Post Match Summary

AM at 2015-12-06 19:18:58

In my pre match build up I discussed with you about recent Assistants key match changing decisions this was also the subject of discussion on the Ref Show

The Ref Show 30.11.2015 – Alan Biggs with David Hirst and Glenn Turner

The panel discuss another good weekend for Premier League referees, but question the current contribution of their assistants.

Key Match Decision = 78th minute and the only one of this game saw a perfectly good Liverpool goal scored but this was sadly ruled out by another incorrect key match offside decision by this time Scott Ledger. We discussed why this may have happened and the main reason for this and was as I mentioned with you at half time, Scott`s Positioning for Offside. You have to be in line with 2nd rearmost defender at all times to make your accurate and correct judgements regarding offside. Replays have shown Scott`s position which was approximately 2-3 metres forward of the 2nd rear most defender and well out of line. Coaching of Assistants is a key area required at this level.

I am sure that this will be discussed further on The Ref Show tomorrow.

As for Andre Marriner`s refereeing performance then he has been let down by Scott on the offside flag, but, otherwise he has looked calm and composed for this game. He has managed this event by his reading of non / fouls and he has let the game flow as much as possible and used his yellow cards effectively – 3 for the home and 1 for away as he used the yellow cards to aid his management of this game. His steady movement around the field of play and the teamwork for ball out of play situations was very good.

As for Darren Cann then on the far touchline and in camera view he has displayed all the qualities of an Assistant Referee at the very top at this high level. From an Educational point of view you can only sit back and admire his Assistant Refereeing performance and continue to watch and learn.

Final Whistle

AM at 2015-12-06 18:54:45

As Andre Marriner brings the game to an end. Newcastle provide a shock result and win 2-0 but a big moment in the game went against Liverpool and will no doubt again be discussed in the after math of this game

90+5

90+4

AM at 2015-12-06 18:52:21

Key Match Decison - Liverpool Offside 78th minute

AM at 2015-12-06 18:43:27

Again, we talk about key match changing decisions by Assistants and this has again happened in this game. Scott Leger`s position forward of the 2nd rearmost defender flaws his judgement and at this level in the game is just not acceptable.

DC right to insist on correct position following a Newcastle offside

80

AM at 2015-12-06 18:39:29

If we go back to the incorrect offside decision (KMD) from Scott Ledger then if you look at his position he is again out of line with the 2nd rearmost defender and a point I made at half time. Video review could have sorted this one

78

AM at 2015-12-06 18:37:29

Liverpool offside Moreno by SL incorrect and the goal should have stood!! Key Match Decision – Liverpool will feel unjust

57

AM at 2015-12-06 18:17:00

Allen careless and fk awarded good management in this situation. Ne need for a yellow although commentators have compared this challenge to Lucas in the first half (his challenge was a deliberate shirt pull back in a more advanced and attacking position)

56

AM at 2015-12-06 18:14:08

Foul throw in by Moreno – I think we have seen more foul throw ins this season than for sometime

53

AM at 2015-12-06 18:12:35

Newcastle claim a fk but not awarded – just wondering if the previous Coloccini tackle was going through Andre`s mind. Maybe Scott Ledger could have helped him here and given AM advice on the comms

52

AM at 2015-12-06 18:10:38

AM plays an advantage to Liverpool following a reckless challenge by Coloccini who really at the next stoppage should have received a yellow card.

50

AM at 2015-12-06 18:08:32

Another Newcastle move sees DC on the goal line to award a gk again good positioning achieved here by DC

Half Time Summary

AM at 2015-12-06 17:57:19

Entertaining game both teams looking to play passing football. There has been some quick breakaways in play. In particular the Newcastle opportunity near the end of the first half as Newcastle have upped their game and clearly finish the half the better team.

Andre Marriner has controlled the game well by his consistent use of the yellow cards, steady movement around the field of play and his calmness has aided this game. His visual expressions have achieved his man management of players and he has clearly been careful as to what he has said on the comms!

As for Darren Cann then he has displayed a near perfect Assistant Referee performance to date – keep an eye on him you can only learn from this performance! He was quick to spot a planned trick by Liverpool on a CK – 27th minute.

Scott Ledger has been supportive and we have just mentioned about his positioning on an offside situation.

42

AM at 2015-12-06 17:43:56

Ck to Newcastle correct and good judgement from SL

40

AM at 2015-12-06 17:43:17

From the last Newcastle attack then SL was slightly out of line with the 2nd rearmost Liverpool defender. Although the decision of non offside was correct. It is crucial from a positional point of view to remain in line with 2nd last defender.

