The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • No Red car for Vazquez following his shocking challenge on Sterling
  • A strong Refereeing performance for the most part
  • A game plan built on confidence and presence
  • A testing final fifteen minutes for the Referee

For the most part this was a strong Refereeing performance from Damir Skomina I underlined his qualities at half time and throughout my blog. However late in the second half having missed a late challenge by Fernandinho on Kroos the Referee then settled for a yellow card  from his credible viewing angle when he should have shown red when Vazquez used excessive force to endanger the safety of Sterling in a shocking tackle. Just after that he missed an obvious offence by Fernandinho on Bale. Was the problem that this Referee does not always achieve a 180 viewing angle of play choosing to turn away and look over his shoulder, is that why he missed the first Fernandinho challenge? Its a pity because up to that point Damir Skomina was in complete control. Both Assistants made errors in first half offside decisions but in fairness they both did well  in the build up to the goal and a superb non flag when it looked like Modric was offside in the second half. I suppose the lesson of this game is to keep going and maintain your standards right to the end, for the first 75 minutes the match tempo and Referees control was sound, but some significant errors crept in in that final fifteen minutes. Having said that lets remember this was a Champions League Semi Final second leg no less! and this game was nowhere near as controversial as others played in recent days!

Good advantage played in midfield for a foul on Ronaldo as Real moved forward!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:30:16

Fernandinho commits an obvious foul challenger on Bale, nothing given, the Referee just needs to refocus here, he is not as much on top of things as he was earlier

RH at 2016-05-04 21:28:11

Yellow CardLucas Vazquez commits an awful tackle on Sterling, to be honest it was a challenge that endangered the safety of the City player, he should have been sent off!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:23:35

That incident is the only thing of note that the Referee has missed during this game so far!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:22:22

Fernandinho is late in on Kroos and the Real play reacts with a confrontation, the Referee missed it but input from a colleague advises the Referee to lecture both players, at least they got there in the end

RH at 2016-05-04 21:19:40

As we move into the final fifteen minutes will City raise their game and the match tempo?

RH at 2016-05-04 21:18:44

Aguero goes to ground near the Real penalty area, and rightly so nothing doing!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:17:02

Still this match is being played at this consistent tempo, again fuelled by dominant possession by the home team, no tempo management needed at the moment!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:14:18

Yellow CardStraight forward caution as Fernando holds Modric back!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:13:38

Ronaldo clatters into Clichy, the Referee closes in to ensure that nothing escalates,

RH at 2016-05-04 21:09:31

Referee Damir Skomina’s game is well suited to the business end UEFA Champions league and Europa League competitions, his confidence and reading of these games is pitched ideally for occasions such as this, I’m not quite so sure how his style of Refereeing would fare in Premier League games though!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:07:42

Ronaldo is signalled offside just before he using a hand to guide the ball into the net, no caution necessary though as the offside offence came first!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:05:03

Ronaldo and Otamendi tussle for the ball, nothing doing for the home star, its a goal kick, again the Referee unmoved by the histrionics of the Real player!

RH at 2016-05-04 21:00:18

The Referee moving in well to view that side edge of penalty area challenge by Sagna on Marcelo, good Refereeing

RH at 2016-05-04 20:56:30

Great offside decision by Assistant Robert Vukan, Otamendi playing Modric onside when he deceptively looked off!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:54:06

The pattern of play and tempo in the opening minutes of this half mirroring the first half action so far

RH at 2016-05-04 20:50:32

If Real press high in this half as they did the first then Assistant Vukan will be involved in the action more than he was before half time!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:49:19

Ronaldo rightly signalled offside as Real go on the attack!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:47:46

The second half has commenced!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:41:02

