#SAFCMUFC A major development need for the referees in the select group is in the recognition of challenges.  I outlined prior to the match a couple of incidents that had happened to SG1 and SG2 referees over the weekend where red card challenges went unnoticed.  Today, in my opinion a red card was incorrectly issued.  The judgement of challenges and what is and what is not a red card has been very inconsistent this season and has led to confusion.

DM at 2017-04-09 15:32:46

The second half proved largely a non-event as Manchester United scored an early second half-goal and dominated possession, running out 3-0 winners.  The match officials had to adopt a high profile for a lot of this game as there 34 fouls and the referee attempted to assert his authority by slowing the game down, especially in the early stages of the first half and for the first 30 minutes of the second half.  The Assistant Referees did a sound job and judged offside very well.  Mike Jones supported the referee well as he managed the technical areas and produced a can of vanishing spray after 7 minutes which the referee had forgotten to take out with him.

The key match incident of the game occurred in the 42nd minute when Larsson was dismissed for a challenge on Herrera.  In my opinion, as outlined at half-time, there were two errors in this incident in my opinion:

  1. The referee could and should have penalised Larsson immediately prior to the incident for a foul on Pogba
  2. The foul that led to the sending off was in my opinion a reckless challenge and worthy of a caution, as it was not a challenge that endangered the safety of the opponent

Craig Pawson appeared to lack confidence and his body language was hesitant at times.  He also lacks a dynamic sprint and his movement is rather one-paced.

This was a game that was difficult to shine in as it was stop/start and full of niggles and challenges.  Craig is undoubtedly a referee with a lot of potential but in order to fully deliver he has to work hard on his body language and movement, so that his recognition of challenges improves.

Yellow CardSunderland 17 for a reckless challenge.

DM at 2017-04-09 15:12:25

The caution of Martial appeared to be as a result of Pickford kicking the ball and then making contact with Martial’s leg.  Hard to pick up in full speed but an incorrect caution in my opinion.

DM at 2017-04-09 15:11:27

Yellow CardMUFC 11 Martial for unsporting behaviour

DM at 2017-04-09 15:10:31

I was just about to comment that Fellaini was on the verge of persistently infringing the Laws of the Game and that the referee should publicly reprimand him.  However, that approach was not required as Fellaini kicked the ball away and was correctly cautioned.

DM at 2017-04-09 15:08:57

Yellow CardMUFC 27 Fellaini cautioned for delaying restart of play.

Man Utd Sub 22 off, 11 on

DM at 2017-04-09 15:00:12

Excellent offside flag by AR Hussin as Ibrahimovic interferes with an opponent

DM at 2017-04-09 14:59:20

As Manchester United Counter from their own half, the referee is left quite a way behind play.  The lack of a dynamic sprint was evident there.

Sunderland Sub 6 off, 9 on

#SAFCMUFC I have mentioned body language a couple of times today and the perception is that this is a referee who is lacking confidence.  From the outset he was hesitant and he is choosing to use his whistle a lot to manage situations where perhaps his voice would be more effective.

DM at 2017-04-09 14:42:40

Craig Pawson has to manage the tempo of this game and slow it down if needed.  Sunderland are intensely frustrated and the crowd are disagreeing with every decision the referee makes.  The referee has to maintain focus and authority and remain fully in control with strong body language.

DM at 2017-04-09 14:39:37

Collision between Pickford and Ibrahimovic correctly judged as a foul to Sunderland.

#SAFCMUFC Interestingly looking at the sending off, Craig Pawson changes which pocket he has pulled the card out of.  I wonder if he has had some communication from a colleague?

DM at 2017-04-09 14:26:22

Half-time summary

Craig had a fairly uneventful half up until the sending off in the 42nd minute, for what he judged to be serious foul play.  I have some sympathy for the referee as he has obviously penalised the follow-through from Larsson and Herrera’s reaction didn’t help.  However, I do think that the referee has made two errors in judging this key-match incident:

  1. The referee could and should have penalised Larsson immediately prior to the incident for a foul on Pogba
  2. The foul that led to the sending off was in my opinion a reckless challenge and worthy of a caution, as it was not a challenged that endangered the safety of the opponent.

It will be very important now that the referee remains fully focused at half-time and that he does not reflect too much on the incident now, as it will otherwise be playing on his mind.  Sunderland will feel aggrieved so the referee will need to use all of his man-management tools to ensure that the game does not boil over.

