Thanks for your company. We said it all about Mr Hooper with his major errors during the second half but with Southend winning the criticism of the unawarded penalty will be negated. Is Simon Hooper good enough for the Premier League? This and other issues will be debated on The Ref Show after the weekend! Tune in to this week’s edition of The Ref Show for more debate by our experts. What are your views? We value your comments throughout this evening via email and Twitter, so keep them coming. Let us have your views on Twitter @youaretheref or email to info@you-are-the-ref. Looking forward to my ‘overtime’ bonus cheque with this game going down to the wire. It is my last game for You Are The Ref – enjoy the rest of the playoffs starting tomorrow and following on with the championship on Monday. It’s goodnight from me and thanks for you company.

Wycombe scored

TS at 2015-05-23 20:18:47

both score their first penalty

TS at 2015-05-23 20:17:23

Goalkeepers will become heroes or villians! Great Beach Boys song! The pressure is now off the officials unless there is a massive breach of Law in the shootout. The Southend keeper Bentley was harshly awarded the own goal – can he redeem himself? Phil Brown generously shakes hands with the officials as the tension begins. Southend begin as the kicks are at the Wycombe end.

TS at 2015-05-23 20:13:07

A deserved equaliser for Southend and it goes to the penalty shootout. Southend Fans who left the stadium are now running back!

Full TimePenalty Shoot Out

TS at 2015-05-23 20:10:25

Southend score! GOAL!Pigott is the saviour!

TS at 2015-05-23 20:08:53

Time allowed of just 2 minutes shown by the 4th Official. Really not long enough!

TS at 2015-05-23 20:06:24

Good close position by Simon Hooper to award a throw to Southend. Freekick Wycombe in a defensive position as they absorbe more time. Phil Brown makes the point.

TS at 2015-05-23 20:03:59

Great advantage played but Wycombe can’t score.

TS at 2015-05-23 20:02:08

Backing in not given? Southend furious with the referee but a caution issued to Wood ofnWycombe for time wasting Yellow CardLeonard booked as well for Southend for his diYellow Cardssent.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:59:51

A long throw causes problems but the keeper collects as Wycombe wind down the clock with a cramp injury. Tactical injury in all probability as the keeper kicked the ball out. Murphy on for Wycombe as the 4th Official has trouble with the manager’s reaction to the time wasting. We saw it coming!

TS at 2015-05-23 19:55:45

Simulation by the corner flag did not fool the referee – good decision.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:52:28

Southend to kick off in the final 15 minutes of their season unless they can score! The whistle goes and we are under way.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:50:48

2 minutes time allowed at the end of the first half. Stupid foul by Coker under Billy Smallwood’s nose gives a freekick. Half time in extra time Wycombe lead 1 – 0.Half Time

TS at 2015-05-23 19:47:22

The ball in the corner to run down the clock but Southend get it away. Concentration by all three teams is vital now as the managers encourage their teams to give their all. Will the officials respond? We hope so but the damage to their credibility was done with 2 missed cautions and a failure to award Southend a clear penalty during the second half. A clash of heads causes another stoppage with 13 minutes played in the first half of extra time. The Wycombe goal has harshly been awarded as a Bently ‘own goal’! Come on guys!!

TS at 2015-05-23 19:41:59

The referee will have to be aware of time wasting tactics now as Wycombe will try and absorbe time to defend their lead.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:40:06

Southendbsub Worrall off – Payne on. Phil Brown throws the dice for the last time to try and get an equaliser.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:38:49

There are tired bodies out there now. Suicide advantage played on half way to Wycombe but Southend won the ball. Freekick now to Wycombe in a good position. Spray time and 9.15 as Wycombe score from the freekick. GOAL!

