Full time summary –

The referee has as I have mentioned in my BLOGS worked hard to remain in control of this very physical game with a number of high challenges made by players from both teams detected / undetected. He has at times remained a fair distance from play and I would like to see him move closer to active play, continue to work on acceleration and movement and in particular move closer to play when in the vicinity of his AR`s. The yellow cards issued were all correct with the 21 of Portland in my opinion should have seen a 2nd yellow followed by a red card for his challenge on the 7 of Orlando. (2nd half)

The 9 of Portland should also have seen yellow for his reckless challenge on 27 of Orlando. (2nd half)

The real positive about the referee was his correct judgement of the foul by the Portland GK on the Orlando player to award a penalty kick to Orlando with the player going very wide of goal then this was not the denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity. With the Portland GK then saving KAKA`S penalty kick a retake (for Portland player encroachment into the Portland defending penalty area prior to the taking of the penalty kick) then this was then correctly retaken by  KAKA and he scored the retaken penalty kick.

We discussed at half time the flag work of the AR on the far touchline EM and in the 2nd half we saw an improvement in this area.

CS on the nearside touchline gave a good and solid AR performance as I have highlighted in my BLOG.

Full Time0-2 – goals by Larin and Kaka

AM at 2015-04-13 00:03:48

No free on KAKA as the player and his manager want a free kick correct judgement

AM at 2015-04-13 00:03:06

Again no free kick to Orlando is correct as the player looks for a stoppage

AM at 2015-04-13 00:01:25

A quick break and no foul to Orlando is correct with the referee working hard on pace in the late stages of this game. CS awards a goal kick and comes onto the goal line as 2 players tangle together good preventative management seen here

AM at 2015-04-12 23:59:14

4 minutes added time is shown by our 4th Official

AM at 2015-04-12 23:58:39

The commentators have mentioned that the penalty kick has been retaken for the Orlando GK being off his goal line prior to the taking of the penalty kick but for me the referee has correctly ordered the retake due to the encroachment of the Portland Players prior to the taking of KAKA`S penalty kick (into the Portland defending penalty area) well done referee correct

AM at 2015-04-12 23:55:15

Penalty kick to Orlando is correct following a foul challenge by the Portland GK on a Orlando Player. Kaka penalty kick is then saved by the Portland GK with the referee correctly awarding a re take due to encroachment by Portland Players prior to the taking of the penalty kick. Kaka scores to make it 0-2

AM at 2015-04-12 23:52:04

No free kick awarded to Portland then 20 Orlando Yellow Cardreckless challenge on opponent

AM at 2015-04-12 23:51:01

Portland sub 19 off 10 on

Orlando Sub 21 off 11 on

9 minutes plus added time subs bring change in tempo, let us see how the final minutes unfold

AM at 2015-04-12 23:49:23

yellow cards so far in this game are 2 & 21 Portland and 5 Orlando

Free kick awarded to Portland foul on Portland GK as the game enters a calmer period and more football is seen to be played

AM at 2015-04-12 23:46:03

CK to Portland as they increase the pressure good support from CS here to spot the deflection and signal CK

AM at 2015-04-12 23:44:51

No free kick awarded to Orlando KS has achieved a close position to judge and this is credible with a move of the hand no free kick

AM at 2015-04-12 23:43:35

Further free kick to Orlando awarded by the KS

AM at 2015-04-12 23:42:20

Free kick to Orlando following 9 of Portland reckless on 27 of Orlando and 9 of Portland should be receiving a yellow card for this reckless challenge – remember he has just earlier also been spoken to by the referee at a stoppage.

AM at 2015-04-12 23:39:49

Orlando sub 7 off 12 on – a good move from Adrian Heath as he avoids a potential yellow card with his running dispute with the 21 of Portland

AM at 2015-04-12 23:38:10

With regards to the referees position there are times when I would like to see him move towards his active AR particularly on the bench side as he is remaining very central and adrift from play

AM at 2015-04-12 23:36:12

9 Portland spoken to by the referee as he attempts to slow things down during this frenetic spell of play

AM at 2015-04-12 23:35:21

There is a lot of physical contact between both sets of players which the referee has failed to spot and award and this is in the main due to his distance from active and reading of players actions which at times has not been easy but this is how as a referee you are judged.

