Match Summary

AM at 2015-12-19 20:37:42

Full time summary –

In what was an entertaining 1-1 draw with both teams giving their all and showing a responsible attitude in a game with heavy rain fall on what was a difficult rain sodden playing surface. Martin Atkinson completed the game and he must be relived that the game was the winner and he must have considered a number of times the key factor of player safety which as a referee in conditions like today is a paramount factor that you have to consider.

Martin Atkinson showed a real understanding and in his first referee appointment since the news of his appointment to the EURO 2016 Tournament then he could not have considered such a challenge in terms of completing this game due to the appalling weather conditions and considering player safety. There were no key match decisions to comment about. Overall fitness, stamina and acceleration were key factors of our referees performance today. He has also correctly showed yellow cards for some technical offences and in my BLOG the only area that I raised for Martin to consider was the non showing on 2 separate occasions of yellow cards for reckless challenges. Maybe he felt the conditions played a factor and that would be his reason that he chose not to show these cards?

Both Assistants supported the referee in a very understanding and empathetic manner. All offside decisions were correct and they were well tuned into the referees pre match instructions and not wanting to get over involved such was Martin`s match control and overall man management of this exciting 1-1 drawn game.

90+3 MINUTES AND MA BLOWS THE WHISTLE FOR FULL TIME

AM at 2015-12-19 20:21:53

Full Time

1-1

90+2

AM at 2015-12-19 20:19:47

Villa throw in MA well placed to judge the deflection off the N. player

90

AM at 2015-12-19 20:18:41

Perez puts the ball just over in that last N. attack with MA well positioned to judge any potential key match decision. 3 added minutes minimum.

88

AM at 2015-12-19 20:16:14

Good acceleration and sprint seen from MA in that last N. breakaway

86

AM at 2015-12-19 20:15:20

MA has shown a calm and responsible management as we enter the final minutes of this game, good movement seen in what can only be described as sapping playing conditions for a referee

83

AM at 2015-12-19 20:13:14

Yellow CardAnother silly booking as Westwood 15 of Villa attempts to come back on the field of play without the referees permission again correct yellow card but how Villa need to sort out these yellow cards.

81

AM at 2015-12-19 20:10:32

Sanchez of Villa reckless and MA shows he attempted to play advantage and then bring back play – no yellow card seen in this incident?

78

AM at 2015-12-19 20:07:42

Yellow Card

What a silly booking to pick up for Ayew who gets carried away about a throw in award. MA spot to show the yellow to Ayew that will dampen him and leave him on edge for the remainder of the game

76

AM at 2015-12-19 20:05:08

Yellow Card

7 Bacuna of AV goes into MA`s book – correct reckless challenge

74

AM at 2015-12-19 20:03:55

As the rain continues to fall heavily with the score finely balanced both teams will be looking for a winner which is good and to be fair to both teams they are giving their all – that looked a reckless tackle from 20 of N. to break a promising AV attack and again MA decides no yellow which I thought surprising?

71

AM at 2015-12-19 20:00:08

That looked a foul on Colback not given and Gestede is then late on Elliott and MA correct to award to N.

70

AM at 2015-12-19 19:58:17

8 off 20 on for Newcastle last sub

67

AM at 2015-12-19 19:57:47

Playing conditions like we have today are always an added concentration factor for a referee because if you start a game then you are always looking wherever possible to complete it. Player safety is paramount of course. A point I am sure that will be discussed by YATR and is an education point for all referees at every level.

65

AM at 2015-12-19 19:53:30

Gestede 39 has certainly added attacking options for Villa in a tactical substitution – MA is allowing play to flow and intervening when necessary

63

AM at 2015-12-19 19:51:49

Villa certainly in the ascendancy as Gestede 39 challenges Elliott in that last Villa attack

62

AM at 2015-12-19 19:50:18

Remi Garde AV Manager shows some emotion in that equaliser which is good to see

60

AM at 2015-12-19 19:48:56

GOAL!

1-1 from no where and it is scored by Ayew

58

AM at 2015-12-19 19:47:37

De Jong 10 off for N. and on comes Perez 17

AV 9 off 39 on

Changes will bring added attacking options for both teams

57

AM at 2015-12-19 19:45:20

De Jong will be disappointed to miss that one as the rain continues to fall

55

AM at 2015-12-19 19:44:07

FK to N. another factor for both Assistants will be their patrol path along the touchline. They will no doubt have to reconsider and ajust accordingly

52

AM at 2015-12-19 19:40:14

FK to Villa – close to the touchline –  MA ensures correct restart ball position

50

AM at 2015-12-19 19:38:55

In that last free kick award to AV – I felt that the playing surface had a real effect on Anita`s challenge as the ball would just not move in the lying surface water

48

AM at 2015-12-19 19:36:23

Good goal line position taken up by SC in that last N. attack – he was right there to judge ball / in/out of play

2nd half underway

AM at 2015-12-19 19:34:35

If the playing surface stays as it is, it will be difficult for the players, if the ball stops flowing freely. What will MA be thinking of player safety?

