FINAL SCORE: 1 - 3

Well there were certainly talking points from the second half wasn’t there? trying to take them in order, Fellaini should have seen yellow for persistent infringement. I know that many of us feel awkward about Wayne Rooney interfering with the Preston keeper for United;s first goal, but in the present day game this is acceptable provided no contact with the ball or between players takes place, so fair goal in my view especially as it is debatable that Rooney was in the line of sight as the goalkeeper, so well done Assistant John Brooks. Kevin Davies should have been sent off, i can’t see what Phil Dowd was trying to achieve by not issuing a second caution and red card to the player. So we come to the United’s third goal and the penalty. Having the benefit of seeing TV replays the Preston Goalkeeper carelessly approaches the ball at pace forcing Rooney to take evasive action, yes he made a meal of it but the basis of the decision was in my view correct . So i’m with Phil Dowd on most of what went on, i’ll even forgive him for Fellaini not seeing yellow, but i can’t go with the failure to send Kevin Davies off. Other than that his man management was good and he read play well from a tactical perspective. Just goes to prove that you can’t always win them all!

A final corner to Preston as the home faithful cheer their team on!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:36:59

A goal line clearance from United which didn’t look to have crossed the line

RH at 2015-02-16 22:35:32

We’re now into 4 minutes added time!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:34:57

Reaction from Twitter now coming in on the penalty decision, Matt Shenton says ‘no contact dive. Big club gets offside goal & dodgy penno shocker’

RH at 2015-02-16 22:33:02

There’s a great weekend of Premier League action coming your way on REFCAM , why not join us next Saturday when Manchester City take on Newcastle at 5.30 as they attempt to close the gap on Chelsea and John Carver seeks to confirm his managerial credentials, plenty at stake there! An enticing double bill on Sunday sees Everton host Leicester at 2.05 in an important game for both teams, Everton needing the points to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle and the visitors looking for any points they can muster in a battle for survival.  Later that day at 4.15 Southampton entertain Liverpool at St Mary’s in a fascinating game that both teams need to win to keep their Champions League aspirations alive, would be great to have you with us for these cracking games!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:32:24

In all fairness to Phil Dowd from his position the penalty would have looked nailed on but early replays suggest that Rooney may have gone to ground with little or no contact

RH at 2015-02-16 22:30:52

GOAL!Rooney scores!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:30:35

Yellow CardPenalty and a caution for the Preston keeper Thorsten Stuckmann, was there contact?

RH at 2015-02-16 22:29:14

The reaction continues to come in from Twitter on the ‘Wayne Rooney’ goal, Nigel Freelove says ‘Keeper expecting him to interfere which he didn’t. Not in line of sight. Goal’

RH at 2015-02-16 22:27:12

United continue to allow Preston an opportunity to get back in the game, the pattern of play is not disciplined, but the Referee is reading things well to maintain good viewing angles

RH at 2015-02-16 22:23:41

Support on Twitter for my view that Kevin Davies should have seen Red!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:22:59

Read almost leveling for Preston, this game is not over by any means!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:22:06

Reaction coming in from Twitter on that first United Goal Garath Hague not happy but various other feel that it was a sound goal!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:18:04

Kevin Davies is replaced by  Simon Grayson, sensible!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:17:02

Well its all about timing and the focus will be off Phil Dowd for not sending off Kevin Davies, I wonder what the mood would have been if it was Preston who scored at that point?

RH at 2015-02-16 22:15:20

GOAL!Fellaini puts United ahead its 2-1

RH at 2015-02-16 22:14:53

Kevin Davies a very lucky man for not picking up a second caution for that Herrera, looked good enough to me for a second caution

RH at 2015-02-16 22:13:18

Yellow CardRojo picking up a caution

RH at 2015-02-16 22:12:49

So in the modern game was Rooney committing an offence by distracting the goalkeeper, he didn’t touch the ball so that’s ok isn’t it?

Yellow CardKilkenny blocks Young and rightly earns a caution!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:09:07

Preston not happy with that goal as Rooney is accused of interfering with the Goalkeepers line of sight!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:07:58

GOAL!Herrera levels it for United

RH at 2015-02-16 22:07:56

GOAL!Herrera levels it for United

RH at 2015-02-16 22:07:09

The Referee still operating his ‘box to box’ patrol path and why not, there’s very little that he’s missed so far!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:05:31

Heroic tackling from Huntingdon as Preston defend to the death!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:04:24

Garner almost adds a second as he just fails to make strong contact with the ball from a header!

RH at 2015-02-16 22:03:36

Fellaini concedes another midfield free kick, but no caution?

RH at 2015-02-16 22:02:59

United replace Falcao with Young, I wonder how that will affect things?

