Newcastle v Arsenal

RH at 2018-04-15 15:24:20

The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • A performance of contrasts from Anthony Taylor
  • Superb Technical display from a Referee who looked calm and controlled throughout
  • However the bar is set too high on issuing cautions where despite witnessing some rash Newcastle challenges and a nailed on case to caution Mustafi for halting Slimani’s attacking progress, it is the Newcastle striker who is cautioned for kicking the ball away

Full Time

Summary points to follow

RH at 2018-04-15 15:19:55

A minimum of three minutes of additional time to be played!

RH at 2018-04-15 15:19:15

Yellow CardWe finally see a caution for Slimani delaying the restart!

RH at 2018-04-15 15:14:41

As we enter the last few minutes of normal time the pressure will mount for the Officials as the weight of expectation of the home crowd increases greatly!

RH at 2018-04-15 15:10:16

Throughout this match Anthony Taylors movement and positioning in this match has been text book and a lesson for any aspiring Referee. He has adjusted well to the pattern of play and tactical developments especially since Slimani has been introduced

RH at 2018-04-15 15:05:29

Slimani’s pace down the left side has caused Mustafi and Arsenal problems, the Gunners defender can consider himself fortunate not have been cautioned earlier

RH at 2018-04-15 15:02:50

Well you can’t accuse the home side of sitting on this lead as we have an open game, where the Referee is coping well with counter attacking!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:59:13

So tactically how will the last twenty minutes plus added time affect the game and the challenge for the Match Officials? This is an important phase of the match as the home team seek forty points?

RH at 2018-04-15 14:56:41

GOAL!Matt Richie fires the home side ahead!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:55:54

This is proving to be a Jekyll and Hyde performance from Anthony Taylor, Technically good but a reluctance to issue cautions when it looks to be the right thing

RH at 2018-04-15 14:52:51

Slimani’s attacking progress is halted by Mustafi, normally enough grounds for a caution, but not today!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:50:34

Lacazette grounding Kenedy as the match tempo rises, I just hope that the Referee isn’t trying to prove obscure point by not cautioning anyone in this game

RH at 2018-04-15 14:48:41

Monreal on the receiving end again this time on the follow through from Richie who in all fairness was already committed, a free kick being all hat was needed

RH at 2018-04-15 14:47:13

That centre circle trip on Arsenals Monreal not being a popular call, but it was correct!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:44:33

Adam Nunn rightly keeps the flag down as Lacazette is obviously offside but with the ball in Dubravka’s hands it was time to mount an attack!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:41:52

Anthony Taylor getting into position well in that recent Newcastle attack to rightly decide that Mustafi did not commit an offence against Perez

RH at 2018-04-15 14:39:28

The Referee has read play well in this match, he moves around comfortably being able to accelerate at will, he gets into good positions and with such a one sided game in possession terms has not got in the way and has reacted well to counter attacks. In technical terms its looking impressive so far!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:35:28

Anthony Taylor with a great spot to see that Iwobi handled the ball as he prepared to strike on goal, well done!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:32:26

The second half has started at St James park

RH at 2018-04-15 14:27:00

A competitive first half which at times would have benefitted with a more higher profile presence from the Referee who has been reluctant to issue a caution despite every reason to have done so in the case of Perez and Lejeune. The visitors 71% possession tells you much about the game where the home side have counter attacked well and praise here to Assistant Referee Adam Nunn who has dealt well with some tight offside calls including the build up to the Newcastle goal. There was an interesting call on a penalty area handball offence by Lacelles but in my view the bar would have been set too low if it had been given as a spot kick. Anthony Taylors postioning and movement look good, but he does need to deal effectively with these late challenges which are starting to effect his control

RH at 2018-04-15 14:09:07

Lejeune on Iowbi late again, this needs dealing with Anthony!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:07:56

Perez again late on Xhaka, this needs clamping down on as these mounting  careless challenge from behind are breaking the game up!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:06:26

Perez goes to ground under pressure from Willcock to win a free kick but it wasn’t as obvious as Perez’s wrestling Lacazette to ground earlier!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:03:37

Lejeune with another spiteful late challenge this time on Aubameyang catching the Gunner on the ankle!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:02:03

Credit to Assistant Adam Nunn for rightly keeping his flag down on a tight offside call as Gayle received the ball from Shelvey in the build up to that goal!