AM at 2015-04-12 23:33:09

7 Orlando then gets his retribution on 21 Portland (following his earlier challenge on him) with a free kick awarded.

Good support from the AR Bench side free kick to Orlando

AM at 2015-04-12 23:30:02

Free kick to Orlando and 21 of Portland should be receiving his 2nd yellow card for his reckless challenge on the Orlando No 7.

AM at 2015-04-12 23:27:04

3 Orlando has a shove off the ball on 9 Portland no free kick is awarded as the referee has moved away his gaze with play.

AM at 2015-04-12 23:25:19

Pull back by 17 Orlando on 6 Portland with the referee playing an advantage from this situation and the ball then just goes over the Orlando crossbar.

Portland sub 22 off 11 on

AM at 2015-04-12 23:21:24

Free kick awarded to Portland – correct and this is what the referee needs to do as the tempo is high at the moment again an advantage is then played to Portland (tight) when a stoppage would have been the best option for the referee

AM at 2015-04-12 23:18:07

Good close view adopted by the referee close to the challenge  and then no free kick awarded when Dewsbury was late with his challenge on an Orlando Player. This is the opportunity for the referee to stop play and assert his authority

AM at 2015-04-12 23:15:15

Portland Sub 26 off 13 on – half time

AM at 2015-04-12 23:14:49

The referee gets the 2nd half underway, interesting to see the referee`s approach in this half to the physical aspect of play in the this game to date.

AM at 2015-04-12 23:08:13

Half time summary – The game has been building up as the tempo has increased with Orlando scoring their goal early on against the home team. I would just like to see the referee slow things down and use his time to stop play and speak to players as he is attempting to threaten his own control by playing ineffective advantages when the game is clearly needing a stoppage. The yellow cards issued have all been correct. Overall good movement seen in very warm conditions.

With regards to ARs – EM on the far side will need to consider his flagging technique for throw ins as we have discussed.

CS on this side has performed well with good eye contact seen.

AM at 2015-04-12 22:59:20

Free kick to Orland awarded by CS followed up by a goal kick. I would just like to see the referee slow things a bit use his time more effectively as frustrations are running high as the referee then brings the half to an end.

Half Time

AM at 2015-04-12 22:57:15

3 mins added time Yellow CardOrlando 5

AM at 2015-04-12 22:56:28

21 is then correctly shown the Yellow Cardfor bringing down Larin 21 of Orland he still had half of the pitch to run so could not be deemed a goal scoring opportunity. Frustrations are running high and the referee will need to get a grip on matters. Tight advantage to Portland, better to award a free kick

AM at 2015-04-12 22:53:43

Offside by CS

AM at 2015-04-12 22:53:17

EM then changes his mind on a throw in award this never looks good as he raises his flag in one direction and then goes in the other direction. Always best to get the flag in the hand that you are going to indicate direction before you raise it

AM at 2015-04-12 22:51:28

A packed crowd at Portland are enjoying this competitive game with the referee having to judge non / free kicks. A free kick to Orlando is then indicated by EM who then demonstrates for a shirt pull by a Portland Player on an Orlando Player

AM at 2015-04-12 22:48:44

A very high challenge by Fochive is penalised by the referee and he then awards a free kick to Portland with the Spray out for the first time

AM at 2015-04-12 22:43:36

Free kick to Portland the Referee KS is being very assertive to any physical contact seen, with strong arm signals. Advantage to Orlando then seen with a positive signal

AM at 2015-04-12 22:41:18

GOAL! Larin 21 – Adrian Heath a player from England with a number of Clubs Manager will be pleased..

AM at 2015-04-12 22:39:25

Throw in awarded to Orlando with a change of hands by EM prior to the award.

No free kick awarded to Portland with 2 then being shown Yellow Cardfor a reckless tackle taking out his own retribution on the Orlando Player.

AM at 2015-04-12 22:36:46

A goal kick is awarded by our referee with Portland appealing a ck. Good movement seen by our far side AR – EM

AM at 2015-04-12 22:33:57

With the playing surface being Astro then this will be an added consideration for our match officials

AM at 2015-04-12 22:30:35

A very quick break by Portland has seen the referee KS having to work very hard to remain in touch with play. This is a key factor that we continually discuss on the FA Premier League here in England with our Referees. Fitness and close proximity is key to accurate decision making.

