FINAL SCORE: 2 - 1

Well no body saw that result coming and often when that is the case the Referee and his team become the scapegoat, well not today, a solid first half display was followed up with a second half performance which included an excellent midfield advantage that led to the winning goal. Also the games other major decision the sending off of Steven Taylor was fully justified given his earlier caution, he could have cost his team the game with that second reckless challenge!. The other cautions in the game for reckless challenges and dissent were correct given the rise in match tempo and what was at stake. The performance was solid throughout and as the game rose in tempo the Referee raised his game also well done! The two Assistants looked solid and Fourth Official Bobby Madley was also active in establishing a good dialogue with both managers. So its really great to report on a great Performance from Martin Atkinson and his team, i’ll bet he’ll be drinking on the strength of that winning goal advantage tonight!

Martin Atkinson and his team looking in control as we close in on the final whistle!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:38:46

Into the last minute of this pulsating second half!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:37:32

The noise in the stadium must deafening!!!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:36:12

Total focus needed by Martin Atkinson as we see out this last five minutes of play!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:34:33

A superb offside flag from Peter Kirkup to signal Schurrle offside!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:33:42

Six minutes added time!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:33:22

Comments rightly coming in from our twiter feed praising Martin Atkinson for a superb advantage for the second Newcastle goal!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:31:13

A good offside flag there by Peter Kirkup as Drogba is caught offside

RH at 2014-12-06 15:30:14

Martin Atkinson has definitely raised his profile in the this period as we thought he would have to!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:29:12

Steven Taylor, being Red Cardfor a reckless midfielsd challenge with Yellow Cardfor Fabregas and Costa  for dissent

RH at 2014-12-06 15:27:44

So with Newcastle down to ten men and Chelsea mounting pressure this looks like an action packed finish!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:26:50

Apologies as we lost  our connection there GOAL!for Fabregas

RH at 2014-12-06 15:25:38

RH at 2014-12-06 15:15:11

Its my guess that Peter Kirkup running the Chelsea attack will be the busier Assistant in the final 20 minutes!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:13:13

With Chelsea seeming to 4-4-2 now, will this stretch the game and dictate , less midfield and more attacking through the channels? if so the Referee will need to change his patrol path with play taking him more into the final third

RH at 2014-12-06 15:10:44

A series of substitutions have been made during this second period so far, but at present they’ve not affected the pattern of play in the sense that the Referee needs to be aware, the ‘game changer’ for the Match Officials has definitely been the goal!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:07:32

Yellow CardThird yellow card of the game as Schurle recklessly charges an opponent

RH at 2014-12-06 15:05:48

Chelsea are now responding, as the game starts to flow from end to end, a more demanding period this from a physical point of view for the Referee

RH at 2014-12-06 15:04:11

With Newcastle in the ascendancy the next ten minutes will be key from a match control perspective

RH at 2014-12-06 15:03:29

Regarding my comments of being close to play, the Referee just needs to be careful not to get in the way, as he did twice on that last Newcastle attack

RH at 2014-12-06 15:01:55

So what effect will that goal have from a match control point of view? I feel that the Referee will need to raise his profile!

RH at 2014-12-06 15:00:42

GOAL!Cisse 1-0 Newcastle!

RH at 2014-12-06 14:59:39

Yellow CardSecond yellow card of the game as Taylor hauls down Willian, he can have no complaint

RH at 2014-12-06 14:58:38

Again as with the first half, neither team are attacking at pace, rather they are building though midfield, this will mean that Referee can adopt the same game plan as the first half in remaining close to play

RH at 2014-12-06 14:55:30

It appears that Jose Mourinho is unhappy at the amount of time that Newcastle are taking at re-starts, could be something for Martin Atkinson to stay on top of

RH at 2014-12-06 14:53:20

Chelsea applying early pressure on the Newcastle goal, obviously to test the replacement goalkeeper Alnwick, as Elliot retired injured at half time

RH at 2014-12-06 14:51:27

Yellow CardFirst caution rightly issued to Sissoko for a late challenge

RH at 2014-12-06 14:50:06

With a good first half under his belt, the Referee has his credibility firmly established in this with no ‘baggage’ being carried over from the first period

RH at 2014-12-06 14:48:15

The Referee gets the second half started!

