Southampton v Aston Villa

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 6 - 1

Surprisingly despite a disastrous opening the talking point post match will not be the Match Officials.Bobby Madley had a solid game today, he always had good control of the game, used his natural qualities to manage the players and got his careless/reckless threshold correct on physical contact. A couple of cautions about right. As Keith Hackett believes, i agree that Bobby Madley is a great prospect, he looks the part and with growing confidence can emerge as a capable performer at this level. There is a ”but’ coming here and its centres on his Technical game. Firstly he needs to improve his mobility in order to venture into areas out side of his box to box rectangle to gain good viewing angles in open play. On two significant occasions he did in open play, naively in the first half he could have got stranded when Saints scored their third goal, but he got it right in the closing minutes to wave away Villa free kick protests and award a corner, so he can do it, lets see more of that please?  The other observation is this anticipation of play at ceremonial free kicks. Twice in this game a t Villa free kicks in the final third he guessed where the ball would go. he was right on one occasion but on the other occasion he got it wrong. He needs to keep the ball and potential participants in view at all ceremonial free kicks. So plenty of potential but much for Howard Webb and the Coaching team to work on. As i have said in my match blog it was a tale of two Assistants today. Darren Cann is like a vintage wine, he put in a great performance , the only blemish being that Lowton Challenge on Mane. As for Peter Kirkup he was a lucky lad today, the fact that Saints scored six goals with only one in reply will take the spotlight off what was an awful flag, not only was Pelle onside but play was developing wide of Pelle when he made his call. As i have suggested, he needs to review his pre-match routine, clearly he is not tuned in enough in the early minutes of games. But all in all this game will be remembered for a poor performance from Villa but a cracking attacking display from Southampton!

Summary to follow

RH at 2015-05-16 14:37:18

At that last ceremonial free kick to Villa, again the Referee anticipates that the ball will come into the box over his right shoulder. he was  walking forward with only a quick glance over his right shoulder to the ball, what would have happened if the ball was played in left?

RH at 2015-05-16 14:34:09

Three minutes added time!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:33:53

Why is Koeman wearing a coat?? I’m only twenty miles away and like the tee shirted people in the stadium, think its a warm day!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:31:50

That’s better Bobby, you were in a great position for that last Saints attack to award that corner, that is exactly what i’ve been looking for!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:29:57

There’s more Premier League action coming your way later this afternoon, we’re covering the Liverpool verses Crystal Palace game on Merseyside for Steven Gerrards last home game!. Then tomorrow we’ve a couple of Premier League games for you, Wilfred Bony makes his return to South Wales for the Swansea Man City fixture, then at 1600 it’s a Premier League classic as the other half Manchester entertains Arsenal in a game that never disappoints!  The Refcam weekend is rounded off with our Sunday night MLS coverage at 22.00 of the Orlando verses LA Galaxy match, when I’ll be your Refcam coach as we go stateside!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:28:49

I like Bobby Madleys man management though, rightly having words there with Pelle for that late careless challenge on Okore

RH at 2015-05-16 14:26:20

So following on from Keith’s comments, i thinks he’s tried to address the dynamic sprint issue, he’s still not there yet but he has varied his pace and moved well in midfield. My observations on positioning and movement revolves around his need to move out of that ‘box to box’ rectangle

RH at 2015-05-16 14:25:22

GOAL!Pelle scores! this time there’s no offside flag to rule it out!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:22:27

Well this what Keith Hackett thought of Bobby Madley’s handling of the Sheffield Wednesday Leeds game three weeks back, this is what he thought;

He is an imposing figure and certainly operates with authority.

Madley communicates well and leaves players in no doubt what is expected of them.

His 10-yard free-kick management, aided by the use of the spray, could not be faulted. He looked comfortable and remained calm when giving his decisions.

Robert has great potential. I would love to see Howard Webb take him under his wing, giving the appropriate coaching that he so clearly needs.

Madley’s movement at the moment is one-paced and exaggerated by a wide stride pattern that gives one the sense that he is laboring when he is not.

