Full time summary-

Kevin Friend has overall controlled this match and this has been aided in his match control by the showing of 6 yellow cards.

I mentioned at half time that I felt KF missed 2 early opportunities to show the yellow card and if he had stepped up his disciplinary approach earlier in the game then would we have still seen 3 yellow cards in the 3 minutes just prior to half time?. Anita`s challenge early in the game on Kane was a particularly  nasty elbow and was missed by all 3 match officials who were in close proximity.

My feeling is the KF is lacking a real sparkle and also a real dynamic outward impression – this is the view seen and as I have mentioned in my BLOG the performance today by Kevin Friend is such a difference to our leading referees namely Mark Clattenburg and Mike Dean – look and compare their body language, hand arm signals, dynamic movement and reading of play, detection of fouls, showing the yellow cards in a clear and timely manner (reference my blog today) and also the management of players.

AG after 1 offside error in the 1st half which may have been due to sunlight in his vision he has gone on in the 2nd half to make some really good offside judgements including the Spurs 2nd and 3rd goals.

HL has given good support for the yellow card  shown to Lamella 1st half, however for the Newcastle goal there was an offside in the build up which he has missed (again position just out of line with the 2nd rearmost defender)

Full Time

1-3

Full time summary to follow….

AM at 2015-04-19 17:48:43

GOAL! Kane 18 on a break away – great non offside flag from AG. Harry Kane has shown us why he is our top striker!

3 minutes of added time shown

AM at 2015-04-19 17:47:07

42 Bentaleb is then eventually shownYellow CardI wonder why this took so long? maybe KF was checking that he had not yellow carded him earlier in the game? and then shown from such a great distance? this was a clear yellow card and would have been much more effective if shown quickly

Spurs sub 8 off 38 on

AM at 2015-04-19 17:42:15

CK to Spurs followed by no free kick to N. with Krul wanting a free kick when the ball is played out of his hands.

42 Spurs careless on Taylor – further free kick to N. followed by a gk to S.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:39:29

As we enter the final 7 minutes and added time the officials will need to keep fully focussed!

Spurs sub 3 off and 33 on

Spurs offside correct by AG

AM at 2015-04-19 17:35:19

Spurs sub 22 off 19 on – look at Spurs change in pattern of play now and how the referee will need to adjust his positioning to reflect this.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:32:48

Another good offside flag from AG – DID YOU NOTICE HIS POSITION WHICH IS BANG IN LINE WITH THE 2ND REAR MOST N. DEFENDER.

Newcastle sub 8 off 32 on

AM at 2015-04-19 17:30:28

Another good non offside flag by AG. Spurs player not offside as the ball is played forward.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:29:41

AG eventually puts up the OFFSIDE flag as the Spurs players moves in to challenge with the N. gk correct in this situation to flag offside as the Spurs player is clearly active, good decision AG

AM at 2015-04-19 17:27:40

Spurs effort saved by Krul close to the goal line. Ball not over the goal line as confirmed by goal line technology (GDS) – this has been brilliant and is now an accepted part of our game. Video review on certain major decisions should be introduced asap

Advantage to Spurs again I would like to see this signal extended and shown with more authority.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:19:19

5 Vertonghen Spurs Yellow Cardon 17 Newcastle KF has chosen his time on this one and then shows the yellow card. Spray out for the resultant free kick to N.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:16:51

Going back to the Spurs 2nd goal there is a good non flag by AG for offside against Bentaleb as he is onside when the ball was played, although there were other Spurs players offside and not active when the free kick was taken.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:11:59

Good movement seen on this Spurs attack from KF with a good view as Spurs enter the N. pen area.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:10:50

GOAL!Eriksen 1-2.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:10:20

Kane offside by AG his position was some 5 metres back from were the free kick was taken from. Colback commits a further foul on a Spurs player. This would have been an ideal opportunity to speak to Colback and remind him that any further offence will lead to his dismissal.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:06:29

25 Obertan trailing leg has caught Rose as he challenges him for the ball free kick awarded.

AM at 2015-04-19 17:04:56

19 seconds of the 2nd half and GOAL! Colback. Inspired substitution – however there was an offside in the lead up to  the goal which was not flagged by HL

AM at 2015-04-19 17:01:45

Newcastle subs 25 on 30 off 11 off 28 on

2nd half underway..

Half time summary:

For me so far we have seen why KF has had to resort to 3 yellow cards just before half time in the space of 3 minutes.

There were missed earlier opportunities when Anita committed an elbow challenge on Kane which was completely missed by all match officials (including the 4th Official who could have offered support here) also Paulinho has committed a reckless challenge on a Spurs player which should have also seen yellow. In fact he was eventually cautioned and he could easily have been on his way to the dressing room for an early shower.  Let us look at KF`s performance in the 2nd half as we look to him to perform that real consistency, movement and high tempo in his game that we see in Mark Clattenburg and Mike Dean.

