Geiger books place in next round as we say adios to Spain

at 2014-06-18 20:56:10

Well done to the Referee and his team – probably the most complete refereeing performance of the World Cop so far.  I cannot remember one decision which was obviously wrong and his use of the cautions was first class.  Calm, collected, athletic and in charge.

at 2014-06-18 20:55:22

A quality last decision by the referee ….

at 2014-06-18 20:51:16

Let us know where you think the 6 minutes has been calculated from ?

at 2014-06-18 20:50:02

6 minutes – interesting …….

at 2014-06-18 20:47:20

Keeping the standards with appropriate and well timed sanction ….. well done

at 2014-06-18 20:45:04

More subtle impressive man-management, encouraging the Chile player to leave the field of play quickly ….

at 2014-06-18 20:41:47

Now is the time for ‘safety-first’ refereeing.  No risky advantages, keep it tight ….. “kill the game”

at 2014-06-18 20:38:55

10 minutes to go, game not yet over, keep focussed ……

at 2014-06-18 20:37:00

‘Safe’ Assistant Refereeing – goalkeeper likely to be challenged, so flag is raised for offside … good stuff

at 2014-06-18 20:35:34

15 minutes to go – time consuming or time wasting – Chile will take every opportunity to delay ….

at 2014-06-18 20:34:15

Penal Offence against Chile 11 – should the Assistant have been more pro-active ?

at 2014-06-18 20:32:34

No let up in the referee’s movement and positioning – very impressive …..

at 2014-06-18 20:30:29

20 to go – If Spain don’t score soon, their frustrations will increase – how will the referee manage them ?

at 2014-06-18 20:28:34

Chilean miss – turning point ?

at 2014-06-18 20:25:43

65th minute – referees insistence that the throw-in is taken from the correct position – manage the small events, the big ones will follow

at 2014-06-18 20:23:38

Substitutions, often the ‘trigger-points’ for an increase in temperature. Let’s see if Spain 9 and Chile 16 make a difference

at 2014-06-18 20:20:44

Once again a well-timed caution – just keeping a lid on proceedings

at 2014-06-18 20:19:54

Notice the referee’s economy of movement as attacking play slowly develops ..

at 2014-06-18 20:16:55

The refereeing team will be talking down the communication equipment, encouraging each other, keep focussed ….

at 2014-06-18 20:14:42

Have you noticed the English Premier League style of movement and signalling by the Assistant Referees ?

at 2014-06-18 20:11:07

It will be interesting to see how the referee deals with the inevitable time-consuming / time-wasting tactics of Chile ? Let’s see what he does !

at 2014-06-18 20:09:05

Good pro-active refereeing, taking the opportunity in a ‘no-risk’ situation to assert authority

at 2014-06-18 20:06:28

As referee’s, do we look for changes in patterns of play, or do we just referee the game as 11 verses 11 ? Let us know what you think – contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

at 2014-06-18 20:04:24

A key first 15 minutes of the second half for the refereeing team – Spain will come out fired up and it’s important that the standards are maintained.  Perhaps a couple of early cautions would be appropriate ?  Let’s see what happens.

at 2014-06-18 20:02:41

Spain are 45 minutes from elimination – can you believe it !!!!

at 2014-06-18 19:57:46

If you were refereeing this game, what instructions would you be giving to your colleagues during the half-time interval ?

at 2014-06-18 19:56:10

Our match officials this evening operate on the MLS.  Nelson Rodriquez and our own Keith Hackett were involved in the proposal and planning of the introduction of a group of Professional Referees to operate on the MLS. Peter Walton has assisted in the USA in the training and development of the PRO referees, as has Paul Rejer, the man credited by raising the standards of our current crop of Premier League Assistant referees.

at 2014-06-18 19:53:34

Getting technical for a minute … Given the injury to the England Physio where he stepped on a bottle and broke his ankle. The water bottles spaced out on the edge of the technical area are a risk Players running off the field could step on them accidentally.

at 2014-06-18 19:51:39

Here’s a headline – Ball radioactive for Spain as Geiger provides perfect counter to any tension

at 2014-06-18 19:50:19

Here’s hoping they can maintain this excellent standard for the second-half.

at 2014-06-18 19:49:41

The icing on the cake was the delayed award of the Chilean free-kick which led to the 42nd minute goal ….

at 2014-06-18 19:48:47

Half-time. Overall match control spot-on by the referee, supported by some impressive Assistant Refereeing.  The cautions came at the right time and have aided match-control. Very little, if anything, to concern us………..

