Southampton v Bournemouth

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 2 - 0

This was no full bloodied derby game but it was high profile and live games are always a banana skin for any Premier League Referee, but Craig Pawson can rest easy on that score, this was a very accomplished performance.

His game today was built on a strong platform of identification of offences, good recognition of acceptable verses careless verses reckless player contact. There can be very little argument with his reading of player challenges and as such all of the cautions were well judged particularly Wanyama’s first half reckless tackle on Smith and his rash second half challenge on Tomlin. Craig also judged his involvement level well reading play astutely keeping a low profile when the match tempo dictated and never becoming unnecessarily the centre of attention. I must also praise his creating a great viewing angle to determine that Wanyama and not Yoshida made the challenge for the red card incident. He moved around well and looked comfortable all afternoon.

Both Assistants looked solid, amazingly the balance of active play fell heavily to Andy Halliday with around 80% of first half possession to Saints and 75% of second half possession to Cherries most of it played in the half that Andy was patrolling, that’s not Marc Perry’s fault mind. However a good day for the match official’s and they should all feel very pleased with the way this game went for them!

My summary will follow

RH at 2015-11-01 18:46:58

A minimum of 4 minutes added time

RH at 2015-11-01 18:44:41

A rare positional error for the Referee as he got in the way of the ball in that last Cherries attack

RH at 2015-11-01 18:43:26

If Cherries score now we could be in for an interesting finale!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:41:01

Despite the plea’s from the Cherries fans, that was no back pass by van Dijk

RH at 2015-11-01 18:40:05

Tomorrow night on Refcam we feature the Tottenham v Aston Villa game which kicks off at 20.00, Villa desperately need something out of that game to arrest the awful run they’re on at present. Will this be a chance to impress the new manager, whoever that is? Tottenham meanwhile are proving to be a difficult team to beat these days! Mike Dean is the Referee for this one!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:38:43

That red card incident was a good spot by Craig Pawson, there were two Southampton players in close attendance as Wanyama made that challenge, if he had not made such a good viewing angle he could well have identified Yoshida as the offender!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:36:14

Red CardWanyama picks up his second cautionable offence of the game as he grounds Tomlin making no contact with the ball near his own penalty area, Saints are down to ten men!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:34:05

Just for good measure he explains to Bertrand the reason for his signalling the ball being marginally out of play

RH at 2015-11-01 18:32:51

We all know that the roles of Referees and Assistant Referees are affected by concentration, but given the pattern of play today and the balance of possession, Andy Halliday must be by some margin so far the most involved Assistant in active play!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:29:13

Assistant Andy Halliday exchanging words of warning with van Dijk as he tangled with a Bournemouth defender, good team work!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:27:28

TV replays show that the ball struck the defenders stomach again, so no penalty for the Cherries!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:24:45

Following a foul by van Dijk on Richie, Good technical management of the defensive wall by the Referee which enabled Stanislas goes close for the Cherries

RH at 2015-11-01 18:22:17

Yellow CardGosling gets the latest caution of the game as he goes in recklessly on Clasie

RH at 2015-11-01 18:20:33

Optimistic shouts for a Cherries penalty by the travelling faithful,  but the ball clearly striking Yoshida’s stomach!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:18:42

The Referee continues to control this game from a position of strength both in terms of his involvement level and his reading of careless and reckless challenges!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:15:26

Another good advantage played after a foul on Cherries King in that last attack

RH at 2015-11-01 18:14:24

Yellow CardFrancis late a reckless from behind on Pelle, nailed on caution!

RH at 2015-11-01 18:10:41

Good advantage played in that last Cherries attack as Arter was fouled

RH at 2015-11-01 18:09:31

Craig Pawson is operating in the left hand channel as Bournemouth attack this half where as in the first half he was more central going forward, reserving his wider patrol for Southampton attacks

RH at 2015-11-01 18:05:56

First menacing break down the right from Smith as the visitors break wide right, if this is the pattern of play Craig Pawson may have to change his patrol pattern this half

RH at 2015-11-01 18:03:58

Tactical substitutions by the Cherries at half time, will they seek to play further up the field of play and gain more possession in the Saints half? this may see a more even split of play between the two Assistants

RH at 2015-11-01 18:01:38

we’re underway again at St Mary’s!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:54:23

A sound first half for the match officials, they’ve judged their involvement level well so far, a straight forward yellow card and good tolerance level on acceptable contact verses careless challenge, TV pictures show that Pelle was more powerful than the Cherries defender for the second goal, but not enough contact to consider it a careless challenge. Both Assistants look solid, with Andy Halliday clearly having more of the game with the Saints forwards, on that basis it looks like a busier second half for Marc Perrry, unless Bournemouth get their possession football game going, but so far so good!

Half Time

RH at 2015-11-01 17:45:36

A minimum of 1 minute added time

RH at 2015-11-01 17:43:37

Important moments here as its crucial to Bournemouth that they keep this to 2-0 before half time, the Match officials must be aware of this!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:39:59

Tomorrow night on Refcam we feature the Tottenham v Aston Villa game which kicks off at 20.00, Villa desperately need something out of this game to arrest the awful run they’re on at present. Will this be a chance to impress the new manager, whoever that is? Tottenham meanwhile are proving to be a difficult team to beat these days! Mike Dean is the Referee for this one!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:38:14

Craig Pawson trying to keep the game moving as he play advantage from a hold on Pelle

RH at 2015-11-01 17:36:38

GOAL!Pelle scores from another cross from the left!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:33:41

TV confirming a great non offside flag  from Andy Halliday in the build up to the goal as Bertrand timed his run perfectly before he crossed for Davis to score!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:31:59

GOAL!Davis breaks the deadlock, 1-0 Southampton!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:31:01

As I said earlier Saints looking to use width with Cherries playing up to the lone man up front (Murray) The home team with 86% percentage away team 14%, both Assistants are operating in very contrasting tactical situations!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:26:55

TV replays of a Saints penalty appeal confirm that the ball hit the Cherries defenders stomach area, no handball!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:24:49

Matt Richie felt that he was shown too much close attention and closed down too quickly, unfortunately it was off the Referee’s sight of vision, which is what Craig Pawson is trying to explain

RH at 2015-11-01 17:22:50

Yellow Cardreceives the first caution of the game for a late and reckless challenge, looked a good call to me

RH at 2015-11-01 17:21:22

Fonte pulling Murray down and rightfully giving away a free kick

RH at 2015-11-01 17:19:52

Craig Pawson sprinting powerfully there through midfield as Southampton mounted that last attack, looked around the seven metres per second mark!

RH at 2015-11-01 17:17:28

The Referee is keeping a low profile at present which suits the current  match tempo

RH at 2015-11-01 17:13:27

Noticeable at challenges on the goalkeeper and close ball in/out of play situations that the Referee is keeping in eye in for late challenges

RH at 2015-11-01 17:10:39

Good team work between Referee and active assistant as the ball just crossed the goal line at that last Saints attack

RH at 2015-11-01 17:07:29

Saints  by contrast are using width down both sides to get behind the away defence, very different game plans for both Assistants to operate with

RH at 2015-11-01 17:05:26

Already obvious that Bournemouth are pressing high and attempting to pressure the home defence, active Assistant Marc Perry will need to watch any challenge that gives the Cherries possession in the final third

RH at 2015-11-01 17:00:21

Our match Referee Craig Pawson gets us underway!

RH at 2015-11-01 16:56:37

Today’s Match Referee is Craig Pawson. His Assistant Referees are Andy Halliday and Marc Perry, The Fourth Official is Lee Mason