At times he becomes detached from play due to an inability to apply a dynamic sprint.

RH at 2015-05-16 14:19:43

Looks like i spoke too soon! Lowton all over Mane in front of Darren Cann and he didn’t flag a free kick

RH at 2015-05-16 14:17:00

We’ve been playing an hour on a warm day in an enclosed stadium with an ‘end to end’ game. We have a young Referee who should be looking to impress and make his mark in his 10th game of the season on a ‘live game’  Thing is i haven’t seen him following through into the penalty very much. Bet Clattenburg would have been all over it!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:13:22

Yellow Card12th yellow card of the season for Victor Wanyama as he goes in late on Delph

RH at 2015-05-16 14:11:47

Good Refereeing there as Long fouled Grealish the Referee looked to play an advantage but then brought play back, advantage has been a good feature of the Referees game today!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:10:37

Bobby Madley does like to concentrate his patrol path in that rectangle between the penalty area’s. He’ll need to develop his game so that he can on occasions move outside of that rectangle to gain the right viewing angles as play goes wide, particularly when teams use wing backs

RH at 2015-05-16 14:06:17

Okore and Mane meet the Saints player goes to ground but no free kick, absolutely right!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:05:01

I don’t want to tempt fete, but having done the Refcam on the Chelsea Liverpool game last Sunday and now covering this game, isn’t Darren Cann in great form at the moment, pure quality!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:03:22

Mane caught in a careless challenge by Bacuna, free kick to Saints that brings a great non flag by Darren Cann as Font was in a offside position, well done Darren!

RH at 2015-05-16 14:01:40

Villa ring the changes as Gabriel Agbonlahor replaces Charles N’Zogbia, tactically this shouldn’t change much for the Match officials, he’ll still be looking to play balls into Benteke, so potentially more offside decisions for Peter Kirkup to make!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:58:11

Another good advantage this time going Saints way as they build deep from wide left

RH at 2015-05-16 13:57:12

Good advantage well signaled as Villa build from the back!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:55:28

The second half taking on where we left off, Villa clearly needing to get some respectability and Saints not taking their foot off the gas!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:54:29

Good to see Bobby Madley calming down Westwood and Mane at that last corner kick

RH at 2015-05-16 13:53:55

Peter Kirkup clearly needs to review his pre-match routine, i recall the Newcastle Man United game, when as today he made a serious error in the open minutes of the game. On both occasions his focus and concentration have been called into question. You need to get this right Peter, you have to enter the field of play fully foussed, you can’t afford to make any more key match errors like these

RH at 2015-05-16 13:50:35

Good offside flag by Darren Cann flags a tight offside call against Pelle

RH at 2015-05-16 13:48:46

The second half starts!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:42:07

A solid first half performance from Bobby Madley, he’s judged his involvement level well and has looked comfortable, he looks the part and clearly as i said before cuts an authoritative figure , the one caution was correct and i would back him on his threshold level of acceptable physical contact. He just needs to take heed of those two points i raised re the wide running when the ball is going to be played in a leave him adrift of play, he also needs to take up a ceremonial free kick position that allows him to view a ball played into the centre from a wide position. My only other observation being that this is an open game played on a warm day, he could be tested from a physical perspective in the second half. A tale of two Assistants though, Darren Cann looking solid, but Peter Kirkup, oh dear, had to be the worst offside flag I’ve seen this season, that call will keep you awake  tonight when you see it again Peter!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:33:29

Half Time

RH at 2015-05-16 13:33:20

GOAL!Christian Benteke gets Vila off the mark!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:31:30

Three minutes added time!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:31:17

No caution earlier as Westwood committed a borderline challenge on Mane, probably looked worse in slow motion though!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:29:21

Well who would have thought it, we witness arguably the worst offside decision of the season, but its had little effect as the home team are 5-0 up!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:27:24

RH at 2015-05-16 13:26:17

A decent first half from Bobby Madley however on a couple of occasions his inexperience was evident, nothing to significant but that pointless  wide run for the third goal and his anticipation at that last ceremonial Villa free kick are certainly things that the Coaching team will work on with him

