Stay with us here on YATR as we have yet more live commentary on Refcam.
Tomorrow sees another fascinating clash as Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town entertain Newcastle United, followed by Tottenham Hotspur’s Wembley league debut at home to Champions Chelsea.
Then it’s Monday night action for big-spending Manchester City against Everton.
If you still crave more football take a visit to the YATR website which will provide more than enough outstanding content.
There is a really engaging piece from Tim Vickery on one of the refereeing world’s first media celebrities, Arthur Ellis.
Whilst the YATR ACADEMY is such a unique, exciting and valuable resource for everyone with an interest in refereeing that it is a ‘must have’ if you want to develop your understanding and knowledge of officiating whilst having access to some quality coaching.
Jason Pettigrove continues his fantastic ‘Runners and Riders’ feature, the ever-popular Refshow is always a winner and, of course, Keith Hackett keeps his unique brand of knowledge and understanding of all things refereeing available for you to access.
Not forgetting your chance to become a part of a Guinness World Record attempt as part of the refereeing team to take charge of a match played at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
All of this, and much more, shows why YATR followers know this is the place for all referees to improve their knowledge, understanding and performance.
Keep it here on

All three match officials had good games.

Andre refereed what is a tough game very sensibly, keeping his cards in his pocket and using his man management skills instead.

Simon Beck was the busier of the two assistants and got his big call correct…Lacazette’s foot was around 2 to 3 inches offside before he received the ball and tucked it away!

If I have one point I can make….can all assistant referees please tighten up on foul throws. We are seeing too many go unpunished already this season.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:25:31

Having failed to beat any of the top six sides last season, Stoke open up their home account with a win against Champions League hopefuls ArsenaL

The Gunners will undoubtedly complain about a penalty kick not given and a very tight offside call, but the latter was definitely correct from Simon Beck.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:23:34

That’s the end of the game from the Bet365 Stadium, and it is a big win for Stoke by a goal to nil.

Full Time

GT at 2017-08-19 19:21:20

Good call by Scott Ledger as Berahinio strays offside

GT at 2017-08-19 19:18:34

Stoke make a change with Indi coming on as we enter 5 minutes of additional time.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:16:45

Giroud uses his back to knock Butland off balance.

Foul for Stoke.

Good call.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:15:48

We are almost at the end of the regular 90 minutes.

Can Arsenal get back into this one, or is it Stoke’s first win of the season?

GT at 2017-08-19 19:14:27

Pieters stays down following a challenge, but Andre says ‘no foul’ and play continues.

The expected drama show from Mark Hughes follows as he jumps up and down, throwing his arms around.

Some referees would have called a foul, others would have not.

It is certainly not clear enough to warrant anything like the kind of stupidity we saw from Hughes.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:11:20

Going back to the raised foot at the throw-in which was missed by Scott Ledger.

YATR followers will know this is a theme we have picked up already this season…another of our Coaches (Guy Beale) gave mention to it last week.

It may seem trivial…but when a goal follows one just wait for the trouble to follow!

A little concentration is all that is required.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:08:11

Good call, Andre.

Foul by Giroud on Zouma.

Free kick is the correct decision.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:06:36

Alex Iwobi and Theo Walcott come into the game for Arsenal as they chase that valuable equaliser.

Lacazette and Xhaka make way for them.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:05:54

Stoke are so good at this…closing down a game when defending a small lead.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:02:36

Lacazette finds the net but Simon Beck raises his flag for offside.

There are tight calls, then there are incredibly tight calls…and that one falls into the latter category.

We are talking literally an inch or so…but strictly speaking, in Law, it was offside.

GT at 2017-08-19 19:00:12

That looked suspiciously like a foul throw-in right in front of Scott Ledger for a foot raised, but nothing given.

70 minutes

GT at 2017-08-19 18:58:55

Stoke make their first change as the goal scorer Jese makes way for Sobhi Ramadan

GT at 2017-08-19 18:57:59

20 minutes to go.

Can Stoke hold on to all 3 points or will Arsenal repeat last week’s great escape?

