So the Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • The big key incident nailed as Shelvey is sent off for a stamping offence on Deli Ali
  • Excellent involvement level based on a safety first approach ensures that Andre Marriner has  a 'good day at the office'
  • Textbook movement and positioning always ensured that the Referee was where he needed to be

My half time comment were backed up with a correct decision to send off Newcastle Captain Shelvey for a 48th minute act of violent conduct on Spurs Deli Ali as he deliberately trod on his opponents ankle during a stoppage in play. The Referee issued also issued two Spurs cautions as his safety first approach allied to excellent positioning and movement ensured a great balance between positioning and proximity to the action particularly in the final third of the field of play.  Both Assistants did well also by maintaining the same standards at the Referee, well done lads and I'll now hand you over to the Refcam team for the Manchester United West Ham game!

Good advantage as Richie is fouled in midfield and the ball is swept wide to Manquillo

77

RH at 2017-08-13 15:07:08

Good final third positioning detects that deflection that results in a Spurs corner

75

RH at 2017-08-13 15:05:25

Those two goals have dampened the tempo but its still important that Andre Marriner and his team focus hard for the last fifteen minutes plus to record a good days work!

74

RH at 2017-08-13 15:04:56

Davis carelessly grounds his opponent but the Referee is well placed again to award a free kick

72

RH at 2017-08-13 15:01:28

Andre Marriner continues to read play well moving into position superbly and sweeping in behind play so as not to get in the way of the ball

Ali still receives attention from the opposition, as he ends up grounded after that challenge

63

RH at 2017-08-13 14:53:19

Its going to be a difficult final half hour for the Newcastle players, lets hope they keep their discipline unlike their Captain

RH at 2017-08-13 14:50:33

GOAL! How ironic that Deli Ali opens the scoring for Spurs

57

RH at 2017-08-13 14:47:40

Elliott fouled by Sissoko as the Newcastle keeper goes to ground, safety first Refereeing again as the challenge wasn't the worst I've seen, but given events since the start of this half the Referee was right to penalise

54

RH at 2017-08-13 14:44:51

A TV replay showing how close Andre Marriner was to that sending off incident and just how irresponsible the actions of the Newcastle player Shelvey were!

53

RH at 2017-08-13 14:43:27

Shouts for handball as Dembele controls the ball, Simon Beck well placed must have felt that it was the players chest that made contact

52

RH at 2017-08-13 14:41:46

Yellow CardAli is the centre of attention as this time Richie commits a reckless challenge before an advantage produces the best chance of the game for Harry Kane!

50

RH at 2017-08-13 14:39:31

Well will that sending off raise the tempo now!

48

RH at 2017-08-13 14:38:43

Red CardShelvey rightly sent off for a senseless stamp on Deli Ali's ankle!

46

RH at 2017-08-13 14:26:37

Not the most exhilarating half of football but Andre Marriner has successfully achieved a good balance of judging his involvement level and adopting a safety first approach at other moments, the caution of Kane being a safety first response as the Spurs man's half way lunge caught ball and player, Ali's 37th minute  challenge on Mbemba was a swift intervention before Spurs could produce what would have been a controversial strike. The Referee's movement and positioning has been of a high standard always getting him into good viewing positions in the final third. Both Assistants have looked sharp underlining that fact that the match officials go into the second half with no baggage

RH at 2017-08-13 14:19:11

3 minutes minimum additional time to be played this half

44

RH at 2017-08-13 14:16:02

Referee and Assistant working well there together as some hard but fair challenges came in before Scott Ledge signalled a Spurs throw, good stuff!

43

RH at 2017-08-13 14:13:59

Scott Ledger doing well there to track the Newcastle player as he pursued the ball to commit an offside offence

40

RH at 2017-08-13 14:11:30

Andre Marriner has read the pattern of play well so far and positioning himself well in the channels during attacking moves

RH at 2017-08-13 14:09:09

RH at 2017-08-13 14:06:09

A good challenge this time from Clark on Peters earns Spurs a corner as Dier concedes a free kick at the restart for a careless challenge

31

RH at 2017-08-13 14:02:39

Yellow CardHarry Kane's reckless lunge takes ball and player to earn the first caution of the day,a good benchmark for the Referee to maintain for the remainder of this game!

28

RH at 2017-08-13 13:59:45

As Spurs attacked Newcastle found space behind wing back Peters and produced a strong catch sprint from the Referee, end to end at the moment!

27

RH at 2017-08-13 13:58:01

Hayden dumps Dembele to the ground and concedes an obvious free kick

26

RH at 2017-08-13 13:57:05

Great mobility and final third positioning from the Referee as Spurs counter attacked at pace there!

25

RH at 2017-08-13 13:55:53

Andre Marriner has kept a low profile so far judging his involvement level very well, I'm sure that he will need to keep his gunpowder dry as the tempo will surely rise at future phases of this game

23

RH at 2017-08-13 13:54:00

Ali and Lascelles clash following a robust but fair challenge from the Newcastle player, have to say that Ali provoked the response!

RH at 2017-08-13 13:51:45

Clark nudges Peters and Simon Beck signals a Spurs free kick, looked fair enough!

19

13

RH at 2017-08-13 13:44:03

The Referee is rightly conserving his energy as Spurs enjoy possession and a slow build up as the match tempo is subdued at the moment

Dummett looks an early casualty with a hamstring injury

5

RH at 2017-08-13 13:36:48

Gayle took a wack on the back of the head from Alderweireld but Andre Marriner saw nothing wrong with it, well he was close enough!

2

RH at 2017-08-13 13:33:34

The Referee plays an advantage as Perez is fouled but Newcastle are unable to take much from it

RH at 2017-08-13 13:32:09

If you are watching the game on TV, Scott Ledger is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Simon Beck is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2017-08-13 13:31:48

Perez concedes the first free kick of the game with a careless challenge!

RH at 2017-08-13 13:21:49

The following is an extract from Jason Pettigroves excellent ‘Runners and Riders’ piece that can be found on the ‘You are the Ref’ website ahead of each weekend’s Premier League action!

Saving the best until last? Very possibly. A packed to the rafters St. James’ Park is always a sight to behold and, invariably, the games against Tottenham there generally provides superb, high-quality entertainment.

This is unlikely to be any different, the Magpies back in the big time after a season away and the north Londoners looking to assert their authority under Maurico Pochettino. You get the feeling it’s now or never for them in terms of title aspirations.

Tottenham have had ‘promise’ for the last couple of seasons but just fallen short. The window of opportunity is getting smaller and with players like Kyle Walker having left, one suspects that if silverware isn’t forthcoming next May, a few more high-profile players may follow him.

Andre Marriner is another official who has all of the tools in his locker but doesn’t always use them correctly. Well liked by players and managers, his ability to communicate is, nevertheless, second to none, and it’s probably that reason alone why he retains their respect.

A cauldron awaits him and the two teams and he shouldn’t have any problem stirring the pot to create the right mix.
