Final Summary –

Andy Madley has shown that he clearly has the attributes with time to move onto the next step.

His Positives are that he certainly looks the part and did show good movement and fitness levels on this energy sapping playing surface. It was a big appointment for Andy and I am sure that he will have learnt a lot from this performance. Referees similar to Andy who are pushing onto the next level need appointments such as this one today.

The areas that I have mentioned in my BLOG that Andy needs to work at are having identified a reckless challenge by whistle and body language and decisive movement then why disappoint everyone with a lack of a yellow card. His authority was challenged by as we saw when Kassim 8 of Swindon in the 2nd half showed a complete lack of respect for Andy by his blatant movement from Andy when he was blowing his whistle to his back and then trying to get him to come back to show the yellow card. The Swindon goal keeper helped matters here as he quickly sensed that a 2nd yellow could be forthcoming and no one would have argued if this had been the case. When respect is high on the agenda and everyone watching this game including young players they will surprised by KASSIMs total lack of respect. I mentioned the 2 yellow cards not sanctioned in the first half and by the first yellow shown early in the 2nd half then there must have been discussion at half time between the Match Officials and the experienced 4th Official Mark Haywood regarding this area of disciplinary sanctions.

As for both ARs – Dan Cook showed good support in terms of his intervention between 2 players and Kassims yellow card this was proactive as it could well have spiralled out of control. Good support on ball out of play judgements. Just the one offside mentioned in my blog at half time that he could have kept his flag down by his side.

Wade Norcott – low profile just the one are mentioned when he could have given support at a free kick. Otherwise supportive judgements appeared to be correct.

Swindon still continue to press forward as we enter the closing stages of this Div 1 PLAY OFF FINAL

AM at 2015-05-24 19:25:05

A late challenge on the Swindon player goes unpunished by AM

AM at 2015-05-24 19:23:59

Reserve Assistant Shaun Hudson is just seen helping the 4th Official with player management on the touchline. It now takes 2!

AM at 2015-05-24 19:22:30

What are your thoughts on Andy Madleys performance today?

Is he a referee that you think will in time be on the Select Group?

AM at 2015-05-24 19:20:30

Ball is out of play for a goal kick to Swindon. It would appear that AM awarded this one as he would have had the better view with DC some way down the touchline

AM at 2015-05-24 19:18:54

With a Swindon attack I would like to see AM adopt a wider view and angle and penetrate that bit further on towards the penalty area. This would enable you to have a closer and wider view of any potential incidents in the KMI area / penalty area

AM at 2015-05-24 19:16:03

Preston sub – 34 off and 3 on – sub correctly managed by 4th and AR

AM at 2015-05-24 19:14:57

Throw in to Swindon with a clear communication signal seen from AM

AM at 2015-05-24 19:12:51

No free kick awarded by AM on the half way line, with no further free kick a throw in to Preston is the outcome. You really need to detect and penalise these careless challenges and AM needs to up his concentration levels as he appears at the moment to be mentally fatigued

AM at 2015-05-24 19:10:38

Advantage to Preston as AM clearly attempts to keep play flowing at every opportunity

Free kick to Preston again a supportive flag here from DC would have aided teamwork. Spray out as AM prepares the defensive back and draws his line for the Swindon Players to remain behind.

AM at 2015-05-24 19:05:36

What were your thoughts regarding Kassim 8 of Swindons complete lack of respect for Andy Madley following his yellow card. IN DAYS WHEN WE TALK ABOUT RESPECT THIS INCIDENT HIGHLIGHTED A VERY DISAPPOINTING LACK OF RESPECT SHOWN BY THIS PLAYER TOWARDS AM.

AM at 2015-05-24 19:01:57

DC has awarded a throw in to Preston and just over run past the ck flag. IT IS ALAWAYS BETTER IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR POSITION as an AR FROM CK FLAG and within play. Rather than over run past the corner flag

Swindon sub 15 off 10 on

Preston sub 10 off and 9 on.

