARY:   The very wet conditions made life difficult for players and for the Referee. The early yellow card allowed the Referee to assert authority and overall he made sensible allowance for the conditions. However, the failure by Assistant Mark Perry to detect an easy offside offence  allowed the first  goal to be scored which had a bearing on the game. The pressure was already on Bobby Madley to judge challenges and what effect the conditions were having, if any, on them without being let down by his Assistant with a major decision. (Key Match Incident). This put the Referee firmly in the spotlight as he was the one who awarded the goal. but he compounded this in not dismissing Sanchez for what was a clear second cautionable offence later in the game. It appears Referees are reluctant to dismiss players at this level for second cautions but the Laws of the Game should always be applied correctly.  Once again we are having to focus on poor practice in decision making by both Referee and Assistant and this is why our Premier League officials are no longer the best in the World. Very disappointing. Thanks for joining me tonight. Don’t forget Arsenal v Chelsea tomorrow. Good night.

Full Time

Corner kick for Swansea in added time.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:32:55

The Referee was ideally positioned to judge the challenge on Son and decided not to award a penalty kick.   GOAL! by Ali makes it 0-2

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:29:13

Careless foul by Ali. Correctly penalised.   Corner kick to Spurs. Dier offside and correct flag from AR Child but sensible advantage applied by the Referee.  Corner kick for Swansea.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:22:44

Bobby Madley never seems to be putting in too much effort but to be fair to him he never seems too far away from play. Swansea substitution Routledge for Carroll. Van Der Hoom fouls Ali. Yellow Cardfor Van Der Hoom.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:19:50

Don’t know why the Referee is giving an advantage signal when no offence was committed.   Foul on Ali. Free-kick to Spurs.  Corner kick to Spurs. Good to see no grappling/holding.  Substitution for Spurs Sissoko for Lamela.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:14:49

Another offside offence not detected by Mark Perry. Fortunately this time a goal does not result as the ball hits the post.   Swansea substitution McBurney for Dyer.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:10:57

Foul on Son. Free-kick to Spurs.

Substitution for Spurs. Kane for LLorente.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:08:08

Good free-kick for Spurs well saved. Foul by Sanches on Lamela leads to a Spurs corner kick. Foul by Lamela on Dyer. Yellow Cardfor Lamela.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:08:06

Good free-kick for Spurs well saved. Foul by Sanches on Lamela leads to a Spurs corner kick. Foul by Lamela on Dyer. Yellow Cardfor Lamela.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:04:31

Spurs substitution Wanyama for Sanchez. Not surprising. BobbyMadley surely couldn’t have continued to use verbal warnings with Sanchez if he’d been kept on.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 22:01:08

Sanchez tackles Olssen carelessly. The Referee has a strong word with the Spurs player.  I wonder if stonger action would have been taken against the Spurs player had he not already have been cautioned earlier. I think so.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 21:57:02

Another advantage applied by the Referee to keep the game flowing as much as possible.   Corner kick for Spurs leads to nothing. One good thing…. there doesn’t seem to be too much grappling in these situations.  Swansea substitution Narsingh for Rangel.

Away we go.  The rain seems to have eased a little so maybe the pitch wont get any worse.

Quite a competitive first half with the conditions playing a part in what is happening. The heavy rain is making the pitch very very wet and this in turn  poses problems not only for players but also for the Referee. At times the ball is slowing up on the wet grass, at other times it is shooting through and players are sliding into challenges. All of this puts extra pressure on the Referee who has to determine if challenges are caused by the state of the pitch or by a deliberate action. The two cautions were judged correctly in my opinion. Mark Perry made a bad judgement in not indicating Lorente being offside when the ball was played in from the free-kick. This then throws the spotlight unjustly on the Referee. Very poor co-operation from the Assistant, letting the Referee down and hence a “big” decision was wrong. At any level such offside offences SHOULD be detected. Hopefully things will improve for the second half. Just time for a quick cuppa then I’ll be back.

Half Time

Corner kick to Swansea.  1 Added minute.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 21:26:57

Careless challenge on Ali penalised. Free-kick to Spurs as the rain appears to ease somewhat.  Clucas commits careless challenge. Free-kick to Spurs. Once again though Spurs players offside at the free-kick and no flag signal given by AR1.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 21:21:06

Silly foul by Dier. Free-kick to Swansea.    Hand ball offence well spotted by the Referee. Free-kick to Spurs.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 21:17:19

Advantage applied following a minor careless challenge.  A good detection of the “off the ball” offence committed by Sanchez. Free-kick for Swansea and Yellow Cardfor the Spurs player.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 21:11:23

The torrential rain is not helping things. At the moment the ball is moving reasonably ok but unless the rain relents maybe the Referee will have to judge if conditions are bad enough to abandon the game. Player safety is paramount.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 21:07:39

Careless challenge by Lorente correctly penalised.   Good flag signal by AR1 to indicate offside offence by Lorente. Pity the “big” decision earlier wasn’t detected by the AR.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 20:58:44

Illegal challenge by Olssen on Trippier  leads to Yellow Cardfor Olssen and free-kick to Spurs. Another careless challenge follows from Carroll and the first goal of the evening by Lorente.GOAL! 0-1 but Lorente moved from an offside position to head the ball hence the goal should not have been allowed.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 20:51:16

Clearly slippery, wet  underfoot conditions. The Referee will need to ensure players don’t use this as an excuse to commit offences while taking the conditions into account.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 20:47:03

Lorente fouls Sanches. First free-kick of the game  easy to give.

S.M. at 2018-01-02 20:45:19

Swansea get the game underway.

Good evening and welcome to tonights RefCam game which is Swansea City v Tottenham Hotspur.  The home team are desperate for a win to move off the bottom of the league table while Spurs can move above great rivals Arsenal if they bag the three points.  The match will be controlled by BobbyMadley who will be assisted by M.Perry and S.Child while Lee Probert will act as 4th Official.   Join me for what should be an interesting contest with kick-off being in around half an hour at 19.45.