FK to Liverpool as play is brought back. From the fk –  Newcastle claim a fk but nothing happening here from the Officials. I think SL would have had the best view but chose not to signal

32

AM at 2015-12-06 17:35:02

Yellow Card

Colback No. 4  reckless – correct and maybe arrived at a good time for AM as the tempo rises somewhat

31

AM at 2015-12-06 17:33:53

AM awards a fk to Liverpool good spot from our referee. Who then shows a stern visual expression and closed mouth towards player conversation

28

AM at 2015-12-06 17:30:37

De Jong handles the ball – fk to Liverpool

27

AM at 2015-12-06 17:29:07

Good alertness, focus and concentration by DC who advises that the Liverpool CK was not taken as per law. Good communication on the comms system and also to the players close by.

Andre`s Positioning and Movement

AM at 2015-12-06 17:27:19

So far fairly central and movement up and down the field of play in a steady fashion. Although he not missed anything I would like to see him wider down the left channel as play moves forward. This will help him to obtain a better view / angle as play enters the penalty areas.

22

AM at 2015-12-06 17:24:11

Non offside flag from DC his slight movement of the flag away from him denotes this as he moves along the touchline

20

AM at 2015-12-06 17:22:41

Liverpool ck – AM is looking rather static, but has now moved to obtain a better view of players in the penalty area, prior to the taking of the ck

19

AM at 2015-12-06 17:20:45

Newcastle do now get a free kick much to the cheers of The Toon

18

AM at 2015-12-06 17:20:11

No Newcastle free kick? I thought that was as Newcastle broke away through the middle of play.

16

AM at 2015-12-06 17:18:26

Early view to date is that AM is looking to manage this game through his management and detection of the non fouls. His experience, fitness levels and movement throughout will be a key area for us to look at.

12

AM at 2015-12-06 17:14:22

From the last Newcastle goal kick AM has achieved a good dropping ball viewing position and decided no free kick

11

AM at 2015-12-06 17:12:37

Newcastle throw in good position taken up by AM to ensure correct placement for restart

9

AM at 2015-12-06 17:09:56

Andre is showing an early calmness and composure as the game moves end to end

Darren Cann

AM at 2015-12-06 17:08:48

With Darren on view on the far touchline – just keep an eye on his flag work and movement along the touchline today. From an Education point of view great learning and this will add polish to your AR performance

4

AM at 2015-12-06 17:05:23

Good early flag technique from Darren Cann – also good movement along the touchline in that last Liverpool breakaway

2

AM at 2015-12-06 17:03:13

AR Scott Ledger is on the Technical Area touchline and Darren Cann on the far touchline

THE REF SHOW

AM at 2015-12-06 16:48:25

The panel discuss another good weekend for Premier League referees, but question the current contribution of their assistants.

For example 2 key match decisions as highlighted below by our ref cam experts and relate to the above topic as discussed on The Ref Show.

The Ref Show 30.11.2015 – Alan Biggs with David Hirst and Glenn Turner

Chelsea v Bournemouth last night – Mark Halsey on Ref Cam

“What a result for Bournemouth this will put more pressure on the Chelsea manager. I believe the goal should of been disallowed on 2 counts, firstly I believe the restart from the corner was incorrect as the ball was not in the D so that is a incorrect restart in play and I believe the dead assistant Richard West who was on that side should of informed the referee that the ball was not in the D. No fault of the referees. Secondly I believe the goal should of been given offside as there was not a second last opponent as the goalkeeper was out leaving a Chelsea defender nearest his own goal line. So looking back at the officials performance you feel sympathy for Mike as he has been let down by his 2 assistants. Firstly with Richard West not spotting the ball outside the D and secondly Andy Garratt with the possible offside, With Andy it was a difficult call because of the game being so quick.

Looking back at Mike’s performance as I said before Jose will have complaints over the goal but in my opinion Mike is not to blame, he managed the game, he managed the players and he cannot have any complaints with his cautions”.

Spurs  v West Ham Utd – 22.11.2015 – Rob Harris on Ref Cam

“Andy Garratt got lucky, how different would matters have been had Kouyate’s first half effort gone in and not hit the bar when he was clearly offside? to be fair to Andy he’s had a great track record at this level for a long time and he did well”

Previous Results

AM at 2015-12-06 16:40:15

Could McClaren be facing the Klopp end again today?

Wolfsburg sacked Steve McClaren 9 days after a 3-0 home defeat by Jurgen Klopp`s Dortmund in 2011.

Previous results in the past few years. Liverpool won 0-6 at Newcastle in 2013. A draw was the following season`s result. Last time Newcastle won 1-0.

There has not been a 0-0 between these 2 teams in the last 42 games! will there be a 0-0 today?

Pre Match Build Up

AM at 2015-12-06 16:38:32

Good afternoon to our ref cam viewers for this crucial game between Newcastle v Liverpool. Liverpool must be favorites but I feel that this one could go either way. Newcastle I am sure will be coming out full of confidence as they give their all to The Toon Army. This one could get rather feisty, so stay with us whilst we hopefully enjoy a display of quality refereeing. So why not let us know who you think will be the winners by contacting us either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at info@you-are-the-ref.com