RH at 2018-04-15 14:00:19

GOAL!Perez with a cracking strike levels it for the Toon!

RH at 2018-04-15 13:59:28

Both of these teams have impressive records of scoring from corners this season. So its good to see the Referee on his toes and looking to be mobile as the ball is played in!

RH at 2018-04-15 13:56:36

Gayle rightly penalised for that midfield push Chambers

RH at 2018-04-15 13:55:10

Just getting chance to reflect on that handball, I don’t feel that blocking the shot which may well have gone over the goal was on the defenders mind, would have set the bar low on awarding penalties, I can  go with the Referees reading of that incident

RH at 2018-04-15 13:51:10

Newcastle fortunate not to have conceded a penalty as Lascelles definitely has his arm raised and makes contact with the ball which results in a corner!

RH at 2018-04-15 13:48:32

Kennedy the victim as he is tripped by Chambers, just going back that earlier challenge on Lacazette, his foot was over the ball and his opponent would have definitely felt that!

RH at 2018-04-15 13:46:17

GOAL!But Lacazette recovers to put Arsenal ahead!

RH at 2018-04-15 13:45:39

I don’t think Anthony Taylor had the TV replay view of that Kennedy challenge on Lacazette, but if he had I feel that he would have cautioned him!

RH at 2018-04-15 13:41:01

Already the homes sides 4-4-1-1 formation producing plenty of possession for the visitors where they run against ten men behind the ball, so Anthony Taylor will need to read play well so as not to get in the way of the action!

RH at 2018-04-15 13:36:49

Mustafi gets a nick from Diame and his grounding produces an Arsenal free kick

RH at 2018-04-15 13:33:35

Willcock with a careless trip on Richie produces the first free kick of the game

RH at 2018-04-15 13:31:25

If you are watching the game on TV, Adam Nunn is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Gary Beswick is running the nearside touch line.

Newcastle United v Arsenal

Assistants: G Beswick & A Nunn
Fourth official: Kevin Friend

While most readers will recall the thrilling 4-4 draw in this fixture back in 2011, less will remember the record transfer of Super Mac, aka Malcolm MacDonald, between the sides in the seventies and less still the name of George Eastham, who also undertook the journey from Tyneside to Highbury, only he did it in 1960.

This is game 180 between the sides, the first on Tyneside having ended 6-0 in Division Two in September, 1893, thanks to hat-tricks from both Joe Wallace and Bill Thompson.

The last north-east encounter was in August, 2015, when a Fabricio Coloccini own goal gave Arsenal their win with Andre Marriner in charge. Santi Cazorla joined six of the home side in the book that day, alongside Aleksandr Mitrovic. The current Fulham loanee found himself dismissed after just 16 minutes.

Anthony Taylor, who refereed Arsenal’s latest FA Cup final victory last season over Chelsea, also took the north London derby won 1-0 by Spurs in February, and the Emirates fixtures against Bournemouth (3-0) and Chelsea (2-2), while his sole Newcastle appointment this season was their 0-0 home draw with Brighton, during which he cautioned four, including Yedlin and Merino.

All you need to know about Anthony Taylor:

Matches in 2017/18: 23 (12 on TV)
Fourth official appointments in 2017/18: 7

Yellows: 78 Reds: 0

Today’s Match Referee is Anthony Taylor, his Assistant Referees are Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn. The Fourth Official is Kevin Friend

RH at 2018-04-15 13:11:52

Will this be the game where we witness Newcastle United breach the forty point mark? Arsene Wenger says that his Arsenal team are over the crisis, so will they offer a challenge that will stop their hosts in taking a massive step in securing Premier League football on Tyneside next season? There is still plenty to play for this afternoon at St James Park!
