Tune in tomorrow for our 2 games Bournemouth V Arsenal and Chelsea V Manchester United.

This was not an easy game to referee due to the weather conditions which we have had heavy rain for the 90 minutes. Looking at Mark’s performance the attributes he showed to be a top class official. He wasn’t fussy but the important thing for a top referee is to be brave and not to be afraid to make the big decisions when you have to. When you look back on the game there were 3 key match decisions. First one penalty claim by WH when there was contact by S3 on WH11, yes there was contact but I feel that WH11 made contact with S3, my opinion correct decision. Key match decision 2, was S12 on WH27, where the S12 was dismissed for a reckless challenge in endangering the players safety with excessive force, he was out of control of his actions and was sent off for serious foul play. You can show that challenge from all different angles and some may say could it of been a yellow card but in my opinion once again I believe Mark has got the decision correct because he had no chance of winning that ball, and when you challenge like that you run the risk. Key match decision 3, absolutely spot on not to award a penalty to WH for deliberate handball. Distance from ball and pace not deliberate. Mark’s fitness, his reading of the game, his anticipation of play gets him into the positions to get the key match decisions correct. He was well assisted by his two assistants an excellent day at the office for all officials.

Hand ball appeal by WH, correct decision not to give a penalty. Not deliberate, ball to hand, distance from the ball and pace of the ball, strong refereeing by Mark.

Just watched a replay of the red card offence and interesting to see not one Southampton player complained.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:53:47
WH11 for reckless challenge.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:53:12
Going back to the sending off it was for serious foul play.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:50:39
Excellent positioning again by Mark look how wide he is to see any potential challenge.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:49:26
Interesting as I said in my pre-match Mark had sent Wanyama off the last time he refereed Southampton for 2 yellows.
Going back to the red card he had no control of his actions putting his opponent in danger.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:46:05
What Mark had to decide there was, was that challenge reckless or was it reckless endangering the players safety with excessive force? Obviously Mark felt the latter. The Southampton player does not help himself when he makes a challenge like that.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:42:51
Substitution for Southampton S10 OFF, S14 ON.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:40:30

S7 doesn’t like that decision, thinks he should of had the throw.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:38:40
Correct decision by Mark, holding offence by S3 on WH11.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:35:38
As I said in the first half Mark is not being over fussy with physical challenges.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:32:08
West Ham to get the second half underway.

Mark’s position, movement and dynamic sprinting is excellent which every referee at all levels can learn from, as it gives you the viewing angles to make the correct decisions. This is a challenging game for the referee as the wet weather is making it difficult to recognize penal offences. There was one shout of a possible penalty after there was contact by S3 on WH11, was the contact enough to make him go down? In my opinion it is not a penalty as I think that WH11 has made contact with S3. Excellent team work between assistant and referee.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:17:05
Southampton lead by 1 goal to 0.

MH at 2016-02-06 19:08:22
Was that the same as the WH penalty claim earlier on?
MH at 2016-02-06 19:07:28
S7 accidentally stood on by WH30.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:04:13
Conditions making it very difficult for the referee.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:03:42
Looking back at the replay it was S3 who made contact with WH11. Was there input from Simon Beck the assistant referee who had a perfect view on the potential penalty claim by WH?
MH at 2016-02-06 19:01:46
WH19 can have no complains with the holding offence.
MH at 2016-02-06 19:01:09

MH at 2016-02-06 18:53:19
Neil Swarbrick has travelled all the way down from Preston to be 4th official at Southampton tonight and he will travel along the South coast to be 4th official at Bournemouth tomorrow.
MH at 2016-02-06 18:49:39
Also pleasing to see Mark interacting with the players. It helps in controlling the game.

MH at 2016-02-06 18:43:13
As I said earlier Mark will have to let his tolerance levels high due to the weather conditions, It’s absolutely teaming down at St Mary’s.
MH at 2016-02-06 18:39:47
MH at 2016-02-06 18:38:49
Great save by WH goalkeeper from S2 header.

MH at 2016-02-06 18:37:23

MH at 2016-02-06 18:36:33
So important to pick up the small free kicks at this early stage. It builds the confidence in the players towards the referee in his decision making.
MH at 2016-02-06 18:34:52
Foul by S7 on WH20 well picked up by Mark.
MH at 2016-02-06 18:32:57
It looks very wet and windy down at St Mary’s, referee Mark Clattenburg will have to show a little bit of latitude to the players when making challenges.
MH at 2016-02-06 18:31:49
Good early free kick to Southampton.
MH at 2016-02-06 18:30:43

MH at 2016-02-06 18:25:43
Good evening and welcome to our ref cam viewers for this evenings encounter Southampton V West Ham United which should be a lively encounter, where Southampton will be looking for revenge when they lost 2-1 at West Ham in December.
Today’s referee is Mark Clattenburg, arguably the best referee in the Premier League at this present time. Mark comes into this game on the back of being away in Cyprus on a EUFA elite referee’s course in preparation for the knockout stage’s of the European competitions. Southampton will hope they can keep 11 players on the pitch today as the last time Mark refereed the Saints he sent off Wanyama, quite rightly so for 2 nailed on cautions in their 1-0 defeat at Norwich in January and it was very pleasing that Ronald Koeman to come out and apologize to Mark for his players behaviour. Mark has taken charge of 19 games showing 60 yellow cards at an average of 3.1 per game and 4 red cards. He will be assisted by Simon Beck who is on the technical side, Richard West on the far side and Neil Swarbrick will be his 4th official.
