Full time and I can only describe the referee’s performance as “solid”. Some may argue that Emre Can was unfortunate to receive a caution, but in the context of the game this did not affect his match control in any way. Martin’s control was never in doubt from minute 1 and he must be very pleased with his afternoon’s work.

#SOULIV Just 5 minutes remaining for the match officials to bring the game to a safe and successful conclusion
AH at 2018-02-11 19:07:47
#SOULIV At the risk of repeating myself, Martin Atkinson could not be better placed to detect Sane’s illegal push and to correctly award a free-kick to the Home Team
AH at 2018-02-11 19:05:04
#SOULIV – once again, good low-key refereeing as Martin Atkinson makes good use of the advantage clause to allow Liverpool to develop a promising attack.
AH at 2018-02-11 19:01:58
15 minutes to go and a goal from the Home Team gives us an interesting final period, a goal for the Away Team however, and it’s surely game, set and match – let’s see what unfolds ……
AH at 2018-02-11 19:01:35
Good stamina levels on show from the referee as Liverpool make a fast break …..
AH at 2018-02-11 18:57:05
#SOULIV Yet another fast offside flag, this time from Stuart Burt. He was correct, but what has happened to ‘wait and see’ ? The more I view this game, the more I think there must have been a directive from above to this effect ….. and I said at the start of the game that I wasn’t going to reference offside decisions !!
AH at 2018-02-11 18:53:44
Romeu is correctly cautioned for his reckless challenge – followed by sensible ‘common-sense’ refereeing, with the referee halting play to allow Romeu to get back into position, therefore not giving Liverpool as unfair advantage.
AH at 2018-02-11 18:49:58
#SOULIV 30 minutes to go and this is a key stage of the game for the refereeing team … a solid 15 minute period here and they will have the finishing line in sight …
AH at 2018-02-11 18:44:04
#SOULIV As the Home Team make a substitution, what’s your opinion on the game so far, let us know, contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com.
AH at 2018-02-11 18:42:03
#SOULIV Once again Martin Atkinson makes the correct call in awarding a goal-kick to Liverpool, significantly, once again, no complaints from the players. Even if Martin Atkinson decision to caution Emre Cab was incorrect, he won’t let that cloud his decision making for the rest of the game.
AH at 2018-02-11 18:36:06
Emre Can was unlucky on that occasion, I am not convinced that he committed an offence, but a yellow card is the referee’s decision, his first error of the game
AH at 2018-02-11 18:33:58
#SOULIV Here we go for the second 45, usually the more difficult of the 2 halves, let’s see what unfolds ….
AH at 2018-02-11 18:30:56
#SOULIV Continuing the “quicker flag” debate, the top level Assistant Referees met up last Tuesday, we are wondering if the directive came about then …
AH at 2018-02-11 18:24:11
Bit of a change this week for my recommended half-time read, please visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43010230 which covers Man City’s request for a meeting with the PGMO – I will be very interested to see where this one goes…..
AH at 2018-02-11 18:21:05
#LSOULIV So, an interesting debate developing here at You Are The Ref. Has last weekend’s controversy over Harry Kane’s offside led to an instruction from the PGMO for their Assistant Referee’s to raise the offside flag quickly. Our opinion says that this is the case, but what do you think. Please let us know by tweeting us here @youaretheref
AH at 2018-02-11 18:16:22
Half time at St Mary’s and this has been a typical low-key, high-quality performance by Martin Atkinson, no controversy to discuss – here’s to more of the same in the 2nd period.
AH at 2018-02-11 18:13:22
Firmino and Salah yet again combine as the latter slots home from close range
AH at 2018-02-11 18:11:58
Tadic gets the better of Matip and the latter becomes the recipient of the first yellow card of the game – this was the first opportunity the referee has had to assert his authority and he did so with minimum fuss – once again good refereeing
AH at 2018-02-11 18:08:07
#SOULIV Peter Kirkup uses his experience to make a solid offside call in a crowded penalty area
AH at 2018-02-11 18:04:17
#SOULIV It’s the correct (un-noticed) decisions that can make such a massive difference to how the referee manages the game. Here Martin Atkinson does well to ignore the spurious appeal by Mane and correctly awards a goal-kick to Southampton
AH at 2018-02-11 17:58:51
#SOULIV Firmino tumbles in the penalty area under the challenge from Stevens – no penalty is an accurate call in my opinion at the Liverpool makes the most of very minimal, if any, contact. Significantly there was no reaction from Firmino’s team mates, of from Klopp in the technical area.