RH at 2015-02-16 22:01:23

Well the tempo has increased but not as much as i thought, that’s probably because United have not really raised their game, consequently Phil Dowd has not needed to up his game too much either!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:59:30

Yellow CardA caution earlier for Baird for his over celebration of the goal

RH at 2015-02-16 21:58:40

I wonder if the Referee is consider a persistent infringement caution for Fellaini, he’s getting close!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:57:00

Kevin Davies at the heart of the action again as Fellaini pushes him and concedes a free kick

RH at 2015-02-16 21:55:47

RH at 2015-02-16 21:54:12

The Referee does well to offer a close presence as Fellaini is fouled!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:52:34

Will the match tempo increase now, surely it must?

RH at 2015-02-16 21:51:39

Looking at the TV relays, i don’t think De Gea will want to see that goal again!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:50:35

GOAL!would you believe it! Baird scores for Preston, game on!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:49:37

Interesting there as the Manchester United players lined up for the kick off, Phil Dowd took the opportunity for a few words with Wayne Rooney, good man management

RH at 2015-02-16 21:47:59

The second half has started!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:39:19

Well as i said earlier the game is no classic but that should not detract from Preston’s work rate and tenacity. Its important that in such games the Referee judges his involvement level correctly, Phil Dowd has clearly shown his experience in judging this well. He’s been watchful on the aerial challenges, particularly where Fellaini is involved and he reacted quickly to caution Kevin Davies’s reckless tackle on Herrera. He has also read play well and not got caught up or too near the ball. A solid first half, lets hope that the second half goes just as well for the Match Officials

RH at 2015-02-16 21:32:54

Half Time

RH at 2015-02-16 21:32:42

Rooney is penalised in midfield as the first half comes to an end

RH at 2015-02-16 21:31:42

1 minute added time

RH at 2015-02-16 21:31:27

John Brooks (who has replaced Mike Mullarkey) making a great offside call against Garner

RH at 2015-02-16 21:30:01

United moving the ball around better at the moment, a useful final ball into Rooney looked dangerous, the active match officials may have to make some critical calls if players go to ground in those situations

RH at 2015-02-16 21:25:59

Yellow CardI spoke too soon as Davies recklessly tackles Herrera

RH at 2015-02-16 21:24:55

Phil Dowd closely monitoring aerial challenges involving Fellaini , sensible as it seems to be only potential source of conflict at the moment

RH at 2015-02-16 21:23:23

The game just a little lacking in quality at the moment, must offer Preston plenty of encouragement?

RH at 2015-02-16 21:20:57

The tactical fall out of this game is seeing plenty of players congesting the mid-field area, the Referee is taking great care not to get caught up in play and holding back sometimes in order to move in behind developing play, good stuff!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:18:02

Phil Dowd’s game plan looking good at the moment, a close presence to play, he’s not strangled the game but is clamping down on the pushes and midfield trips, all viewed from a solid box to box patrol path,

RH at 2015-02-16 21:15:26

Well its no classic so far but the atmosphere at Deepdale sounds superb!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:13:40

Herrera bring down Laird wide left for useful Preston free kick which Garner gets to first!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:12:00

Fellaini is still bleeding from his nose as a result of that earlier aerial challenge, Phil Dowd having a look to make sure everything is legal!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:10:44

Kevin Davies clearly pushing Vallencia and rightly penalised for it!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:07:06

Phil Dowd rightly penalising Garner for an arm over Rojo during an aerial challenge, good spot!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:05:26

United win a second corner as Preston are exposed by a quick attack!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:04:22

Fellaini catching an arm in the face during an aerial challenge, nothing malicious but the Referee will need to be aware of it!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:01:45

Wrights clumsy tackle on Falcao earns Di Maria a free kick on goal, but it goes comfortably wide!

RH at 2015-02-16 21:00:26

Garner going to ground in the United penalty area, but TV suggesting that he went to ground far too easily!

RH at 2015-02-16 20:58:07

Phil Down almost exclusively operating in a classic ‘box to box ‘ patrol path in the opening ten minutes, play has not demanded anything else so far!

RH at 2015-02-16 20:56:15

Phil Dowd playing an advantage on that last United attack, the midfield Preston challenge looked clumsey

RH at 2015-02-16 20:53:39

Well its a competitive opening if not a fast one!

RH at 2015-02-16 20:52:13

Blind conceding a free kick to Kevin Davies, who went to ground rather easily!

RH at 2015-02-16 20:49:56

Kevin Davies on the end of a careless challenge, first free kick to Preston in their own penalty area

RH at 2015-02-16 20:48:40

United are quick out of the blocks and force an early corner!