RH at 2014-12-06 14:37:58

As i indicated earlier a solid first half from the Match Officials, the players have helped as the game has been competitive but never over the top. Martin Atkinson has read play well and played four really good advantages, he needs to be careful as Chelsea make have been better rewarded just before half time as Cabella’ strip would have been better penalised with a direct free kick on the edge of the penalty. Talking of Cabella his late trip early in the game was the nearest we’ve come to a caution, but i’ll go with the Referee on that call as we at You-are-the-Ref have been asking for less cautions, and we can’t have it both ways! Both Assistants look solid too, so all in all, a good first half for Martin Atkinson and his team

RH at 2014-12-06 14:32:34

Half Time

RH at 2014-12-06 14:31:55

One minute added time

RH at 2014-12-06 14:31:38

A careless challenge from Cabella near the penalty area led to an advantage from the Referee, not sure though if Chelsea would have preferred a direct free kick?

RH at 2014-12-06 14:28:37

Steady as we go now for Martin Atkinson and his team, just minutes away from a solid first half!

RH at 2014-12-06 14:26:38

The home crowd are sensing that their team are really in this match! for those of us who have experienced games at St James Park, that means lots of noise and Lots of concentration needed!

RH at 2014-12-06 14:23:24

Newcastle are coming more into this game, therefore the balance of play is event and in the ab sense of break away attacks the Referee is able to maintain a close proximity to play, which shows in the quality of the decision making

RH at 2014-12-06 14:21:04

Mikel catching Sissoko on the latest Newcastle attack, it would have been a cheap caution

RH at 2014-12-06 14:19:25

Good positioning by the Referee moving into the left hand channel in the penalty area to correctly judge that the last Newcastle attack came from Colbeck

RH at 2014-12-06 14:16:30

Four good midfield advantages played by Martin Atkinson in the opening half hour, a no risk to match control, good Refereeing!

RH at 2014-12-06 14:14:47

Another good midfield advantage played, this time in favour of Newcastle as Willian offends

RH at 2014-12-06 14:13:20

Costa appealing for a corner following a deflection, TV pictures proving inconclusive

RH at 2014-12-06 14:11:05

Assistant Bennett spot on as Hazard is flagged offside

RH at 2014-12-06 14:10:39

Solid start by the Match Officials as we reach the mid point of the first half, just that late trip by Cabella to take into account

RH at 2014-12-06 14:09:09

The Referee bringing the wroth of the home crowd following a touch line trip by Ameobi, but importantly the decision was correct!

RH at 2014-12-06 14:07:02

At the moment the mid-field area is being fairly but keenly contested, will that remain the same if one team takes the lead, something for the Referee to consider

RH at 2014-12-06 14:03:57

Another good mid field advantage played as Hazard falls victim to a careless challenge!

RH at 2014-12-06 14:03:02

The opening 15 minutes of this game has been at times like a chess match, but Chelsea in particular possess the ability to break at speed, looks like Martin Atkinson must be prepared to deploy explosive sprints to gain that all important view in the final third of the field of play

RH at 2014-12-06 14:00:22

The Referee looked comfortable as Chelsea counter attacked at speed as the game shifts up a gear!

RH at 2014-12-06 13:57:42

That should have been NOT being stretched! sorry

RH at 2014-12-06 13:57:13

Defensive considerations are dominating at the moment which means that Martin Atkinson is being stretched at the moment from a physical perspective

RH at 2014-12-06 13:54:56

A nasty challenge by Cabella may have earned him a yellow card at a more charged phase of the game, but Martin Atkinson allowing play to continue with Chelsea in possession

RH at 2014-12-06 13:51:57

It may not normally be the colour of choice off the field, but wearing yellow jersey’s certainly make it easy to pick out your colleagues!

RH at 2014-12-06 13:49:24

A robust challenge by Mikel brings a positive response by Assistant Kirkup

RH at 2014-12-06 13:48:15

Good advantage played early in midfield as Costa mounts an attack

RH at 2014-12-06 13:46:26

Our match Referee Martin Atkinson gets us underway!