AM at 2015-05-24 18:58:55

Going back to the non award of the  penalty. The Preston player was in a very close proximity to play and he could do nothing about the ball striking his arm from a very close distance

AM at 2015-05-24 18:57:01

Swindon Players claim handball in the Preston penalty area. AM has a clear view and it is clearly ball to hand and no penalty is CORRECT and clearly communicated by AM. Replays have confirmed this fact

AM at 2015-05-24 18:55:02

AM has a quiet word with the Captain of Preston and this is an area that he has attempted to work hard at

AM at 2015-05-24 18:52:13

Another careless challenge from a Swindon player on the half way line there is no advantage signal from AM and Beckford goes on to

GOAL! score his hatrick and Prestons 4th goal

AM at 2015-05-24 18:50:14

A good flag and intervention from AR Dan Cook and he is quickly in between both players

Yellow Card8 of Swindon who shows a complete lack of respect for AM by walking away from him, Swindon goal keeper comes into calm the situation but Kassim is fortunate to only receive a yellow card for his blantant lack of respect for AM and for me this is how players are towards you as a referee when you are too lenient.

AM at 2015-05-24 18:45:37

Again good management of the throw in by AM in particular when they are right in front of THE TECHNICAL AREA!

AM at 2015-05-24 18:44:17

Andy Madley is a referee who most certainly looks the part and has presence he just needs to be accurate in his decision making and be decisive and show a more ruthless streak as I have mentioned at half time. I am sure that his Coach will play a big part in this area of his development

AM at 2015-05-24 18:35:37

Half time summary:

Andy Madley has played an excellent advantage to Preston for the second goal and also correctly awarded a free kick which led to Prestons first goal. However he has missed a big opportunity when in the 25th Minute Byrne 15 of Preston has committed a reckless challenge on a Swindon player AMs body language and decisive movement into the action area, left us all thinking a yellow card would be the correct outcome. However he let himself down by not producing the yellow card you cannot manage challenges of this nature and you must produce the yellow card. This then led to AM being lenient with both Beckford and Stephens for yellow card offences. He will need to anticipate play more in the 2nd half as this will be a difficult half with Swindon 3-0 down and they need a miracle to get back in the game.

DC has supported AM well with a free kick and ck/gk signals just the one offside when he raised his flag when the Swindon player was onside.

WN has kept a low profile, but he should have raised his flag for a free kick when he was close to play and having a better view than AM

AM at 2015-05-24 18:23:40

Half Time3-0.

Half time summary to follow:

AM at 2015-05-24 18:22:58

Again AM is very close to play and having to do a dance around the players, he just needs to anticipate play and move wider to get a better view of the action

AM at 2015-05-24 18:20:51

4 minutes of added time are shown by Mark Haywood

AM at 2015-05-24 18:20:16

A shirt pull back by a Preston Player on a Swindon player, AM plays an advantage but for me he would have been better to have just awarded a free kick, just to keep control and particularly with Swindon 3-0 down and there is physical contact on the half way line which can cause a reaction and further sanctions.

AM at 2015-05-24 18:17:41

GOAL!3-0. Beckford again and this must be The Championship for next season now for Preston North End

AM at 2015-05-24 18:15:53

No free kick awarded by WN the AR close to the action, when challenges like this are not identified then it leads to further action from players. Nip it in the bud as an AR and assist your referee! get involved!

AM at 2015-05-24 18:14:03

The first offside flag raised is incorrect by Dan Cook as the Swindon Player is on side when the ball is played to him. Replays show he is level

AM at 2015-05-24 18:12:33

Foul on Beckford by 5 of Swindon and again AM takes a view not to show a yellow card. Both players have shown unsporting behaviour towards each other. Beckford has raised an arm towards his opponent and the Swindon player has deliberately held back Beckfords shirt

Grappling again in the Swindon penalty area as AM speaks to both Players. This is an area of concern as we see grappling back today.

Preston sub 12 off 31 on

AM at 2015-05-24 18:08:00

The Yellow card which should have been shown to Bryne 15 of Preston was an ideal opportunity for AM to show to everyone what challenges he would not tolerate. It also came at a good moment in the game for him

AM at 2015-05-24 18:05:26

Having viewed Simon Hoopers performance yesterday and also Andy Madley today, but appear to have difficulty in judging reckless v Careless challenges?

AM at 2015-05-24 18:03:06

AM is showing good movement to date. A challenge then comes in with AM blowing his whistle hard and swiftly moving into the scene. He has spoken to Byrne 15 of Preston. For me and having viewed replays this was a clear yellow card following a reckless challenge. AMs body language appeared to show that this would be the outcome, but he has disappointed us with not showing this yellow card.