AM at 2015-04-12 22:27:57

Good movement seen from CS on the near touchline. I am sure that Paul Rejer previously AR Manager on the FA Premier League here in England will have had a positive impact on Lining on the MLS League.

AM at 2015-04-12 22:25:22

Free kick to Orlando taken by their Captain KAKA 10 goes wide

AM at 2015-04-12 22:24:20

Apppeals for handball by Orlando waved away by KS.

AM at 2015-04-12 22:22:32

The Referee will be considering his 10 minute analysis as we complete the first 10 minutes. A number of early free kicks awarded as the Referee sets out his game plan and shows early authority. See also the former top flight referee Hacketts BLOG for an update on 10 minute refereeing.

The Portland Timbers and Orlando City SC meet for the first time ever. The Timbers broke into the win column for the first time last weekend, knocking off previously undefeated FC Dallas 3-1 in the Rose City. Orlando City saw their current winless run stretched to three games with a second consecutive 1-0 loss in stoppage time on their home ground, falling to D.C. United last Friday at the Citrus Bowl.

HEAD-TO-HEAD ALL-TIME: First meeting. · This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. · Coaches record: Caleb Porter vs. ORL: first game … Adrian Heath vs. POR: first game

PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers won for the first time in 2015, roaring to a 3-1 victory against previously undefeated FC Dallas on Saturday evening at Providence Park. The Timbers are in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with 6 points from 5 matches. LAST MATCH · The opening goal came in the 23rd minute. Timbers center back Nat Borchers was left unmarked on the back post on a Jorge Villafana corner kick and he easily headed home. · FC Dallas struck back in the 30th minute from a Michel corner kick that Atiba Harris flicked on to Tesho Akindele at the back post, and he applied an easy finish. · The Timbers took the lead just past the hour mark. Darlington Nagbe made a long run to the edge of the FCD box and played to Dairon Asprilla at the right corner. He then sent a sizzling cross into the area that was redirected into the goal by Maximiliano Urruti at the near post for a 2-1 lead. · The home side put the game away three minutes from the end when Fanendo Adi sent Diego Chara all alone behind the FCD defense following a corner kick clearance, and after a long run he broke in one-on-one with ‘keeper Chris Seitz and calmly slotted inside the far post. · Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made no changes to the team that went down to a 2-1 defeat by Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. · PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-4-2): Adam Kwarasey – Alvas Powell, Nat Borchers, Liam Ridgewell, Jorge Villafana – Darlington Nagbe, Diego Chara, George Fochive (Gaston Fernandez 90), Rodney Wallace (Dairon Asprilla 61) – Maximiliano Urruti (Jack Jewsbury 81), Fanendo Adi. TEAM NEWS · The Timbers put an end to their four-game winless run to start the season with the victory vs. FC Dallas. The

Timbers had opened the campaign with three consecutive draws before the loss to Vancouver. · “We scored three goals in three different ways. This was a tight game. Like I said it was ugly. It was a ping pong match. It’s not the game we wanted to play, it’s the game we knew we had to deal with and I thought we dealt with it well,” Timbers head coach Caleb Porter said. “In the end, we scored a goal on a set piece ourselves, we scored a goal on a great counter attack and we scored a goal where Darlington [Nagbe] went on a run and played [Dairon] Asprilla in and Maxi kind of poached a goal.” · Center back Nat Borchers scored his first goal since moving to Portland from Real Salt Lake in the offseason. He has scored goals now in seven consecutive seasons, and in eight of his 11 MLS seasons for his career. · “It felt good. We’ve been working on set pieces a lot in training. We got scored on a couple of set pieces this year. So to score one on a set piece I thought was good. A great feeling to get the first goal and open things up,” said Borchers. · “We obviously gave up the one set piece, so we didn’t manage that moment well. That’s disappointing. But also Dallas has scored a lot of goals off set pieces so they are tough,” said Porter. “In the end, we got the result. We will continue to work on set pieces every week like we do and hopefully we don’t give up anymore.”