Arsenal make the first change of the game a Olivier Giroud enters the action for Kolasinac

GT at 2017-08-19 18:49:10

An hour has gone of this one and the game is certainly opening up.

It feels like only a matter of time before Arsenal get the equaliser…

GT at 2017-08-19 18:47:48

Excellent offside call by Scott Ledger…very close, but correct from a top assistant

GT at 2017-08-19 18:44:38

Arsenal make another penalty claim – this one for handball.

Absolutely, never a penalty kick in a month if Sundays!

Well done, Andre, for waving away the appeals.

GT at 2017-08-19 18:43:13

Excellent challenge in the penalty area by Zouma…corner kick correctly awarded to Arsenal

GT at 2017-08-19 18:40:54

Andre’s reading of the good, old fashioned, shoulder charge is excellent.

Danny Welbeck is the latest player to benefit from a referee who is confident enough to allow such challenges to take place.

Well done, referee

GT at 2017-08-19 18:39:10

Andre is sticking to his game plan in terms of positioning, staying ahead of play wherever possible to compensate for a lack of a sprint..

So far, so good…it is working for him.

GT at 2017-08-19 18:35:32

GOAL! Jese scores on his debut for Stoke.

That is the start to the second half we all wanted…GAME ON

GT at 2017-08-19 18:32:55

Here we go for the second half.

Will we get an early goal to kick start this one into life?

Stoke City get us going again…

GT at 2017-08-19 18:28:31

There is, of course, an answer to the Bellerin penalty claim, but the Premier League is dragging its feet on the issue.

VAR would have cleared that one up in seconds.

We are only in the second weekend of the new season and, already, we have seen so many incidents where VAR would have helped officials reach the correct decision.

Why is the Premier League not on  board with this yet?

GT at 2017-08-19 18:21:59

Not the greatest game ever as neither team had that quality in the final third of the field of play to find the goal the game is crying out for.

A good half from Andre and his assistants though…some may look to criticise over the Bellerin penalty/no penalty call but that would be very harsh.

It looked like no penalty all day long…only after several replays and many camera angles could the slightest of contact be seen, so it remains a good call for me.

No referee would have given that one in open play.

GT at 2017-08-19 18:17:57

That’s the end of the opening period…goal less at Stoke

Half Time

GT at 2017-08-19 18:17:07

Good team work as Simon Beck raises his flag for offside against Stoke but Andre allows play to continue because Petr Cech takes the ball cleanly for Arsenal

GT at 2017-08-19 18:15:26

2 additional minutes to go on…

GT at 2017-08-19 18:13:27

Two minutes of the regular 45 to go…

GT at 2017-08-19 18:11:09

Stoke break quickly, and Andre is left behind a little.

Nonetheless, he gets to the penalty area before Stoke cross the ball.

I hope his lack of pace doesn’t cost him as the match goes on later.

GT at 2017-08-19 18:07:32

Suddenly the heavens open at the Bet365 Stadium.

Rain is pouring down which will make the ball zip around off the surface.

Andre will need to take that into account when judging fouls.

GT at 2017-08-19 18:05:34

Simon Beck is right on his game today, spotting another tight one as the ball swerves out and then back into play.

Goal kick to Arsenal – good call.

GT at 2017-08-19 18:04:07

Stalemate at the Bet365 Stadium.

But will it stay this way?

How are the officials doing?

GT at 2017-08-19 18:02:34

More good work by Assistant Simon Beck as he spots a tight throw in from distance

GT at 2017-08-19 18:01:04

30 minutes in and it is so far, so good for our team of officials.

A very tight call earlier as Arsenal asked for a penalty following a challenge on Bellerin, but it was not ‘giveable’ for a referee.

Andre was in the position he could be expected to be.

GT at 2017-08-19 17:57:41

Despite his lack of a sprint, Andre still finds the positioning…and is right on the spot to correctly award a free kick to Arsenal following a small foul

GT at 2017-08-19 17:56:32

Berahino really needs to find the net soon…he has gone 27 games without a League goal for Stoke.

In fact the last time he scored in the League was back in February 2016 (v Crystal Palace)

24 minutes

GT at 2017-08-19 17:54:50

Problems for Stoke as their star man, Shaqiri, has to leave play with a hamstring injury.