RH at 2015-05-16 13:23:16

GOAL!Shane long with the best goal of the five!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:22:15

The Referee got caught out with that last Villa ceremonial free kick, he anticipated that the ball would be played in to the box from a wide left position, in fact the ball went centre to Bacuna, the Referee was wrong footed with the ball played in behind him, you’ll need to learn from that one Bobby!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:19:27

Good spot there by the Referee as Bacuna’s heels were clipped

RH at 2015-05-16 13:18:59

Bobby Madley certainly looking comfortable at the moment, he does cut an authoritative figure, I guess the test in this game could revolve around his fitness particularly on a warm day like this with an ‘end to end game’

RH at 2015-05-16 13:16:40

Saints look dangerous every time they attack!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:15:15

Both Assistants really do need to be switched on in this game, Mane is on fire with his runs and balls played into the right hand channel for Pelle and Long, we’ve already seen how crucial that can be if a bad offside call is made! Darren Cann will need maximum concentration as Villa’s only current route to goal is balls played into the final third to Benteke, Both Assistants have much to do!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:11:48

GOAL!Less than half hour played and its looking embarrassing for Villa 4-0

RH at 2015-05-16 13:09:48

There’s not much air down at ground level in this stadium, its going to be warm too in the South Coast sunshine , if the game maintains this open end to end style, the Referee is going to do much running today!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:07:49

Good advantage played in that last Saints attacks as Mane was fouled

RH at 2015-05-16 13:07:06

Yellow CardFirst caution as Westwood brings down Mane, fully justified as Mane was mounting a dangerous run!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:05:47

With so much attacking emphasis by the home team and counter attacking from Villa, this game is proving to be end to end!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:03:39

Both the Villa defence and Peter Kirkup having nightmare starts to this game!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:02:39

In the build up to that third goal Bobby Madley ran very wide as he tracked play, too wide in my view as it was always going to end up in a cross, careful Bobby!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:01:19

GOAL!3-0 Unbelievable!  Mane on a hat-trick!

RH at 2015-05-16 13:00:12

GOAL!2-0 Mane sweeps up after Shane Long goes to ground

RH at 2015-05-16 12:59:26

Well i’ve no preference who wins this game, but from a Match Officials perspective that will take some pressure off Peter Kirkup!

RH at 2015-05-16 12:58:18

GOAL!1-0 Saints as Mane opens the scoring!

RH at 2015-05-16 12:57:00

Darren Cann with a good ‘no flag’ as Benteke goes in on goal!

RH at 2015-05-16 12:55:28

Kirkup does better this by keeping the flag down as Pelle goes in on goal

RH at 2015-05-16 12:54:38

Seeing TV replays of that disallowed goal for offside, it really is a poor decision, Pelle is clearly onside as the ball is played in, Peter Kirkup will have nightmares over that one!

RH at 2015-05-16 12:52:40

Grealish rightly penalised for a careless challenge on Gazzaniga

RH at 2015-05-16 12:51:35

Peter Kirkup making an awful error as he incorrectly flags Graziano Pelle offside when the striker was clearly not offside, ball ends up in the net should have been 1-0 Saints!

RH at 2015-05-16 12:49:04

Grealish gives away a free kick this time Long is the victim of a careless challenge

RH at 2015-05-16 12:48:07

I know from personal experience what a superb playing surface the St Mary’s turf is, TV pictures confirming this!

RH at 2015-05-16 12:46:57

Shane Long with a careless challenge gives away the first free kick

RH at 2015-05-16 12:45:50

Today’s Match Referee Bobby Madley has Refereed 9 Premier games to date having shown 25 yellow cards and no red cards, with an average of 2.78 yellow cards a game

Welcome to our coverage of this South Coast fixture, where the Saints will be looking to sign off in grand style in their last home League game this season, but the visitors Aston Villa still need the points to kill off any relegation worries, so there is plenty to play for!