TS at 2015-05-23 19:35:10

Header over by Wycombe with the first chance in extra time. Freekick not appreciated by Manager Ainsworth’s as Southend press but an easy catch for the keeper.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:33:05

Extra Time

The players have the short break and we enter 15 minutes each way followed by penalty kicks if the scores are still level. Southend will feel unlucky not to have had a penalty and Phil Brown will have his say. Wycombe kick off.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:28:25

White of Southend fouls with minimal contact but Billy Smallwood flags for a  Freekick – another injury kills the game as a high foot and a low head collide.  Full time whistle goes as we enter Extra Time – nil – nil still.Full Time

TS at 2015-05-23 19:25:30

Benn is up and leaves the field with a drop ball restart on the half way line.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:24:26

3 minutes time allowed shown – as a long throw results in a disputed corner to Southend. Injury gives the players a water break and the referee should be taking that opportunity too.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:21:35

Mawson fouls – no different to the other reckless challenges but this time the card is shown – correctly! Yellow Card

TS at 2015-05-23 19:20:05

Crowd of almost 40000 announced as Wycombe get a corner. The keeper makes a great save to deny Wycombe. Another corner headed away as Southend break. Foul given – free kick Wycombe.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:17:18

Sub Wycombe – Ephraim off and Craig on with 5 minutes of normal time left.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:15:43

Sub for Wycombe pending – as foul throw awarded against Pierre. Freekick Southend wide on the left results in a corner. Good defending but Southend continue to press and the shot on goal easily saved. 84 minutes gone.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:11:03

Freekick to Wycombe on halfway as the referee kills the game saying “no advantage”. Sub pending for Southend. Atkinson off and Weston on on 79 minutes.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:08:52

Last 15 minutes and still no goals as the game goes end-to-end to test the fitness levels of all three teams.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:06:29

After a good first half, the wheels have come off the officials performance. Two cautions missed, a clear penalty not given and suddenly the pressure is on them. A ball to hand in the area as Wycombe press is not given as the focus develops on the referee.

TS at 2015-05-23 19:03:04

A clear push in the back by a defender should have resulted in a penalty! How wS that not given? The referee had a good angle but was perhaps not deep or wide enough to. Big decision wrong! The Assistant Billy Smallwood was also in a good proximity and should have helped out with a positive call and signal. Not good teamwork!

TS at 2015-05-23 18:58:48

65 minutes gone and the heavy Wembley legs will start to kick in as the turf drags the energy from the body. I remember my FA Trophy Final and the need for extra concentration, running the extra yards and fighting off the heavy feeling. It is vital that the referee stays on the pace in the closing 25 minutes.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:56:06

Good header by Corr,  well saved as Southend look to open the scoring.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:53:38

Corner Wycombe – grappling goes unpunished and the header goes wide by Mawson. Goal kick.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:50:51

Sub Southend on the way as they change to 4-4-2. Will the officials respond? McLaughlin off and Pigott on after 59 minutes.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:47:56

Reckless challenge by Southend punished only with a freekick. That was a caution all daylong! 53 minutes gone. Another reckless challenge gives Wycombe a freekick but no caution! You cannot manage a reckless challenge and Law needs to be applied. That could be the turning point in control of this game as another ‘block’ gives Southend a free kick. It results in a goal kick! Not a good few minutes for Simon Hooper!

TS at 2015-05-23 18:43:44

Two heavy challenges flew in but no fouls given – Southend have started the brighter but the first goal is all important. Could go either way!

TS at 2015-05-23 18:40:26

Good judgement by referee Hooper as the Southend attacker runs into the defender expecting a free kick. Nothing given – rightly.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:38:37

Early corner to Wycombe and Pierre has not removed his white undershorts! Poor vigilance by the team of officials!

TS at 2015-05-23 18:36:41

Tune in to this week’s edition of The Ref Show for more news, views and analysis by our experts on the game. The ‘H’ bombs – Hackett, Halsey and Hirst give their opinions under the watchful eye of Alan Biggs.

