Don’t forget to tune into our new feature – The Ref Show – this week in which Alan Biggs, Keith Hackett and Roger Dilkes discussed the opening games of the Premier League season.

How often have we heard “that was an easy game for the referee”. I strongly disagree, that was an object lesson on how to make the game look easy. No fuss, no bother, 2 well time cautions, congratulations to the refereeing team from the team here at ‘You Are the Ref”.
RC at 2014-08-24 17:46:40
Commendable stamina and movement by the referee, moving well through the centre circle as play develops
RC at 2014-08-24 17:41:16
Do we sense that both teams are happy with a point ………………
RC at 2014-08-24 17:39:43
Now is the time to be wary of the ‘sting in the tail, the late goal or key match incident which changes the outcome …..
RC at 2014-08-24 17:37:50
10 minutes to go, the refereeing team will be encouraging each other with the comms equipment …..
RC at 2014-08-24 17:31:00
spray time again – it’s really working well ……..
RC at 2014-08-24 17:30:30
When you are next refereeing, if you can find a caution per team at key stages of the game, it won’t do you any harm at all …..
RC at 2014-08-24 17:28:25
20 minutes to go, the 2 cautions have done the trick, the match remains under total control …..
RC at 2014-08-24 17:24:29
another correct decision, Cleverly can have no complaints
RC at 2014-08-24 17:22:42
A possible sign on Manchester United’s intent to win the game perhaps …….
RC at 2014-08-24 17:20:35
So the introduction of Wellback, such a good impact player, is another possible ‘trigger point’ which keeps the match officials on their toes ……
RC at 2014-08-24 17:20:07
Excellent, excellent, simulation by Ashley Young …..
RC at 2014-08-24 17:16:52
Key that the match officials keep focused, especially in this stalemate of a game. Look how an incorrect throw-in decision in our earlier game at lunchtime caused major issues ….
RC at 2014-08-24 17:14:27
The balance of not cautioning is just about right, but one more Cattermole type challenge and matters could change …..
RC at 2014-08-24 17:12:44
Would you have cautioned Catermole for that challenge on Mata ? Does Atkinson need to caution to retain control ????
RC at 2014-08-24 17:08:42
Did you notice the referee’s position there, beautifully positioned in the penalty area as the shot cam in …
RC at 2014-08-24 17:07:24
It’s a “techy” start to the 2nd half, 3 penal offences in the space of 3 minutes …. stay focused guys and watch for the persistent infringers ….
RC at 2014-08-24 17:05:39
Quality offside decision making by Steve Child – clear signal – no fuss – great stuff ….
RC at 2014-08-24 17:00:45
As always, the first 10-15 minute of the second half of any game is vital to the referee. I don’t care if you are refereeing AC Milan v Barcelona or Dog and Duck v Queen Vic, it’s the time to reassert your authority … Lose it now, and you’ve lost it for the reminder of the game …..
RC at 2014-08-24 16:56:58
So , no yellow cards so far, here at you-are-the-ref we think that’s about right – what do you think …… Let us know what you think – contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com.
RC at 2014-08-24 16:54:38
The Assistant’s now need to change their focus as they are going from ‘3 at the back’ to ‘4 at the back’ and visa-versa ………….
RC at 2014-08-24 16:50:33
The game itself has lost some ‘shape’, which can make reading and anticipation by the referee difficult, although I cannot recall one incident where Martin Atkinson was out of position.
RC at 2014-08-24 16:47:31
A commendable first half display by the match officials, just one piece of indecision by Assistant Child, apart from that, text book stuff !!!
RC at 2014-08-24 16:42:03
Would you consider Fletcher’s overhead kick to be dangerous play ???
RC at 2014-08-24 16:36:19
Do you think the referee would be looking to impose his authority in the final stages of the first-half with an appropriately timed caution ? Not that he should go looking for one, but if the opportunity presents itself ………..
RC at 2014-08-24 16:34:22
RC at 2014-08-24 16:33:49
Look at the referee”s position – ideal or too close ????