For both Assistant`s I have discussed at length offside which is their key area and sadly we have missed 2 wonderful opportunities as attacking players move in on goal only to be incorrectly flagged offside. The outcome the high paying spectators have lost with an incorrect offside flag. Training is a key issue here to look at why these incorrect judgements are happening and to learn, listen and get in line.

HL has given good support to KF in terms of the yellow card shown to Lamella.

Half Time0-1

AM at 2015-04-19 16:47:12

1 minute added time and 3 Yellow Cardcards in the space of 3 minutes as the tempo rises as we close towards half time

AM at 2015-04-19 16:46:23

Free kick to Newcastle following a reckless challenge by Lamella 11 of Spurs. After a discussion between KF and HL we see

Yellow Cardfor Lamella 11 of Spurs

AM at 2015-04-19 16:43:31

Yellow CardPaulinho 8 Spurs KF played advantage and then showed the yellow card good refereeing here.

AM at 2015-04-19 16:42:34

Yellow CardColback 14

AM at 2015-04-19 16:42:09

You may be thinking that I am being critical of out top performing Asssitants? but remember these ARs are performing at the top level and are also paid extremely well for carrying out these duties. Maybe AR coaching is also an area to look at?

AM at 2015-04-19 16:38:35

Dier 15 of Spurs is flagged offside by HL when replays clearly show that Dier is onside when the ball is played to him. Why are Assistants now getting these tight judgements incorrect?  my only question in this situation would be that HL`s position was slightly out of line with the 2nd rearmost defender and this is a key factor for offside judgements. You have to be line!

AM at 2015-04-19 16:35:22

Paulinho 8 commits a reckless challenge on a Newcastle player and a yellow card for Paulinho would have been correct as the challenge was reckless on the Newcastle Player as confirmed by replays.

AM at 2015-04-19 16:33:38

Advantage to Spurs better signal from KF. Throw in to Newcastle which should have to Spurs as it last came off a Newcastle player. Colback spoken to by KF for his earlier challenge when advantage played.

AM at 2015-04-19 16:30:55

GOAL!Chadli 22 as Spurs go in front

AM at 2015-04-19 16:29:12

Free kick to Newcastle good signal from AG who is smiling and also has his hand over his brow as the free kick is taken. Spray out as KF moves close to AG. Would this be a case for AG to be wearing a cap to assist in this area? what are your thoughts especially as AGs judgement has been affected by the first incorrect offside

AM at 2015-04-19 16:25:49

A quick break from Spurs and KF is working hard to keep in touch with play. Vorm close to edge of his penalty area. AG would be positioned on the edge of the penalty area to judge. In his opinion the ball when touched by Vorm is done so still within the Spurs penalty area

AM at 2015-04-19 16:23:03

Colback 14 handball and free kick to Spurs in front of the TAs

AM at 2015-04-19 16:22:07

Free kick to Spurs good support signal from HL accidental hand ball from Coloccini

AM at 2015-04-19 16:21:05

Advantage signal to Spurs shown by KF the signal was not displayed for very long and lacked conviction especially when you compare it to Mike Deans strong and positive retention of the advantage signal following Chelsea`s goal yesterday against Man Utd.

AM at 2015-04-19 16:17:44

KF correct in the restart of play throw in to Spurs – insistent and correct in front of the TAs.

AM at 2015-04-19 16:15:33

Offside from HL against Lamela  is correct when the ball was played forward to him.

AM at 2015-04-19 16:14:13

Flag signal from AG against Perez is incorrect as he was clearly onside when the ball was played. Is the sun / shade a factor in this incorrect judgement?

AM at 2015-04-19 16:12:51

A nasty elbow by Anita 8 on Kane. No free kick is awarded and I am surprised by this? I would also have expected a flag signal for a free kick from HL? as this was clear foul – elbow on Kane with little reaction from Kane being seen. For me this was a reckless challenge and a yellow card would have been correct in this situation. Does it mean little player reaction means no action from the referee?

AM at 2015-04-19 16:08:37

An added concentration factor today is how the sun / shade moves across the field of play

AM at 2015-04-19 16:06:33

A key requirement for any referee is high levels of fitness, good movement, close proximity to play and achieving credible viewing angles for the key match decisions. Let us look closely today at how Kevin Friend performs in these areas.

AM at 2015-04-19 16:03:30

Early ck to Spurs followed by a free kick

AM at 2015-04-19 16:02:28

Andy Garratt (AG) is on the far touchline with Harry Lennard (HL) on the Technical Area touchline.

AM at 2015-04-19 16:00:56

The referee blows his whistle to signal the kick off

AM at 2015-04-19 16:00:10

Kevin Friend is a referee who needs to consistently perform at this level and this is an opportunity for him to really show us his ability at this level. Consistency is key at this and any level.

Well a very warm welcome to this afternoon`s LIVE REF CAM game which is being played at St James Park the home of Newcastle United in Northern England against Tottenham Hotspur who are having a good season lying in 7th position with a win today could take them up to 5th position equal with Liverpool. While Newcastle will be looking to achieve as high a place as possible in mid table.