I think Larsson should have been penalised immediately before the sending off when he carelessly challenged Pogba.

DM at 2017-04-09 14:16:56

Interesting that I mentioned serious foul play before the match and how there had been incidents that had gone unnoticed over the weekend.  In my opinion, the referee Craig Pawson has got this one wrong.  The challenge was reckless, Larsson did lunge for the ball but it was not a challenge in my opinion that was out of control or one that endangered the safety of the opponent.

DM at 2017-04-09 14:13:33

Red CardSAFC 7 Larsson dismissed for serious foul play

DM at 2017-04-09 14:11:54

Larsson made to re-place the ball so that it is on the corner quadrant line.  The non-active Assistant R West will have alerted the referee to the fact that the ball was not correctly positioned.

DM at 2017-04-09 14:08:30

Sunderland SUB – 3 off, 21 on

DM at 2017-04-09 14:03:28

Craig Pawson has managed to judge incidents correctly so far, adopting a rather one-paced approach.  He is a fit referee but lacks a dynamic sprint, something that will come in very useful should a team counter and the referee is called to make a decision on a fast break.

DM at 2017-04-09 14:00:23

GOAL!  MUFC 9 Ibrahimovic scores

DM at 2017-04-09 13:59:27

Excellent offside decision by AR Hussin, a marginal decision but a correct one.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:58:48

Craig Pawson has had a good start to the match and has asserted his control by correctly penalising the careless challenges early on and cautioning Shaw for a reckless challenge in the 14th minute.  He will need to stay focused as the tempo of the match goes up.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:53:31

AR West correctly does nothing as Pogba throws himself to the ground.  The challenge was fair and the officials did the right thing in playing on.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:50:10

The referee penalises Rojo for a silly foul on the edge of the penalty area.  As there was contact, the free-kick is correctly awarded as a Direct one.  The referee was correct not to play advantage in that area in my opinion as the ceremonial free-kick was the better option.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:48:00

Despite the Sunderland protests Rodwell was correctly penalised for a foul on Herrera.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:46:08

Correct first caution of the match for a reckless challenge by Shaw, it was from distance, at speed and the player paid little regard to the safety of the Sunderland player.  Ticked all the boxes for a yellow card.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:44:58

Yellow CardMUFC 23 Shaw

DM at 2017-04-09 13:44:31

First corner-kick of the game, Craig adopts a good starting position but remains static.  He will need to be on his toes at set pieces.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:43:02

#SAFCMUFC The referee has had quite a high profile in this opening 10 minutes but his approach has been fairly sensible as he is letting the players know what is and is not acceptable, asserting his authority before taking any risks.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:41:28

Mike Jones hands the vanishing spray to Craig Pawson who obviously forgot to bring it out with him.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:38:55

Again Larsson correctly penalised for a foul.  He vents his frustration at the referee who turns a blind eye.  In these early stages I think a more stronger approach and a firm word would be advisable so that this type of protest is dealt with.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:36:46

Following the foul by Cattermole Craig Pawson prevented Manchester United taking a free-kick.  This was correct as the ball was not correctly positioned.  The referee is dictating the tempo during these early stages, once he has control he will perhaps allow it to flow a little more.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:33:50

Early free-kick given for a careless challenge by Ovideo.  Good to see the referee have a quiet word as well.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:32:13

Body language is such an important attribute for a referee.  It is early on but Craig has given two throw-ins early on and his hand signals have been hesitant and weak.  He will need to be stronger in order to instill confidence and display his authority.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:30:14

Craig Pawson gets the match underway

DM at 2017-04-09 13:21:44

During the weekend there has been some less than satisfactory recognition of challenges.  Simon Hooper and Stuart Attwell have both failed to spot clear examples of serious foul play on the EFL Championship Live sky games.  Craig and his team will need to be alert to the possibility of such challenges as they will not want to repeat the mistakes made by their colleagues.  A number of players on the field today such as Rojo and Cattermole have it in them to go over the top when it comes to challenges.

DM at 2017-04-09 13:16:28

Craig Pawson has refereed 29 matches this season to date, issuing 117 cautions and sending off 4 players.  Craig is a bright prospect and is ‘in the middle of the pack’ so to speak in terms of the Select Group pecking order.  He has a great opportunity over the next couple of years to establish himself as one of the top referees in the group.  Two experienced Assistants in Ian Hussin and Richard West will be working with Craig today and Mike Jones is tasked with keeping Mr Mourinho and Mr Moyes under control.
