Full time summary

RCT at 2017-04-01 19:43:43

Full time summary -

As we discussed at half time then JM has continued into the 2nd half:

  • Good overall match control of this south coast derby. Aided by good player behaviour and respect towards each. Just the one yellow card correctly shown to Romeu.
  • JM has aided his match control by a stepped approach by talking to players at every opportunity to slow down things when needed.
  • He got into a good viewing position to judge no penalty kick to Saints in the 44th minute - key match decision. However, as we have discussed in my blog then in the 78th minute key match decision the B. penalty award was for me incorrect as on replay I could not see where Bertrand had committed the shirt pull / foul on his opponent? There seemed a lengthy delay in the award by JM and my thoughts are that AR. Eddie Smart (and is confirmed by his flag signal on replay) that from his view he would have indicated to JM to award a penalty kick. In these situations then Jon Moss would have relied on his Assistants judgement which sadly was incorrect. Otherwise Eddie has had a good game. But his judgement here was sadly lacking just as well B. missed the penalty kick. Also the penalty kick saw Arter kicking the ball twice (left first then right foot) before missing the goal. Fortunately there was not a goal otherwise this would have been a massive talking point.

Areas for learning and education for Referees would be: As we have discussed in my blog for JM to just to look at working on width and viewing angles particulalry on those quick breakaways - as a Referee is it key to be on your toes and anticipate that very quick breakaway in play.   What are your thoughts?   Join in on Twitter @youaretheref

What are your thoughts ON THE PENALTY KICK?     Joining in on Twitter @youaretheref or e-mail at info@you-are-the-ref.com

B. penalty kick.

Replay also show that Arter played the ball with his left foot first followed up by his right foot. Would have been controversial had the goal been scored.

B. miss penalty kick - this WOULD have been a decision which would have BEEN REFERRED TO VAR and I AM SURE THAT THE DECISION WOULD HAVE BEEN REVERSED NOT A PENALTY KICK FOR ME.

Tadic off McQueen on

RCT at 2017-04-01 19:07:07

Bertrand foul? on Fraser and a penalty is awarded by JM after a fairly lengthy time did Eddie Smart award this? for me I cannot see how this can be penalty?

Your thoughts?

As we have discussed one decision can easily change the tempo of a game which is currently cruising to a stalemate.

71

RCT at 2017-04-01 19:00:31

A number of chances for B. in that last attack, sees JM looking to get in the best viewing position

70

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:58:32

No foul on Long is correct in front of Andy Halliday - when challenges are very close to your position as an AR it is easy to incorrectly read them. So no foul is correct.

Close for Saints great ball from Tadic to Long just goes wide

No foul on Boufal in the B. penalty area is correct.

60

Well that was a great chance for Afobe as he puts the ball wide

57

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:45:28

Good teamwork on that last throw in to S. as JM looked to Eddie to lead on the signal and directional restart.

55

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:43:28

Credit also to the players for their discipline in this South Coast Derby so far - Good response and respect shown towards each other.

Concentration, Focus and Alertness now are key as a referee as one decision can easily change a game and tempo.

No foul on Redmond as he races down the wing in a challenge with a B. player

Half Time Summary

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:26:50

For me to half time Jon Moss has shown:

  • Good overall match control of this south coast derby.
  • Aided by a stepped approach to match control, he has talked to the players.
  • He got into a good viewing position to judge no penalty kick to Saints in the 44th minute - key match decision.
  • Particularly good support from AR Eddie Smart in terms of Offside judgements, ball out of play judgements and support in terms of free kick awards

Areas for learning and education for Referees would be:

As we have discussed in my blog for JM to just to look at working on viewing angles and on those quick breakaways - as a Referee is it key to be on your toes and anticipate that very quick break in play.

Big shouts by Saints Players as Yoshida claims he was pulled to the ground

42

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:13:52

Eddie Smart correctly signals a ck to S. Good support from ES as JM needed his support here.

38

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:10:29

Rodriguez is correctly flagged offside by Eddie Smart. Did you see the France v Spain Friendly when VAR was used?

Video technology was used to correct two wrong decisions as Spain beat France in a friendly in Paris.

France striker Antoine Griezmann had a goal ruled out by a video assistant referee for offside.

It is against us today, but if we have to go through this, it will be the same for everyone

France coach Didier Deschamps on Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

And Spain's second goal, scored by Gerard Deulofeu, was awarded by the video official after an assistant referee wrongly flagged for offside.

David Silva had opened the scoring for Spain with a penalty after Laurent Koscielny fouled Deulofeu.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is currently undergoing trial runs, with Fifa president Gianni Infantino keen to employ the system during the World Cup in Russia next year.

32

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:05:07

Davis clear off the line - not close enough to use the goal line technology available

31

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:03:05

Foul by Ward Prowse on King slight delay in award to see if an advantage could be played

30

RCT at 2017-04-01 18:01:32

FK to S. foul by King on Cedric - correctly awarded

27

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:59:46

CK to B. sees JM take up the optimum position to view players movement / challenges in the penalty area.

25

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:56:25

Ck to Saints brings loud cheers from Saints fans following the last B. GK decision

22

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:55:20

Again a very quick break from Josh King leaves JM some way behind play should a key decision be required - really important to keep on your toes, anticipate play and to create those wider viewing angles

20

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:52:15

Cook commits a careless foul on Redmond - fk awarded to Saints.

18

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:51:20

GK to B. when the ball clearly goes out of play from B. Cook - If JM had created an angle here wider he would have picked up the clear deflection off the B. Player. Key to create these angles to pick up these decisions

17

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:48:36

Andy Halliday correctly signals King of B. offside

15

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:47:51

Good supportive flag from Eddie Smart fk to B. Foul on Francis by Rodriguez - always good for an Assistant to get in first and signal fouls similar to this one

14

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:45:56

Rodriguez is correctly flagged offside by Eddie Smart - confirmed by replay

12

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:44:45

GK to B. is correct as the ball has last deflected of Rodriguez

10

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:42:44

No foul given a challenge in the back of Rodrigeuz - followed up by an advantage to S.

8

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:40:51

Injury to Cook and the B. physio is on and the field of play - the player then has to leave the field of play until he receives the signal from the referee to return onto the field of play.

7

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:39:06

Very quick break by Saints - in this situation JM is a long way from play should a big decision be needed - always best to keep on your toes and anticipate those quick breakaways

5

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:36:57

Foul on Pugh by Cedric JM stops play and speaks to Cedric an early calming word - followed up by a foul on Redmond

2

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:33:38

Early fk to Saints awarded from a close position by Jon Moss

Pre Match

RCT at 2017-04-01 17:26:41

The Saturday evening live ref cam commentary game with a 5.30pm kick off at St Mary`s Stadium Southampton, will see The Saints take on Bournemouth in a South Coast Derby. Saints will be without ace forward Gabbiadini as he is sidelined through injury.

After a great run of home form Southampton have just took their foot off the gas a little recently losing 3 of their last 4 home games. One of which was to an in form Spurs.

Southampton are lying in 10th place in the English Premier League standings with 33 points, 33 goals scored and 36 goals against. In the last 27 league games they have failed to win 12 of their last 27 matches in the English Premier League. In their last match they lost against Tottenham. Southampton have lost 3 of their last 5 matches before this match with Bournemouth.