Damir Skomina is a very confident and self assured Referee, that has shone through during the first half, he has the mental strength and focus to judge each challenge on its merits and not be affected by the pressure and occasion. Several times home players have gone to ground even rolling around but he has been unmoved, impartial in fact. Conversely he has identified the careless and deliberate offences and then either immediately or following a deliberate delay acted with impact, great Refereeing! Just the one caution as De Bryune felled Marcelo, no complaints there! Real have been on top and both Assistants have shown their fallibility by signalling forwards offside at either end when there onside, having said that Assistant  Praprotnik did well not to signal Bale offside in the build up to the goal. Its still all to play for in the second half!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:33:03

Half Time

RH at 2016-05-04 20:32:51

As the players contested the ball near to the corner flag it was good to see both active Assistant and Additional Assistant Referee both well positioned and focused on the action!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:30:48

A minimum of two minutes additional time to be played

RH at 2016-05-04 20:29:46

City counter attacking as the half comes to an end and nearly getting that all important away goal!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:27:21

RH at 2016-05-04 20:25:39

Marcelo being signalled offside, a TV replay showing that Mangala played him onside, to compound matters the flag was late!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:23:46

Just going back to the free kick that led to the ‘offside’ goal, good Refereeing as the Referee attempted to allow play to continue before going back to have words with Frenandinho who blocked Kroos

RH at 2016-05-04 20:22:08

Real netting the ball but clearly ruled out for offside

RH at 2016-05-04 20:20:39

Having looed at the first half hour or so of the Referees performance, its noticeable that  Damir Skomina does not  follow Mark Clattenburgs example of maintaining a 180 degree face on view of play, preferring to look over his shoulder more

RH at 2016-05-04 20:19:02

An earlier penalty appeal following a Mangala handball, not for me, the ball was played towards the City from very close range!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:17:57

Aguero goes to ground after connecting with Ramos’s arm, a free kick will suffice, no card

RH at 2016-05-04 20:16:33

Yellow CardDe Bruyne halts Marcelo’s progress and earns the games first yellow card!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:12:48

Ramos stands in an offside position in the goal area as the free kick is taken and then can’t get onside early enough, bizarre!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:11:31

Not so Sagna as he commits a careless challenge

RH at 2016-05-04 20:11:05

Again the Referee is not tempted to award a free kick as Ronaldo collapses as he tussles for the ball with Otamendi

RH at 2016-05-04 20:09:00

City have it all to do, particularly as Real are dominating possession, consequently the tempo is steady at present not withstanding of course the volume of noise and pressure!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:06:47

Good call by Assistant Jure Praprotnik as Otamendi played Bale onside in the build up to that goal!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:05:37

GOAL!Bale opens the scoring with a superb strike!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:04:10

Modric goes to ground under pressure from Fernando the Referee is not impressed, looked a good call!

RH at 2016-05-04 20:00:12

Referee  Damir Skomina is squeezing play with the far side Assistant more than we usually see in UEFA Games

RH at 2016-05-04 19:58:05

Navas signalled offside when he looked level, in fairness to the Assistant he was obscuring the defender from view

RH at 2016-05-04 19:57:01

The Referee signals clearly that he expects the ball to be played into the Real Half of the field of play as the home team played the ball out for Kompany to be attended,

RH at 2016-05-04 19:54:53

Its not looking  good for the City Skipper who has to be replaced

RH at 2016-05-04 19:53:58

Kompany is receiving treatment having pulled up sharply in midfield!

RH at 2016-05-04 19:51:24

Bale goes to ground but the Referee is unimpressed!

RH at 2016-05-04 19:50:11

Fernando in carelessly on Modric for a midfield free kick

RH at 2016-05-04 19:47:46

Offside against Aguero produces the first free kick

RH at 2016-05-04 19:46:11

If you are watching the game on TV, Robert Vukan is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Jure Praprotnik is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2016-05-04 19:45:17

Our match Referee Damir Skomina gets us underway!

RH at 2016-05-04 19:41:57

The teams and match officials have entered the field of play!

RH at 2016-05-04 19:35:04
