Full time summary

AM at 2016-01-12 23:01:34

Well that was a tremendous game and a great advert for Premier League Football. Players from both sides gave their all and the outcome a 3-3 draw which I thought overall was a fair reflection.

As for our Referee Mike Dean then overall he has controlled the game and players very well. There has been a number of key match decisions to judge. Let us go through each one.

For discussion we have 5 key match decisions to review: 12th minute – penalty kick to MU following handball by Mbemba 18 of Newcastle following Fellaini`s header towards goal – for me his outstretched arm is in an unnatural position and he has made a deliberate action to block the ball goal bound and MD from his position has awarded a penalty kick to MU. 24th minute – Handball by Dummett on the ground completely unaware that the ball had been kicked at his arm by a MU player which in this case was in an a natural position and not a deliberate action. 32nd minute – foul by Lingard 35 on Janmaat 22 of Newcastle – this in my opinion should have resulted in a penalty kick to NU. As mentioned in my BLOG. Why was it not given? then again if we look at the referee`s position which in this situation saw MD blocked by a player and I don’t think that he had the best view or angle. What are your thoughts? This would have a good case for video review.       You Are The Ref Video Aid Campaign Football is moving ever closer to the use of video referees, as proposed and championed by You Are The Ref experts.

61st minute no penalty kick to NU – correct on replay. SB would have supported MD well here as MD was caught on the fast breakaway by NU.

66th minute – penalty kick to NU following grappling by Smalling on Mitrovic during the taking of a NU ck. Very good to see a referee be strong and award the penalty kick. More decisions like this from other Premier Referees following grappling at ck`s would soon seen this practice reduce. Well done Mike here.

I have mentioned the confusion on the yellow card submitted in the 29th minute, 2 MU players close to the challenge on Wijnaldum – TV reported Smalling shown the yellow when in fact it was Herrera. A clear practice of isolation of player would assist MD here and also help to sell the decision.

Mike has overall shown good fitness, acceleration, strong use of the whistle which we have discussed and it is good to make it talk for you, dependant on severity of offence. Mike has remained firm, strong and not afraid to make the big decisions as we have discussed.

Both Assistants have offered MD good support, all offsides were correct, ball out of play judgements correct, they both remained low key but such was Mike Dean`s overall strong match control of this game that this is what exactly was required.

More importantly what do you think?     Please let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref or why not visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/youaretheref

Half time summary

AM at 2016-01-12 21:48:03

That was a pulsating half –

For discussion we have 3 key match decisions to review:

12th minute – penalty kick to MU following handball by Mbemba 18 of Newcastle following Fellaini`s header towards goal – for me his outstretched arm is in an unnatural position and he has made a deliberate action to block the ball goal bound and MD from his position has awarded a penalty kick to MU.

This would have a good case for video review.

You Are The Ref Video Aid Campaign Football is moving ever closer to the use of video referees, as proposed and championed by You Are The Ref experts.

All yellow cards correct, good fitness and movement seen from MD. Both Assistants have offered MD good support, low key but such is MD`s overall match control of this game.

Review of FA Cup action last weekend

AM at 2016-01-12 20:34:23

Week 21 of the Premier League is spread across this midweek, following a break from top-flight action for the FA Cup Third Round.

The officials kept themselves busy during one of the greatest weekends in the footballing calendar, although there were some eyebrows raised – particularly those of former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett – after a trio of poor decisions from the Select Group referees.

Pre Match Build Up

AM at 2016-01-12 20:23:59

Good evening and welcome to our refcam followers for this evening`s Premier League game. A crucial encounter for different reasons. This fixture has provided plenty of entertainment over the years, but both sides find themselves under pressure ahead of this fixture at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle remain in the relegation zone, while Louis Van Gaal’s status as the Red Devils boss has come under question over recent weeks. However, they overcame Swansea last time out and are still within touching distance of their neighbours, Manchester City.

Mike Dean is a good choice for this one with the players on both sides knowing him well. A capacity midweek crowd certainly won’t faze the official from making the big calls.