AM at 2015-05-24 17:59:14

A stoppage here as a Preston Player is receiving treatment, good to see AM get hold of the ball, this ensures that it does not go walk abouts! You The Ref are in Charge!

AM at 2015-05-24 17:57:49

Keep an eye on the throw ins today as this is an area raised in Hacketts BLOG – Law 15 – The Throw in, too many are being delivered incorrectly

AM at 2015-05-24 17:56:09

WN is seen chasing the ball down to the Swindon penalty area, good practice as you can never assume anything in this game

AM at 2015-05-24 17:54:53

Again a good signal from DC for another ck to Swindon. AM is being proactive on grappling in the  penalty area. Having a clear word with both offending players

AM at 2015-05-24 17:52:33

Dan Cook close to play signals a ck to Swindon and this is confirmed by TV replays

AM at 2015-05-24 17:51:05

AM at 2015-05-24 17:49:14

AM good on placement for throw in to Preston, basic you may think, but it is all part of your Match Control and Management of the game

AM at 2015-05-24 17:47:41

GOAL!2-0 a great advantage played by AM to Preston with a good clear signal, brings another goal. I think that the TV Commentators have missed the credit that AM should receive for this goal!

AM at 2015-05-24 17:45:54

We need to take a very close look at Andy Madley today as he is a referee impressing at Football League level and working hard to get on The Premier League

AM at 2015-05-24 17:44:36

Dan Cook (DC) is on the Technical Area touchline

AM at 2015-05-24 17:43:57

4 of Swindon comes in with a careless challenge and is spoken to by AM. Good use of the whistle and also good man management of this situation

AM at 2015-05-24 17:42:28

Free kick to Swindon, correctly judged by AM

AM at 2015-05-24 17:41:49

Replays have just a good non offside flag for Preston from Wade Norcott (WN) on the near touchline, although he is having to work hard to keep up with play

AM at 2015-05-24 17:40:02

Thompson 2 of Swindon off injured in the challenge with Beckford and 36 is on

AM at 2015-05-24 17:39:04

What a start for Preston as Beckford puts the ball away. Replays have just shown that The Swindon Captain Thompson had a good hold of Beckfords shirt, however with Beckford scoring the goal we have to give credit for a great advantage if that is what the referee played however we did not have a view of the signal and he has given himself some thinking time to award the goal. Well done AM

AM at 2015-05-24 17:35:43

First decision for the referee and a free kick to Preston following a foul on Beckford. Spray is out as AM marches the defensive wall back, good early positive early signs from AM

AM at 2015-05-24 17:34:09

We are underway as AM blows his whistle

AM at 2015-05-24 17:33:27

We are ready to go and we wish all the match officials all the best today

AM at 2015-05-24 17:32:48

Andy Madley has refereed 36 games in The Football League this season (14 Championship) showing 105 yellow and 3 red cards this season. He has refereed both teams twice this season in The Football League

AM at 2015-05-24 17:30:27

Preston finished in League I – 10 points above Swindon, do you think that the Play Offs are the best way of deciding promotion? or should the teams that finish in the top 3 of League 1 just be promoted?

Let us know what you think by contacting us on either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

AM at 2015-05-24 17:28:12

Preston just missed out on automatic promotion following the final day of the season when a win for Milton Keynes Dons saw them take the final automatic place. Can Preston secure a win or will Swindon take the honours? what are your thoughts?

AM at 2015-05-24 17:23:04

Andy Madley (older brother of Robert Bobby Madley who is a referee on the Select Group of The Premier League)) has been appointed as the referee for todays Football League League 1 Play-Off Final between Preston North End and Swindon Town.

Madley will be assisted today at Wembley Stadium by Dan Cook and Wade Norcott. Mark Haywood will be on fourth official duties for this Final, while Shaun Hudson has been named as the reserve assistant referee. Madley, from West Yorkshire, made his Football League debut in 2011 when refereeing Morecambe versus Barnet, and has officiated in the Sky Bet Championship this season. The referee and his two assistants have already experienced Wembley this season, when they took charge of the FA Vase Final last weekend.

Well, good afternoon and a very warm welcome to this Division 1 Play Off Final to be played at Wembley Stadium, London in England. Well we now know that todays winners will be playing Hull City next season in The Championship as today they are the final team along with QPR and Burnley to be relegated from The Premier League.