Berahinio takes over.

GT at 2017-08-19 17:52:06

Andre and his colleagues will be very pleased with how these opening 20 minutes have gone.

GT at 2017-08-19 17:50:31

Bellerin goes down in the penalty area, but Andre correctly awards nothing more than a corner kick to Arsenal

GT at 2017-08-19 17:49:42

Zouma takes down Welbeck as the Arsenal man moves forwards with the ball.

The Stoke man will not get away with too many of those today before seeing yellow from Andre

GT at 2017-08-19 17:48:38

Excellent spot by Andre for handball by Shaqiri.

Free kick to Arsenal

GT at 2017-08-19 17:47:51

Diouf uses his shoulder to ease Ramsey out of the way as the Arsenal man attempts to cross the ball.

Nothing wrong with a shoulder challenge

GT at 2017-08-19 17:46:38

Simon Beck is offering every support he can to Andre, he has already taken the lead on a couple of fouls – good lining.

GT at 2017-08-19 17:45:46

Take note of Andre’s positioning…

He knows he doesn’t have the dynamic sprinting ability he used to hold, so he has adjusted his refereeing accordingly.

He spends more time forwards of the ball than when he was a younger referee, now anticipating the next phase of play

GT at 2017-08-19 17:42:35

It’s the game we expected so far with neither side yet taking control…we know this would be a difficult one to predict.

All good for our officials in these opening minutes.

Andre is taking a sensible approach to the small fouls being committed.

GT at 2017-08-19 17:40:38

Apologies for the short loss in communication folks…gremlins in the connection.

All sorted now…

GT at 2017-08-19 17:32:22

Andre is, sensibly, staying around the centre circle as the ball moves end-to-end. The game needs to settle down into a pattern

GT at 2017-08-19 17:30:17

Arsenal take the kick-off and get us underway…

GT at 2017-08-19 17:27:10

It’s almost time for kick-off at The Bet365 Stadium.

GT at 2017-08-19 17:21:33

As for our officials…

The experienced Andre Marriner is our man-in-the-middle for this one.

Andre is a man for whom I have had the pleasure to run the line and is always supportive of his colleagues, so a team ethos should not be a problem for assistants Simon Beck and Scott Ledger, the latter of whom must wonder what he has to do to gain that much-deserved FIFA recognition.

Once again Scott was one of the best assistants last season yet lesser experienced and able colleagues continue to receive the reward his performances deserve. One must wonder whether his path to international recognition is being blocked?

Fourth official today is one of the PGMOL’s favoured-sons, Bobby Madley, who will be back in action on Monday for another game you can follow here on Refcam, Manchester City v Everton.

If there is almost one guarantee today, it will be that either (or both) manager(s) will have something to say about the officials as neither is a stranger to such comment when this fixture takes place.

This one will be far-from-easy for Andre and his team, and we can expect a few fireworks along the way.

We all wish Andre every success in bringing it to a successful, and controversy-fee, conclusion.

GT at 2017-08-19 17:19:56

Hi everyone, and welcome to the second of today’s live Refcam commentary games today.

Following the earlier game between Swansea City and Man United we now bring for you coverage of Stoke City v Arsenal.

This is one of those intriguing games of the season, as no one really fancies a trip away to Stoke City while Arsenal have found this a tough place to visit over the years.

Nonetheless the Gunners arrive on the back of an opening day victory (just!) against Leicester City whereas their hosts suffered a loss in their season’s opener away at Everton.

Prior to the visitors’ 1-4 win last season, Stoke had enjoyed a six match unbeaten run in this fixture, and manager Mark Hughes will be hopeful that some of his new signings will see the Potters get back to winning ways.

Barely a week passes by without Arsene Wenger’s future as Arsenal supremo being the subject of speculation yet the Frenchman takes it all in his stride and brings a side which he could see win its first two opening Premier League games in a season for eight years.

This is a tough one to call either way, but do let us know who you believe will be triumphant and what you think of the officials by contacting us on Twitter @youaretheref
