Southampton v Chelsea

FINAL SCORE: 2 – 3

S.M at 2018-04-14 14:34:05

Summary:   This game gave the Referee a good test to ensure  control was  maintained. Two  cautions in the first half did not have the desired effect as even more stronger disciplinary action should have been applied following Alonsos stamp on Long. Players are aware when serious offences are committed and action not taken, and this manifested itself in the second half when foul after foul was committed and hence Mike Dean was dishing out cards like confetti to assert his authority. The Referee worked hard to deal with quick counter attacks but rarely managed to make up ground to be as near to play as possible. The nearer to play a Referee can be the more credible his decisions are and can also help to prevent some of the offences that were resulted in cautions. Overall not one of Mike Deans best performances but then again these have been few and far between. Thanks for being with me this afternoon and I look forward to your company again tomorrow.

A good offside flag by AR1 as Chelsea seek an equalising goal.

S.M at 2018-04-14 13:43:02

Another quick break by Southampton and Mike Dean was struggling to make up ground.

S.M at 2018-04-14 13:39:59

In fact Hoeljbjerg could have received a second yellow for kicking the ball into the crowd when I think back to the incident.

S.M at 2018-04-14 13:35:26

Just realised Hoeljbjerg was also given aYellow Card for a foul just prior to the Ward-Prowse incident.

S.M at 2018-04-14 13:28:39

Having had the opportunity to see the replay of the Alonso challenge on Long, Mike Dean should have seen the stamp committed by Alonso and dismissed the Chelsea player.  Disappointing is the fact that the Referee was really well placed to have a clear view of the challenge and yet failed to deal with it correctly.

S.M at 2018-04-14 13:22:56

Since Southampton scored the number of fouls has increased and rather surprisingly only the one caution for Ward-Prowse. The Referee needs to assert his authority and recognise the types off offences that have become prevalent to ensure control does not become threatened. Alonso was fortunate to escape without at least a caution for his challenge on Long and the Referee needs to be aware of the danger of not dealing strongly when such offences are committed.

Half Time

S.M at 2018-04-14 13:18:32

Christensesn fouls long and correctly penalised. One or two niggly fouls now creeping into the game.  Ward-Prowse fouls Zappacosta. Free kick awarded.  Yellow Cardfor Ward-Prowse. Foul by Alonso on Long but no disciplinary action taken. At the very least a yellow card was deserved. The Referee needs to remain alert and deal strongly to prevent an escalation of problems.  Foul by Kante on Soares.

S.M at 2018-04-14 13:09:13

A quick flag by AR1 when ball rebounded to Tadic in an offside position. The Referee rightly allowed play to continue as the goalkeeper was in possession of the ball.

S.M at 2018-04-14 13:05:56

Foul by Yoshida on Morata. Free-kick to Chelsea. Good assistance from AR2 to indicate foul by Morata on Yoshida. Free-kick to Southampton and warning for Morata.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:58:41

The Referee has to be careful not to get in the way when adopting a static position close to play. Push on Bertrand not detected and could have led to a Chelsea goal but fortunately the ball was headed over the bar.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:55:08

Good advantage applied by the Referee as Southampton attack.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:52:17

GOAL! for Southampton following a quick counter-attack as Tadic scores.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:48:33

Foul by Romeu. Free kick correctly awarded to Chelsea.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:45:31

A corner kick wrongly awarded to Chelsea when the ball rebounded off Morata. Fortunately nothing came from the corner kick.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:42:54

Offence missed by the Referee as Cahill caught his opponent as he went to make a tackle.  However, a free kick correctly awarded to the home team in the next phase of play.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:39:01

Mike Dean puts in a reasonable sprint as Chelsea clear the ball. Early days though and he needs to maintain this sort of movement.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:33:06

Good, prompt flag by AR2 to indicate hand ball by a Chelsea attacker.

S.M at 2018-04-14 12:30:26

A beautiful sunny day at St Marys as Chelsea get the game under way.