RC at 2014-08-24 16:32:27
delay – think – signal …. well done harry Lennard
RC at 2014-08-24 16:31:23
Here’s our second ‘trigger point’ of the game – refocus required by the refereeing team, lots of talking across the comms equipment required ….
RC at 2014-08-24 16:30:15
Nothing more than Sunderland deserve 1-1 …..
RC at 2014-08-24 16:26:08
text-book signal from AR Lennard following a penal offence by van Persie
RC at 2014-08-24 16:23:15
Half-way through – so far so good for the refereeing team, but I sense an increase in the intensity as the first half progresses from this point – remain focused Gents …….
RC at 2014-08-24 16:21:47
Good pro-active intervention by the referee, preventing misconduct by the players following the award of a free-kick …………
RC at 2014-08-24 16:20:49
… in that order ………………
RC at 2014-08-24 16:20:26
A slight error from Assistant Child who appeared to give a corner and the changed his mind, an object lesson in “delay, think, signal …..”
RC at 2014-08-24 16:18:21
Goals can often be “trigger points” in terms of an increased temperature of the game, time for the officials to be wary …
RC at 2014-08-24 16:16:56
Now that changes things …………….. 0-1 against the run of play ,,,,,
RC at 2014-08-24 16:15:07
. especially with the WWF wrestling that takes place ….
RC at 2014-08-24 16:14:13
I do have a concern here that whilst the referee is using the spray close to the Assistant, who is monitoring the majority of the players in the penalty area …..
RC at 2014-08-24 16:12:50
100% penal offence decision by the officials …….
RC at 2014-08-24 16:11:30
Excellent delay by the referee before awarding the free-kick, no advantage had accrued
RC at 2014-08-24 16:10:01
Sunderland’s positive attitude is probably winning the midfield battle at the moment, could this be a case of mind over Mata !!!!
RC at 2014-08-24 16:07:01
Text-book movement by Assistant Lennard in that build-up to the Manchester United attack …..
RC at 2014-08-24 16:05:11
RC at 2014-08-24 16:04:43
With the retirement of Howard Webb, Martin is arguably the most experienced and out #1 referee in England – do you agree ……
RC at 2014-08-24 16:03:24
Once again Martin’s Atkinson’s languid and economical style of movement will be in evidence, watch how he always well placed without ‘appearing’ to be working hard ….
RC at 2014-08-24 16:00:19
Here we go ….
RC at 2014-08-24 15:59:25
Mmmmmmm – 3 at the back for the Away team – does this affect the ‘game plan’ for the Assistant Referees ….
RC at 2014-08-24 15:55:55
Welcome to the Stadium of Light. Many of the team here at You-Are-The-Ref have personal experience of officiating at this wonderful stadium where the crowd noise makes you tingle as you lead the teams out …….. the music also helps to make the place buzz …… it’s amazingly loud in that tunnel …..
RC at 2014-08-24 15:53:04
10 minutes to kick-off, last minute preparations for the refereeing team – important that they work with the host broadcaster in terms of controlling the kickoff time ……………
RC at 2014-08-24 15:48:32
The match officials for this afternoon’s game are led by Martin Atkinson, who has such a credible game on last Sunday’s YATR game when he took charge of Newcastle v Manchester City. He is again assisted by Steve Child, and this week is joined by Harry Lennard and the experienced Phil Dowd as 4th official
RC at 2014-08-24 15:45:29
RC at 2014-08-24 15:44:13
Also interested to see goal-line technology successfully come to the fore and to assist the refereeing team to make the correct decision on the Stoke goal. Do you think we should be using technology elsewhere in our beautiful game ?
RC at 2014-08-24 15:42:36
Did you see our coverage of the Hull City v Stoke City game – isn’t it amazing how one throw-in decision can affect the outcome …….
RC at 2014-08-24 15:41:31
Welcome to our coverage of Sunderland v Manchester United ….
