Full Time

In my opinion, Martin Atkinson and his team have had an excellent game:

  • This was an object lesson commendable, low-profile refereeing. His involvement in the game was minimal, keeping a ‘watching brief’ on proceedings with accurate decision making and good positioning and movement.

  • The one caution in the game was well timed and fully justified, after which the players were well disciplined.

  • An honorable mention to Adrian Holmes who showed his experience with a ‘text-book’ display of commendable Assistant Refereeing, including a correct key-match decision in indicating offside against Defoe in the 83rd minute – leading to the goal being correctly disallowed.

  • There are not many times in a game at this level where I have no development points for the match officials, but this was the case today – well done to the Refereeing team.

The Black Cats continue to press, but if there is to be another goal, I can only see it going to the Away Team

83

AH at 2017-03-05 18:42:29

The ball hits the back of the net via Defoe's head, but Adrian Holmes once again makes a high quality decision to indicate offside and the 'goal' is correctly disallowed.

77

AH at 2017-03-05 18:36:50

City have had almost 70% of the possession - tells the whole story really .......

75

AH at 2017-03-05 18:34:46

#safccity Hope this is not the commentator's curse, but look how relaxed and in control Martin Atkinson is as the game moves into the final 15 minutes.

70

AH at 2017-03-05 18:29:29

20 minutes to go and it really has become a case of men verses boys as City are now totally dominant, it would not surprise me to see more goals go in.

63

AH at 2017-03-05 18:22:23

This is a key 10 minutes or so for the refereeing team, in a sense the game is over as City continue to dominate, it's vital that officials keep their focus for the next phases of play.

60

AH at 2017-03-05 18:19:45

GOAL! Leroy Sane swoops to double the Away Team lead - classical Man City - another great team goal.

55

AH at 2017-03-05 18:17:06

Oviedo challenges Sterling and Steve Childs correctly indicates an offence.  No yellow card issued, this to me is commendable game management as (a) Oviedo's challenge was not reckless and (b) the 'temperature' of the game did not require a card to be issued. Well done once again to the refereeing team

54

AH at 2017-03-05 18:12:33

#safccity Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork - well done to the team in black ..... Adrian Holmes indicates offside, Martin Atkinson plays a good advantage and Steve Childs makes a close, but correct, non-offside call.

It's very quiet on twitter this afternoon ladies and gents, perhaps you are all 'twittered-out' after the Man Utd v Bournemouth game yesterday, but please keep you contributions coming to us here @youaretheref

Adrian Holmes starts the second half as he ended the first with a quality offside call.

Here we go for the second-half, let's hope it goes as well as the first ......

Half Time

Half Time

As City enjoy their half-time lead, hats off to the refereeing team for a commendable first 45 minutes. The key moment was Martin Atkinson's decision to caution John O'Shea, well timed for many reasons, and an honourable mention to Adrian Holmes for the quality of his offside judgements.

44

AH at 2017-03-05 17:47:47

Another quality decision by Adrian Holmes as Silva is correctly judged offside - important he got that one right as City were bearing down on goal ...

43

AH at 2017-03-05 17:45:02

GOAL! Aguero is the 'fox in the box' and gets on the end of a Sterling cross to open the scoring, classy stuff from City and a major blow to the Black Cats just before half-time

39

AH at 2017-03-05 17:41:36

Januazaj is fouled and the referee does well to delay the award of a free-kick, waiting to see if an advantage accrued.

33

AH at 2017-03-05 17:37:13

An excellent call by Adi Holmes as Sterling is correctly judged to be offside, The referee has a quiet word for Sterling's post-decision petulance, good man-management to stay low profile at this stage.

31

AH at 2017-03-05 17:34:36

Yellow CardThe Sunderland centre-half, O'Shea, becomes the first name in the referee's book for his cynical pull on Aguero's shirt - a very well timed caution in my view, Martin Atkinson asserting his authority at just the right time.

27

AH at 2017-03-05 17:31:15

Toure is tumbled in midfield and Martin Atkinson shows the value of being well-placed, and therefore able to sell his decision, correctly awarding a free-kick from no more than 10 metres away.

25

AH at 2017-03-05 17:26:25

I cannot believe we only have 20 minutes left in the first-half, that has simply flown past ......

22

AH at 2017-03-05 17:23:34

Did you notice the referee's positioning as Mane drives into the penalty area, a great lesson for up and coming referees

19

AH at 2017-03-05 17:21:01

Defoe, against the run of play, strikes the upright and the score remains 0-0, just!

17

AH at 2017-03-05 17:18:23

#safcvcity  Football or chess ? Fascinating to watch - assisted so far by solid low-profile officiating.

12

AH at 2017-03-05 17:14:12

#safcvcity  Smart refereeing by Martin Atkinson as he informs Larsson, in no uncertain terms, that his next offence will result in a caution - good proactive officiating.

9

AH at 2017-03-05 17:10:30

Both teams are pressing the ball carrier and the game has not yet settled, this will be a good test of Martin Atkinson's stamina levels in this carries on .........

4

AH at 2017-03-05 17:06:07

This has been a fast and furious start to the game, just shows the importance of the match to both teams, I am sure Martin and his team are aware of this and will be keeping a tight reign on proceedings in the early stages

1

AH at 2017-03-05 17:01:34

May the ball run kindly for you, Mr. Atkinson .....

The Stadium of Light is a great arena, I know from my own experience that officiating here makes you tingle as you come out of the tunnel, and today’s game will be passionate, with both clubs needing points for quite different reasons.

#safcvcity  How the PGMO needed that display, following on from some inept refereeing performances on Saturday, which have been well documented elsewhere.  Here’s hoping from an equally solid performance from the experienced Leeds based referee this afternoon.