Southend kick off. Second half under way. What changes will the managers have made to their tactical formations? Adjustments to the referee’s positioning might be necessary as he watches to see what changes have been made by the managers. Remember that the tactical formations of the teams (4-4-2, 4-3-3 or even 5-3-2-1) have different positional requirements for the referee to get the best viewing angles without being in the way of play. Referee Hooper I think needs a more dynamic sprint through the midfield area to ensure he gets better viewing angles in the final third. He might have avoided the goal kick award when a corner was not given had his position been wider and deeper. Something for him to think about.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:21:49

Half time and still no goals. The officials have remained in control and the two cautions were deserved. Two disallowed goals also correct as the kettle boils for half time tea – Yorkshire tea of course. Half Time

TS at 2015-05-23 18:19:41

Wycombe 6 – Pierre is wearing white under garments beneath his navy shorts in a clear breach of the Laws of the Game. It will be interesting to see if he is allowed to get away with it after the break. 3 minutes time allowed.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:12:37

Scrappy play again with referee Hooper trying to  get his communication skills going. I have never watched him referee before but my first impressions are of a referee who has arbitrated the game well, but who lacks in that essential ‘sparkle’ that defines those destined for greater things. He has obviously had a good season to be appointed to this game but is he the quality to join the Select Group. Your views are welcomed!

TS at 2015-05-23 18:08:25

34 minutes gone and another free kick to Wycombe in the centre circle but  a foul in the penalty area gives Southend a defensive restart.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:05:25

9.15 with the spray can but the ball goes behind for a goal kick.

TS at 2015-05-23 18:04:12

An off the ball block was undetected by the Wycombe defender before a heavy reckless challenge by Bolger earns him a caution. Good composure by referee Hooper as he delays the card whilst the injury is assessed. Yellow Card

TS at 2015-05-23 18:01:24

Another midfield free kick to Wycombe in a good position but a goal kick awarded when it should have been a corner! First inaccurate decision of the game by the referee.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:58:50

Phil Brown questioning the referee but as Wycombe get the ball in the net a great offside by Billy Smallwood keeps the score at nil, nil. Both disallowed goal were correct decisions as we have played 25 minutes.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:56:13

Another freekick as the game enters a scrappy phase with 20 minutes gone. First caution of the  afternoon goes to Hayes of Wycombe as Referee Hooper defines his tolerance level. The ball is in the net but disallowed for a clear push by the attacker. Yellow Card

TS at 2015-05-23 17:53:19

A push well spotted and the freekick wasted by Sourhend.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:52:29

Free kick Wycombe on halfway to retain the balance of control. A good referee will ensure the balance remains as even as possible.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:51:09

Interesting that Billy Smallwood was named AR 2 and Jon Hunt was AR 1. But Billy is dugout side! The offside decision was by Hunt earlier!

TS at 2015-05-23 17:49:13

15 minutes gone and no real challenge to the referee’s authority as Southend get a free kick in midfield and win a 4th corner but the header goes wide. Good Southend pressure.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:46:47

Corner to Southend. Referee Hooper proactive before it is taken. Another corner results followed by a third! Grappling evident but the header goes through to the keeper so no whistle.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:44:01

Offside given by Billy Smallwood as a Southend attacker comes back from deep to win the ball.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:42:40

Second free kick on 9 minute given to Southend. To balance the foul count.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:41:24

Advantage played in a wide position when a free kick might have been more desirable for Southend. The cross came to nothing.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:39:35

First 5 minutes – all Wycombe as Southend try and get a foothold in the game.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:36:52

Sub Matt Boomfield (10) on for Saunders as Wycombe reorganise.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:35:45

First foul in a couple of seconds! Free kick Wycombe which might be an indication of the physical nature of the game. Injury to Saunders and he looks in some discomfort. Sub requested.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:32:41

The whistle blows and we’re underway. Simon Hooper should have done his homework on both teams in an attempt to be in total control. He’ll be aware of where his problems might arise and let’s hope that he will be able to get into the best viewing positions to judge incidents. Let us know your thoughts through the usual channel. Wycombe in their traditional navy and light blue quarters, Southend in all yellow – kick off to Wycombe.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:22:56

The teams are in the tunnel ready to enter the arena for today’s game as the Assistants carry out the equipment check in readiness for the contest.

