In summary, so much to admire about Craig Pawson’s refereeing – his performance and level of match control were of a very good standard. Here’s the key plus points:
- Craig reads the game well, he has the ability to anticipate play and to be ‘on the move’ as plays develop.
- His recognition of penal offences was of a very high standard throughout; I cannot recall one occurrence of an obviously incorrect call.
- What is often forgotten post-match is the contribution of the Assistant Referees. Scott Ledger and Con Hatzidakis both gave commendable displays to back up Craig Pawson and their performances were a major plus.

Honour’s even at St James’ Park – a fair result in my opinion – summary to follow …..
AH at 2017-10-01 18:22:42
The ball strikes Lovren’s arm – no appeal for a penalty – play on is the correct decision
AH at 2017-10-01 18:20:41
3 minutes additional time ……..
AH at 2017-10-01 18:20:03
My first criticism of the day as Con Hatzidakis finds himself 10 metres short of the goal-line and not best placed to make his judgement as to whether the ball had travelled out of play. A degree of sympathy from me as the pace of play occasionally makes this impossible for the ARs.
AH at 2017-10-01 18:15:28
NEWLIV Alberto tumbles, Pawson decides, goal-kick is correct – once again the referee’s positional play is the key here.
AH at 2017-10-01 18:10:24
Yet another good example of penal offence recognition – Craig is doing very well to maintain this very good standard.
AH at 2017-10-01 18:04:23
#NEWLIV 15 minutes to go as substitutions take place, time for the refereeing team to refocus for the final stages of the game.
AH at 2017-10-01 18:01:25
#NEWLIV more top level officiating as Con Hatzidakis correctly indicates Sturridge offside. The key to this, and his correct decision in the build up to the Newcastle goal, was his positioning, which, on both occasions, was ‘text-book’
AH at 2017-10-01 17:54:35
#NEWLIV This is building nicely, continued accurate decision making must be to the fore – the 3rd team have done very well so far
AH at 2017-10-01 17:52:22
Scott Ledger once again does well, matching the referee’s level of involvement, correctly awarding a free-kick as Alberto offends
AH at 2017-10-01 17:51:01
This has been a testing period for the referee as he was faced with a tricky decision, i.e. yellow or red for Gomez. Good to see him taking his time and ushering players away, then communicating with Bobby Madley, before deciding on yellow. Correct in my view, with the replaying showing that Gomez always had his eyes on the ball.
AH at 2017-10-01 17:47:26
Craig Pawson decides it’s time for the first card of the game a Perez kicks the ball away – not sure it was needed, but he took the chance to assert his authority
AH at 2017-10-01 17:44:30
Good positioning once again by Craig Pawson to correctly award a goal-kick to the Away Team. Significantly, no complaints from the Home Team players
AH at 2017-10-01 17:42:00
Scott Ledger confident in his own decision making as he explains to Matt Ritchie that a goal-kick was the correct decision – I am not sure that the locals agreed, but he was right.

#NEWLIV Here we go for the 2nd half, here’s hoping for a continuation of both the entertainment and the high referring standards.

1-1, entertaining, and from our viewpoint, a very solid half by the 3rd team on the field of play. Match control gained and retained and not a caution in sight – here’s hoping for much of the same in the second 45!
AH at 2017-10-01 17:18:18
Just 2 additional minutes to play …….
AH at 2017-10-01 17:17:25
#NEWLIV Good judgement, once again, by Craig Pawson as Joselu, at first appearing to be injured, is quickly to his feet as play continues – a great example of solid decision making by the match officials, which has been a feature of the first half.
AH at 2017-10-01 17:13:36
#NEWLIV The intensity of the game has risen, time I think for the referee to buy himself some time and close the game down, not, of course, to the detriment of the entertainment. It’s key he retains control for the final 4 minutes of the half, keeping a tight reign on proceedings will assist.
AH at 2017-10-01 17:10:49
A great offside call leads to a run on goal for Joselu, and somewhat fortunately, the striker finds the equaliser. Game on!
AH at 2017-10-01 17:05:18
Goals often lead to an increased temperature in the game, time for the refereeing team to refocus for the final phases of the first half
AH at 2017-10-01 17:01:32
Whoosh – out of nowhere Coutinho produces a moment of pure class to fire the Away side into the lead
AH at 2017-10-01 16:58:57
#NEWLIV – much debate here at You Are The Ref HQ with regard to Craig Pawson’s patrol path. He is no Anthony Taylor when it comes to pitch coverage, but he always seems to be well placed, Martin Atkinson esque if you will.
AH at 2017-10-01 16:55:45
#NEWLIV I don’t have a clue how Liverpool did not score then, GLT not needed as a the ball comes off the post and bounces nowhere near the goal-line.
AH at 2017-10-01 16:53:26
The referee plays a good advantage as Henderson offends, allowing Newcastle to build a promising attack
AH at 2017-10-01 16:52:17
20 minutes gone and the atmosphere of the game continues to build – neither side deserves to be in front, but I can’t see this finishing 0-0 (famous last words)
AH at 2017-10-01 16:49:43
#NEWLIV There is a half-hearted appeal for a penalty from Sturridge as ball strikes hand in the penalty area – never a penalty in a million years!
AH at 2017-10-01 16:46:56
#NEWLIV it’s no more than a missed timed challenge as Perez is a touch over exuberant – free-kick only is the correct call from Craig Pawson, same as 1 minute later on Gomez offends.
AH at 2017-10-01 16:41:50
My initial thoughts on the game as this will be more of a technical, decision making test for the match officials, as opposed to a physically demanding contest, full of challenges – we will see as the game unfolds.
AH at 2017-10-01 16:36:52
#NEWLIV Both teams have showed attacking intent in the first 5 minutes, long may this continue, thus allowing the match officials to settle in to the game
AH at 2017-10-01 16:34:28
#NEWLIV Perfect weather conditions and a billiard table of a pitch, we’re all set up for a Sunday afternoon cracker !
AH at 2017-10-01 16:32:22
The game gets under way under that very special North East atmosphere at St. James’ Park
AH at 2017-10-01 16:31:12
The minute’s applause for Freddy Shepherd well respected and observed around the ground – correctly so
AH at 2017-10-01 16:27:56
#NEWLIV Craig Pawson is the man in charge, Scott Ledger and Con Hatzidakis are his wing-men, Bobby Madley looks after the technical area. It’s been a busy week for Craig, having returned from European duty on Friday, such are the demands on our topic officials.
AH at 2017-10-01 16:22:57
This particular fixture has fond memories for me, I was fortunate enough to officiate this game on 3rd April 1996, where the Home Team ran out 4-3 winners in what many consider to be the best ever game in in the Premier League – it was a privilege to be involved, I remember not sleeping for about 3 weeks afterwards I was so excited !