AM at 2015-12-19 19:31:42

Full time assistants and championship elite list confirmed

Keith Hackett, of YATR, welcomed the second tier. He said: “It will act as a feeder for the best referees to the Premier League.

“Hopefully it will also improve standards in the Championship which currently leave something to be desired.”

Half time summary

AM at 2015-12-19 19:25:05

In very difficult wet playing conditions Martin Atkinson has so far looked calm and assured, he has played some good advantages and allowed play to flow at every opportunity. No key match decisions in the first half and there was just the one yellow card were I mentioned that I thought Bacuna 7 of AV was fortunate escape? I wonder what MMs view was on the line? he seemed well placed to assist MA here and is one for discussion. Otherwise both Assistants have supported MA well . Martin Atkinson biggest concern for half time will be the very wet playing surface which is causing real concern and with Newcastle desperate to complete and win this game.

Half time

AM at 2015-12-19 19:16:57

Half Time

1-0

45

AM at 2015-12-19 19:16:25

Careless tackle by MBEMBA – spray out and good management of this free kick seen from MA – I minute of additional time – minimum

As half time approaches

AM at 2015-12-19 19:14:41

Newcastle ground staff will be very busy at half time and they will be desperate to clear some of the surface water. MA will be pleased so that he can assess matters

40

AM at 2015-12-19 19:12:33

Yellow Card

3 of N. reckless challenge

Playing conditions not looking too good?

AM at 2015-12-19 19:12:03

Water is lying everywhere and is making conditions to play football very difficult! added concern for MA

37

AM at 2015-12-19 19:09:54

GOAL!

Coloccini scores a crucial goal for N. to make it 1-0

Playing Conditions

AM at 2015-12-19 19:08:47

Again I mentioned the playing conditions but they are quite clearly having an effect – Bacuna 7 pulls back 7 of N. no yellow card seen here in what was a promising attack for N. I think 7 of AV is fortunate to escape with no yellow.

34

AM at 2015-12-19 19:05:44

Again a good non offside flag from MM as N. break in an attack

Advantage to N.

AM at 2015-12-19 19:03:53

Again allowed to be played and this is adding value to this game

30

AM at 2015-12-19 19:03:05

Cisse 9 of N. goes down injured – due to playing conditions –

N. SUB – 9 off and Mitrovic 45 on

27

AM at 2015-12-19 18:59:36

In that last N. attack MA has raised his flag correctly but play allowed to continue as Guzan catches the ball – MA correct to raise his flag for offside and MA correct to allow play to continue

25

AM at 2015-12-19 18:57:13

Good advantage to AV with good movement seen from MA on a rain sodden playing surface

23

AM at 2015-12-19 18:55:25

Throw in to AV – contested – but to be fair to MM he was right there to judge

19

AM at 2015-12-19 18:51:16

Early rebuke for Sanchez following a careless tackle a word or two is just what was needed – good early management from MA

17

AM at 2015-12-19 18:48:41

Free kick to N. given by both SC and MA – Teamwork in harmony here

17

AM at 2015-12-19 18:47:43

Good focus and position taken up by MA to award a free kick to AV.

15

AM at 2015-12-19 18:46:23

Good early reading of the game and match control seen from MA he is looking calm and relaxed in the opening 15 minutes

12

AM at 2015-12-19 18:45:22

Good advantage to N. allowed to be played by MA followed by a free kick to N. and a further free kick just outside of the AV penalty area – with the spray out for the 1st time

9

AM at 2015-12-19 18:41:30

Tactically both teams are playing in a similar way 4-2-3-1 with a lone front striker

7

AM at 2015-12-19 18:39:03

Little bit of uncertainty from MA on that last throw in which eventually goes to AV

EURO 2016

AM at 2015-12-19 18:24:35

Martin Atkinson and Mark Clattenburg selected for Euro 2016

Premier League referees Mark Clattenburg and Martin Atkinson have both been selected by UEFA to officiate at this summer’s European Championships in France.

You Are The Ref’s team of experts have been debating for months about which referee should be selected for the tournament, hoping that UEFA would decide to take both – and that has proved to be the case.