Thanks to Simon Jackson @Jackson_S_D for his comment on twitter – keep them coming to us here @youaretheref
AH at 2018-02-11 17:52:30
#SOULIV Half-way through the first half and this has been a solid, low-key and effective refereeing performance by Martin Atkinson. His decision making has, so far, gone unnoticed, just the start he would have wanted.
AH at 2018-02-11 17:48:10
#SOULIV Salah commits a hand-ball offence, followed by a wry smile in the direction of Martin Atkinson, proof if it was needed that the decision was the correct one
AH at 2018-02-11 17:44:54
#SOULIV That was a good delayed offside flag by Peter Kirkup as Guido Carrillo is caught offside – but let’s not got into the debate about offside interpretation shall we!
AH at 2018-02-11 17:42:00
#SOULIV As the game unfolds, let us know your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com
AH at 2018-02-11 17:39:26
#SOULIV Did you notice the referee’s positioning then as he moved laterally across the field of play to ensure he was well placed to the judge the next incident – an excellent learning point for any up and coming referee.
AH at 2018-02-11 17:36:53
Poor defending allows Salah the time and space to set up Firmino and the Away Team have the lead
AH at 2018-02-11 17:33:26
#SOULIV one area of Martin Atkinson’s game to be aware of is the way he reads the game and anticipates play – he is invariably well placed to make the correct calls and uses his experience well.
AH at 2018-02-11 17:30:08
#SOULIV here we go – good luck in the Refereeing Team
AH at 2018-02-11 17:24:00
Martin Atkinson makes a swift return to RefCam, with his game last weekend being covered, Peter Kirkup and Stuart Burt provide the on the field support, Kevin Friend (once again) has the 4th official duties.

My colleagues here at You Are The Ref having provided some fascinating pre-match facts for today’s game – enjoy:
As one expensive former Saints defender returns for the first time, a former Liverpool defender welcomes the Reds to the South Coast as manager for the first time with the Saints in 15th and their visitors in third.
Before Mauricio Pelligrino’s arrival at St Marys, Virgil van Dyke was making headlines in stripes as Saints sneaked through a two-legged EFL Cup semi-final last season. In the corresponding Premier League encounter his shirt-pulling challenge on Roberto Firmino was just one hotly debated post-match topic.
This season’s reverse fixture at Anfield ended 3-0, while the last Premier League clash between the two here ended 0-0 in November, 2016, with Mark Clattenburg in charge. The very first in Hampshire, in February, 1902, ended in a 4-1 FA Cup win, while that semi-final first leg encounter last season ended 1-0 thanks to Nathan Redmond’s goal. Referee Neil Swarbrick cautioned Jay Rodriguez and Dusan Tadic that night.
Martin Atkinson last refereed Liverpool in their 3-3 draw at the Emirates, when he only cautioned Alex Iwobi for a foul. He has yet to referee Saints so far this season, the last time having been October 2016, when they drew 0-0 at Leicester in the Premier League.

I wish I had a £1 for every time I have been asked during week for my opinions regarding the offside decision at the recent Liverpool v Tottenham game. The bottom line here is that the interpretation of the law needs changing, we need to simplify matters for all concerned, players, spectators and, undoubtedly, for the Assistant Referees. Keep it simple – flag Kane offside ……

#SOULIV Welcome to St Mary’s for the next of our weekend games here on RefCam, with my thanks to Dean Mohareb for his expert coverage of this afternoon’s game at St James’ Park. Dean will be back on duty for tomorrow evening’s Premier League game as West Brom visit Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.