at 2014-06-18 19:48:12

Penal offence against the goal-keeper, correct again …..

at 2014-06-18 19:44:42

… which led to a vital, vital goal … great contribution by the referee in the lead up to the goal …

at 2014-06-18 19:43:28

Followed up by a very good delayed penal offence decision

at 2014-06-18 19:42:55

Sometimes opportunities arise during the match to assert authority.  The referee has just taken that opportunity.

at 2014-06-18 19:41:12

Well timed and correct caution issues to Xavi

at 2014-06-18 19:38:09

10 minute to keep it tight and maintain the focus ……

at 2014-06-18 19:36:24

And equally important, so do the other 21 players !!

at 2014-06-18 19:36:00

Good man-management, Pedro is aware he is getting close to formal sanction, and he knows it ….

at 2014-06-18 19:32:00

Ideal positional play – again !!!

at 2014-06-18 19:31:17

Decisive and confident decision making ….. good refereeing

at 2014-06-18 19:30:03

Did you notice how the near-side Assistant took his time to award the throw-in direction – good stuff

at 2014-06-18 19:28:25

This is the key period for the officials, the temperature of the game is likely to increase

at 2014-06-18 19:27:12

What’s your opinion about Pedro clapping and the Chilean caution ?

at 2014-06-18 19:26:02

Great body language and arm movement to quell any possible dissent by the Chile players ….

at 2014-06-18 19:24:40

A quarter of the game gone, so far, so good. What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

at 2014-06-18 19:20:46

Refereeing is about ‘tempo-management’ of the game – is that goal a ‘trigger-point’ for a change in temperature? Important that the referee keeps a tight rein on proceedings for the next five minutes or so.

at 2014-06-18 19:19:58

Well that makes life interesting ….

at 2014-06-18 19:18:32

If the game continues at this pace, this will be a great test in the final stages for the referee’s stamina levels !

at 2014-06-18 19:16:08

Great offside decision – did you notice how the goalkeeper was in advance of the ball and therefore that changed the dynamic of the 2nd rear most defender

at 2014-06-18 19:13:35

Look at the sideways ‘crabbing’ movement of the Assistants – text book movement

at 2014-06-18 19:10:57

Good solid start by Mark Geiger. He is one of the PRO referees who operates on the MLS under the management of Peter Walton, former English Premier League Referee.

at 2014-06-18 19:10:30

First 10 minutes successfully completed …

at 2014-06-18 19:05:51

Great decision, no offence at the half-way line ….

at 2014-06-18 19:03:54

Fast and furious start to the game, key the refereeing team are switched on, which they seem to be !!!

at 2014-06-18 19:02:16

Good start Mr. Referee …..

at 2014-06-18 19:01:57

Goo decisive signal for a corner-kick – and well placed to give the decision …

Both captain’s are goal-keepers …. unusual perhaps ?

at 2014-06-18 18:57:50

Are you watching Mr. Rooney and Co. ….

at 2014-06-18 18:57:01

And the fans to  !!!!!!!

at 2014-06-18 18:56:42

Cracking Chilean National Anthem – every player singing like they mean it

at 2014-06-18 18:55:04

Our referee this evening is American Mark Geiger.  This is his second match in the tournament, having refereed Columbia v Greece last Saturday, a match which went really well for him and his team.  The same team are on duty this evening.

at 2014-06-18 18:53:34

Welcome to the world famous Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro for Match 19 of the World Cup, Spain v Chile.

at 2014-06-18 18:52:50

How will Spain react following the 5-1 hammering by the Dutch? A Chilean victory this evening means that Spain will join Australia in being eliminated after only 2 games, who would have thought that possible for the much fancied Spanish.

at 2014-06-18 18:51:58

This is the classic Europe v Central America clash, will the referee keep a tight hold on early proceedings to gain match control?

at 2014-06-18 18:50:27

Ok, back to this evening’s game …….

at 2014-06-18 18:48:25

On the flip-side of decision making, a great non-flag for the 2nd Netherlands goal, graphics on the replay show that Van Persie was onside, world class Assistant Refereeing by the near side official.

at 2014-06-18 18:45:48

From a refereeing point of view, what’s your thoughts on the penalty awarded for the second Australian goal? Intent ?  Did the “offending” player have his arms in an ‘expected’ position?  You-Are-The-Ref are of the opinion that this decision was incorrect.

at 2014-06-18 18:44:25

RCT at 2014-06-18 18:43:42

Did you see the Netherlands  v Australia game earlier ? What a strike by Tim Cahill !