Simon Hooper has been appointed as the referee for this season’s Sky Bet League 2 Play-Off Final between Southend United and Wycombe Wanderers. Hooper will be assisted on Saturday 23rd May at Wembley Stadium by Jonathan Hunt and Billy Smallwood.

Graham Scott will be on fourth official duties for the Final, while Martin Coy has been named as the reserve assistant referee.

Having previously officiated in the Conference, Simon Hooper made his Football League debut in 2008 when he took charge of Exeter City versus Shrewsbury Town in League 2.

The Wiltshire-born referee has already witnessed a Sky Bet League 2 promotion this term, when he was the man in the middle on the final day of the season, as Bury defeated Tranmere Rovers to advance to the third tier of English football.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:17:21

Wycombe are nicknamed “The Chairboys” and recorded an emphatic 5-3 aggregate victory over Plymouth Argyle in their Play-Off semi-final, and only League 2 champions Burton Albion scored more in the division than Gareth Ainsworth’s men this season.

And the 42-year-old has insisted his side will continue with their forward-thinking style of play on Saturday, as they bid for a place in Sky Bet League 1 next term.

“We’re going to approach this game like the previous two games – with a consistent level of attacking football,” he said.

“League form has gone, it is a tournament we’ve entered into now, and this tournament is called the Play-Offs.

“We’re against a real big boy of our league, but we’ve upset more than one team this year and I don’t see why we can’t do it on Saturday.”

Ainsworth is keen to enjoy the occasion at the national stadium, despite the pressures that a Play-Off Final brings. He’s not only confident of his side’s chances this weekend, but the future of the club as a whole.

“It’s just brilliant to be here – the boys are riding the crest of a wave and seeing how far it’s going to take us,” he added.

“Everyone fancies their chances: we’re doing well at the moment, we’re confident and we’ve won three games in a row.

“We’ve had a good season, worked hard and deserve to be in the final at Wembley.

TS at 2015-05-23 17:08:39

Sorry for the ? Marks on the list of officials! Where did they come from.

Phil Brown, The Blues’ manager is expecting a tough test from Wycombe Wanderers, who won the first league meeting between the two teams in December before a 2-2 draw in March, but is backing his players to perform on the big stage.

“We played Wycombe Wanderers twice this season and they’re a decent side. They’ll be a formidable opposition on Saturday, that’s for sure,” Brown told the club’s official website.

“The scars of Stevenage and the 94th minute penalty missed made it exciting. It’s nice to be involved in situations like that as long as you come through the other side.

“Stevenage is gone now and we look forward to Saturday at Wembley. The stakes are high and may the best team win.”

A long season now comes down to one match for Southend and Wycombe – a straight shoot-out for promotion to Sky Bet League 1.

The Shrimpers and the Chairboys both finished on 84 points after 46 regular season games, before their semi-final successes over Stevenage and Plymouth Argyle respectively.

“Ninety per cent of the team has been selected over the 48 games this season. The consistency level has been first class. With the 49th game of the season, I know my best team,” Brown added.

Phil Brown played at Halifax Town when I, as a Football League referee, trained there and he was always first with banter to create great team spirit. When I refereed Blackpool against Bolton in the FA Cup at Bloomfield Road, (the first time the teams had met in the Cup since that historic 1953 Cup Final) Phil was the Wanderers’ right full back and gave me humorous ‘stick’ for the whole game! Working with Big Sam as assistant manager set him on the management road and I am delighted he’s doing well for Southend. Several of my Elvis book readers are associated with the Shrimpers and I wish them well for a great day out at Wembley.
